Going to the Dog Prom

Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

As promised, I’m going to tell you about where I wore my pretty, fluffy skirt. I wore it to the New Leash on Life 2016 Dog Prom!

See, it all started with a giveaway on Stile Foto Cibo. Dannie was highlighting Autumn, a pup up for adoption through New Leash on Life and doing a giveaway for an adorable shirt from IHeartDogs, com. Well, I entered the giveaway and told Dannie how much I loved her post the next time I saw her at an event.

And then it turned out I won the giveaway! Plus, a few days later Dannie contacted me to invite me to  the NLOL Dog Prom Fundraiser. So, here we are!

Dannie’s skirt is from T&J Designs and mine is from Rent the Runway. Both our shirts are from IHeartDogs.com

I technically went to Dog Prom stag since Chewie doesn’t do well with people when he’s on his leash. But, I made sure to have a picture of him on hand, complete with prom appropriate bow tie.Screen Shot 2016-05-15 at 8.39.04 AM

Thankfully there were plenty of other pups on which to love.

I had a great time meeting so many fun pups, seeing their fun outfits, voting for Prom Queen and King, and drinking a beer from Empirical Brewery.

On the way home I decided to stop and take an outfit photo along the lake. And where better to stop than at the dog beach?

So, thank you, Dannie, for introducing me to New Leash on Life, some great pups, and for giving me a reason to rent this awesome skirt.

SIA: Girl Reading

Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

Last Monday we unveiled this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge: Young Girl Reading. I fully admit that I procrastinated a bit on this outfit. Even though the painting has a special spot in my heart, it just wasn’t calling out to me to create an outfit.

But then the skirt I was renting for a different event arrived in the mail and I knew that I wanted to incorporate it into my outfit. Even if, in the interest of full disclosure, I didn’t wear this outfit anywhere other than for photos. I promise, though, the skirt got worn in public (which you’ll see later this week) and the top and cardigan will be worn this week with a pair of white jeans.

And, in case you need a refresher, here’s the painting we were interpreting.

What to wear with a tulle skirt

And, yes, I used a book as a prop. I chose one of my favorites, Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris.

Also, since I don’t own anything yellow, when I ran past this little spot on the UIC campus I knew I wanted to take my pictures here. That rock takes care of my yellow needs!

These photos were taken kind of last minute since my weekend was jam packed! The weather was cruddy on Saturday so I just did the basics…except for going to dinner with a blog reader who is moving to Chicago next month! She and her husband were in town to find a place to live and after their successful day of finding a great apartment and signing a lease we met up for dinner at MAD Social.

Sunday I spent most of my day at a fundraiser for New Leash on Life…which is where I wore this skirt originally (but with a different shirt and shoes). I took these photos on the way home after changing in the car. Ah, the life of a style blogger.

White for Fall

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

I saw a lot of posts at the end of last week about how it was people’s last chance to wear white before Labor Day. And, as usual, a lot of questions about whether or not those of us reading continue to wear white afterward.

Well, I totally keep wearing white after Labor Day. Here’s proof:

I actually saw a girl in my office building wearing a very similar outfit last week but she had on a flared skirt, not a pencil skirt. Both versions are cute, it just depends on which style you prefer to wear.

I liked the mix of brown and black and, of course, mixing leopard print with stripes. And, of course, it reminds me of an outfit I wore almost two years ago now that also included brown, black, leopard and white.  So, clearly my tastes haven’t changed that much.

Also, in case you’re curious, I rode a Divvy bike home from work on the day I wore this. But, I changed into workout capris and flats. I still haven’t figured out if it’s possible to ride a bike in a pencil skirt. Have any of you tried it?

Ruffles as Art

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer · Style Imitating Art

First, don’t forget to vote for your favorite outfit of May! Will there be an upset like there was for April??

For this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge, Salazar gave us something really unique: pick a paper sculpture by Peter Gentenaar. The instant I saw his sculptures I immediately knew I wanted to wear this cardigan.

I mean, look at this piece. Click on the image for more information:

Swirls and ruffles and colors. They are so beautiful! My outfit doesn’t do them justice but I’m working with what I’ve got. Meaning I took two of my ruffliest pieces and paired them with a white skirt so that the focus would be on the green cardigan and camisole.

