Wow. Okay. So, it’s Monday. And, just like Garfield, Mondays and mornings are very difficult for me. I had an amazingly fun weekend but it basically left me with no time to prep anything for this week. Including taking any blog photos. So these were snapped on my way out the door by my husband who wasn’t fully awake either and had the settings on our camera all wrong. Oh well.

Anyway, this outfit was inspired by the latest Style Imitating Art choice by Salazar, “Louison and Raminou” by Suzanne Valadon:

I couldn’t pose with a cat since I’m terribly allergic to them. Also, as we know, I don’t own anything orange. So, here’s my ode to the painting. A green sweater and my leopard print skirt. That’s close enough to an orange kitty, right?

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, yes, I did commute to work via train in the sub-zero temps this morning. I wore a pair of yoga pants over my tights along with my snow boots. And, of course, my down coat, scarf, gloves and hat. Sigh. Some day I’ll be able to leave the house without taking 15 minutes to add extra layers, right?

In fact, here are two outfits featuring today’s sweater and skirt that did not require the addition of 6 other pieces of clothing.

Okay, so, if I can’t find my dream leopard print shoes I mentioned yesterday I suppose I shall console myself by wearing my leopard print cardigan today. It’s not the same thing at all. But, it’s what I’ve got.

Also, this white collared shirt is what I’ve got. I bought it YEARS ago. I don’t even remember when. In fact, I think I might have bought it because I needed it for a work uniform or a costume. I just hung onto it because, hey, a white collared shirt doesn’t really go out of style. But every time I put it on I think, “I wish I had a different white collared shirt.” So maybe I’ll make that one of my goals this year. Figure out what in my closet I don’t really love and replace it with something better.

I’ve read that the non-iron dress shirts from Brooks Brothers are amazing but, dang, they are pricey. However, I suppose that  just like this not-so-pricey one that I have it will last for longer than I can remember and, if I really love it, that’s worth the price, right? Decisions, decisions.

As a testament to how much I don’t love this shirt, I could only find two other times I’ve worn it. I have another white collared shirt that has metallic silver pinstripes that I wear a lot more often, but this plain white one just doesn’t get that kind of love.

Also, apparently I really like to wear it with this leopard cardigan and these shoes. Who knew?

You guys! I’ve been waiting all week for this outfit. No, not just because jeans means it’s Casual Friday. No. It’s because I LOVE this outfit!! This was one of those weeks when I took all my outfit photos on Sunday (and, yes, I do wear every single outfit that you see) but I put this outfit together at the last minute. I’m still doing the no black in January challenge and I wanted something different than regular blue jeans. So, white jeans in winter it is!

The last time I wore these white jeans after Labor Day you guys loved them. So I hope you love today’s look just as much. The collared shirt was a last minute addition and I think it adds just a bit more sophistication as well. It’s also sleeveless chiffon which makes it the perfect layering piece. Less bulk and no sleeves to roll up.

Basically, I think this outfit just really screams my style. A little something edgy and trendy paired with something a little classic and structured.

Two things I wanted to mention to you today. The first, the weather is horrible. Yet I stood outside in it to take pictures. All for you! Okay, for me, too. Because I hate taking photos indoors. Also, in full disclosure, I wore my Uggs during my commute and packed my flats to change into. Yes, I’ve become one of THOSE women. The ones who wear Uggs. I don’t care. They’re warm. And comfy. And on a cold, gray, wet day like today you need some of that while waiting for the train, you know?

The other thing I wanted to mention is that it’s actually kind of difficult to make a black crewneck sweater seem interesting. I actually have several ideas saved on my Pinterest boards but several of them involve also wearing a blazer over the sweater. I just wasn’t in the mood for that kind of layering today (in fact, even the scarf is kind of driving me crazy) so I looked for other ideas. So, the black on black outfit might be kind of boring but it’s doing the job for me today. And it just goes to show that you can wear a black sweater with crazy animal print one day and tone it WAY down the next.

And thus brings us to the end of Take One, Pass It On week three. You know, if you want to see how lots of other bloggers are remixing the pieces in the closet from day to day don’t forget to follow Sarah’s Real Life. She’s the one who created this challenge and she’s the one who does the round of up all the participants every week. It’s a lot of fun to see how other people make new outfits out of the pieces they pass on from day to day.

What To Wear With Plaid

I know, I know, I just wore a sweater over a collared shirt last week. But the look is classic for a reason. It even got chosen as this week’s Inspiration Monday photo:

And in a case of getting something new and not wanting to wait to wear it, I received this sweater as part of my latest Stitch Fix order (full post to come on Wednesday) and I immediately wanted to pair it with my brown plaid pants.

Would you believe that for years I thought the only colors I could wear with these pants were brown and cream? The first time I wore them with chambray I was so happy. Now that I’ve got this green sweater I’m thinking of even more colors I can pair with them! Navy? Burgundy? Black? So many ideas!

Also, you may have noticed that I did not take something from Friday’s outfit to pass on to today. Nope. I decided that Monday’s are a reset on the Take One, Pass It On challenge for me. Cheating? Maybe. Do I care? Nope!

Normally on Monday’s I do Inspiration Monday with Two Birds Boutique. You all know that I love to use inspiration photos to help me come up with outfits but for some reason this week’s Monday inspiration photo was just not inspiring me.  Instead I  had an outfit in my head based on a Stitch Fix blog post I saw last week. A blue dress with a white button-up shirt tied over the top? Yep, I have those pieces. And I loved that the blog post showed how to take a simple dress and layer it up to create six different outfits!

So that’s what I wore. My brain is not firing on all cylinders this morning (although, let’s be honest, when is it ever on a Monday morning) so I needed something simple. And my husband even told me that my outfit was “cute”. He couldn’t quantify it beyond that, but I’ll still take the compliment.

Also, this morning I took 9 pairs of pants to the dry cleaner. Nine! So hopefully once most of my pants are clean I’ll start wearing something other than blue again. Although, no promises.

Mutually Inspired Series Day 3: The Striped Blazer

Did you know that my very first You Pick Wednesday post was helping Jen figure out fun ways to wear her striped blazer? She’s gone on to create some fun outfits with hers so I thought I would give a nod to history for today’s Mutually Inspired Series post and showcase a way that she created to wear her striped blazer.

jsb010813-1

I kept the same silhouette with the pencil skirt and blazer and also stuck to the same color palate with gray and magenta. At first I was struggling a bit to figure out how I was going to recreate this outfit because while I have similarly colored tops I didn’t know how to make any of them work. But then it struck me: wear a tank top over a collared shirt! So, that’s what I did.

White collared shirt, magenta tank top, gray pencil skirt, striped blazer

Yes, this is a tank-top that has almost gone to the donation pile a few times.  In this case, though, I’m glad I held into it because it was fun to give it new life as a vest!  Sure, I could have worn the tank top by itself but I thought that layering it over the white shirt gave it more visual interest and dressed it up a bit more just like Jen did by adding that little bit of white to her original outfit.

What do you think? Would you ever turn a tank top into a vest?

Today’s Inspiration Monday photo should have been easy.  Skinny pants and a polka dot sweater?  Polka dot sweaters have been everywhere this past season so of course I have one in my closet.

Inspiration Photo Source

Of course, Hilary Duff’s is ADORABLE while mine required a bit of finagling.  See, mine is actually short sleeved. So in order to give it some more interest under the blazer I added the collared button-up white shirt. I like that the sweater gives is a slightly casual vibe while the button-up and the blazer make it definitely office appropriate. And I incorporated the black and gray color scheme which promptly drove my photograph-taking husband nuts. “Can’t you wear something with color? Now we need to find a colorful background!” Mission? Accomplished.

Do you own a polka dot sweater? Don’t you love the one in the inspiration photo?

P.S. If you bought all the items linked to above (minus the shoes), your total outfit cost would be $122.41 (excluding tax and shipping). And the blazer, black pants, and collared shirt would become closet staples so you’d definitely get your money’s worth!

There was an entirely different outfit on the docket for today.  One involving a sequined skirt and a cardigan.  But here’s what happened.

My husband is in college getting his bachelor’s degree in chemistry.  And, as some of you may recall,  when you’re an undergraduate you have to take elective courses.  One of his courses this semester?  Digital photography for non-majors.

Now, I am super excited about him taking this course.  Why?  Because either this means I can rope him into being my photographer and using his new skills or he can teach me what he’s learned and I can apply those same skills myself.

The downside to this class?  We only have one camera.  Which means that in addition to scheduling things like who’s taking the car when and who’s using the washer and dryer when (yes, we do our own laundry) we now have to schedule who’s taking the camera when.  And he needed it this morning.  So, this outfit is actually from yesterday when I still had the camera and the chance to take a photo on my lunch break.

This outfit isn’t that different from the last time I wore this sweater but, hey, that’s how it goes when you’re trying to wear what you’ve got in your closet.  Still, swapping out the skirt and booties for pants and flats does a new outfit make!

But I still owe you a sequined skirt.

Just because it’s cold and dreary outside doesn’t mean you have to put your bright colors in the back of your closet.  Pairing a bright skirt with black and gray tones down the look and keeps it from shouting “SPRING”!

Also, here’s a hint:  wearing a cotton pencil skirt with tights is not the best idea.  I had to purchase my very first slip to wear with this skirt and these tights to keep the skirt from riding up like crazy.

When you play around in your closet you’re bound to discover that the right undergarments are key to making certain pieces work together.  And in this case if a $9 slip from Target can help me keep wearing this skirt into the winter then I’m all for it.