Actually, I think this is only the second time either the cardigan or the camisole have made it to the blog! So, thank you Salazar and Peter for the inspiration.

Only one more day left to vote for me as an expert deal finder! Even if you’ve already voted you can do so again until midnight on July 23rd! I would love to win the $100 gift card and show you how to find the best deals at The Limited.

Now, on to our regularly scheduled programming…

Funny thing, I actually wore this white skirt last Monday! And, yes, I managed not to get anything (major) on it while wearing it so here it is again. I stood in my closet for a bit this morning trying to figure out what white top to wear with it, though. Why white? Because today’s Inspiration Monday has Olivia Palermo wearing a crisp white outfit with some major statement jewelry.

Then I remembered this top that I don’t think I’ve ever actually worn to work. It actually goes perfectly with this skirt and after adding the camisole (got to keep it appropriate for the office) I decided to amp it up with some teal and red accessories (jewelry and shoes) to echo Olivia’s crazy statement necklace.

So, what do you think? Would you wear all white or are you too terrified of getting food on it? I admit, I took the photos AFTER I drank my morning tea so you can imagine that I was a bit terrified that I would get something on me.  But, success! Still crisp in my white on white outfit.

Things on my mind today:

  • It’s hot outside. And when it’s hot outside I want to wear as little as possible. No necklaces, no bracelets, and no sleeves. Thank goodness I can wear sleeveless to work.
  • I bought these shoes two years ago on a whim and I love them. Unfortunately, they are faux leather and, as such, they aren’t holding up very well. But I can’t find a suitable replacement just yet.
  • Today is Inspiration Monday and today’s photo reminded me that I really want a skirt in some kind of summery print. Floral or bright colors or something. Still on the lookout for one that catches my eye.
  • The last time I recall taking a picture with this top on I feel like my arms were a lot slimmer. But, let me tell you something, that is MUSCLE in these arms now and it helps me do amazing tricks at trapeze.
  • I spent my weekend doing incredibly fun things (standup paddleboarding, drinking sangria, hanging with friends, going to the zoo and riding bikes with my husband) so I didn’t get my DIY Jean Shorts tutorial done yet. I hope to have it done by Wednesday but I’m running a 5K race every night this week (yes, I’m crazy) so who knows?

And with that, I’m off to bask in the air conditioning in my office at work before the sweatfest that will be tonight’s Burgers & Beer 5K!

What are you up to this week?

Reminder! I’m over on Chippmunk talking about the great deals I get from The Limited and I would love it if you voted for me! Not only is it awesome blog exposure for me but there’s chance I could win a $100 gift card. And you know I’d pick The Limited and show you how to get the most for $100! Wild Kingdom

Today I paired my sleeveless leopard blouse with my mixed metal feather necklace.  Two animals in one outfit?  Wild!

I was in The Limited last weekend and almost bought a white pencil skirt.  I know, you’re probably thinking, “But, Erin, you have a white pencil skirt!”  Well, this skirt is a little more A-line than pencil.  But I decided I didn’t need another white skirt.  Look at me, showing restraint.  I did, however, buy a black peplum top that I will probably unveil next week.  I couldn’t show that much restraint.  I just had to go a little wild.

OTI: Gingham and Frills

Today’s OTI was a reader submission.  Gingham, a twirly skirt, and a cardigan.

I own a gingham shirt and I recently discovered that I love to wear it with this oatmeal colored cardigan.  Plus, I’ve been looking for a way to wear it with my white A-line skirt.  Throw in a fun pop of greenish teal with my new necklace and my favorite fun wedges and you have an outfit.

However, due to several things I have planned for today (including a party where there will be wine.  Red wine.  Red wine and a white skirt do not go well together for me) I opted to swap out the white skirt for a denim one.  And ditch the cardigan since it’s supposed to be almost 80 degrees here today.

I bought these shoes last summer on a whim.  I don’t normally like wedges but for some reason these just called out to me.  I’ve worn them so many times since then and almost always get compliments on them.  They’re not as crazy as my zebra heels but they’re more practical for summer and can be dressed up or down.

So, which look do you prefer?  White skirt and cardigan or no cardigan and denim skirt?

P.S.  I’m also linking up with Simply Sarah for her shoes link-up party!
