Weekend Wear

Viagra and clonidine · Style Imitating Art

On Saturday Jason and I actually had time to run errands, enjoy lunch out AND take Chewie to the dog park. Plus, it was warm enough for a lot of the day that I didn’t have to wear a coat. Instead, I wore my white blazer with a scarf and my current favorite graphic tee.

One of our errands was checking out two furniture stores. We’re thinking about getting a new bed and want to find this one since it has so much storage in it! Unfortunately, while we can order it, we haven’t found a place in the city that has it in stock so we can see it in person.

However, while we were at one of the furniture stores I realized we were minutes away from Bad Apple and decided that I wanted one of their amazing burgers. Excellent lunch decision.

Then it was off to the grocery store and then home to change in order to take Chewie to the park. I’m pretty brave but not brave enough to wear white and be surrounded by pups!

Also, it occurred to me that although I didn’t set out to create this outfit as part of this week’s Style Imitating Art it kind of does. My scarf and the heart on the tee both echo the color of the accents and the gray background of my top stands in for the silver. Also, you hardly ever seen jewelry photographed on a white background like that (I feel like it’s usually black) so I think my white blazer helps the rest of the outfit stand out, just like the photo background.

Yep, it’s true. Today is my 35th birthday. I don’t mind saying my age because no one believes me anyway. And you can find it on all my race results anyway so there’s no reason to hide.

This outfit is way dressy for my current job but would have been totally perfect for my previous position. And for as comfy as jeans are, I do miss the opportunity to dress up. So today I am. So there. And so what if it’s super cold out? I miss dresses and skirts. I might have to layer two pairs of tights but I’m doing it anyway. I mean, if I wore a skirt on one of the coldest days of the year last year I think I can wear one this week.

I don’t have any fancy plans for my birthday. Apparently this makes my friends sad. But, you know, having a birthday so soon after Christmas makes it difficult to plan unless you get it done way in advance. So, we’re going out for drinks on Thursday. Jason is taking me out to dinner on Tuesday. And tonight? Tonight I have my first swim lesson to help me get ready for the two triathlons I signed up for this summer.

Starting my 35th year off with a bang. And a dress.

I’m going to be honest. I’m on my fourth white blazer and I haven’t loved any of them.

My first two were from Forever 21. The first one just always felt too boxy and too tight across the shoulders. The second one felt too short for what I wanted.

I mean, looking at the photos they don’t look bad. But when I wore them I didn’t feel good. And if you don’t feel good when you’re wearing something then it’s time for it to move on to another home.

I sold the first white blazer on Poshmark. The second one is currently still hanging in my closet but hasn’t been worn in over a year.

So, I went on the hunt for a white blazer I would LOVE and feel good wearing.

First try, the Target Boyfriend Blazer I mentioned in my July shopping summary.  I had high hopes for it. But, unfortunately, it not only looked like I borrowed it from my boyfriend, it looked like I’d borrowed it from my basketball playing boyfriend.target-white-boyfriend-blazer-review

Um, yeah. That will teach me to buy a blazer online that doesn’t list the length! Thankfully I have a Target Red Card so shipping was free and I was able to return it at the store a block from my apartment. Also, in case you’re curious, it’s more of a really, really light tan than a pure white.

Next up? The beautiful Club Monoco Gala Blazer. Definitely out of my normal price range but I had a c/o Shopbop gift card that would cover it.  I liked that the back was a little more fun but that it would also make it longer without being too long.

It fits great in the arm length and hits me at a decent spot on my hips, but I wasn’t loving it. It was too wide in the waist and too big around. Yet, the arm holes felt really tight on my arm pits. Plus, the split back didn’t look as good on me as on the 5’9” model who apparently doesn’t have hips or a butt. And it is 32% linen which I’m pretty sure would drive me crazy with the wrinkling. Again, thankfully Shopbop shipping and returns are free.

So, back to the drawing board. At this point, though, I feel like I’ll have to wait until next spring as all the stores have started carrying their fall items. It’s not a total loss, though! Now I know that I prefer blazers that are 24-25 inches long. That’s a key stat to know when doing online shopping for sure.

Two things you need to know about this dress:

1. It originally looked like this

fuschia_cardigan_print_dress 001

2. I turned it into more of a sheath dress by removing the elastic from the waist and gave it a higher neckline by wearing it backward.

Yes, this is about a DIY as I get. And why did I go to all that trouble? Because I wanted to recreate today’s Inspiration Monday look.

White jacket? Yep, I got that. Animal print sheath dress? Well, kind of. I never liked the original waistband of my dress all that much so this gave me the perfect excuse to see if I could alter it. And pairing it with this jacket gave me a new way to wear each item!

By the way, this is the last week of the Take One, Pass It On challenge and I’ll be participating today and tomorrow. Wednesday I’m planning on a review of the boots I ordered from Sole Society and then I’m taking Thursday and Friday off to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday.

I am TIRED this morning, y’all. So, so tired. Which is why I’m ever so thankful I already had this outfit picked out for Inspiration Monday. Now, jeans and a band shirt aren’t exactly office-appropriate so I went with the idea of blue pants and a printed top instead. And since I’m not a hat girl I brought in a bit of the manliness of the fedora with my white blazer.

Also, flats. So thankful for flats today. See, I rode 65 miles on my bike yesterday and for much of that I was riding faster than I normally ride. Today my legs are destroyed. And while I love the feeling I get after a hard workout, I also want to take it a bit easy the next day. Which means nice, comfy, flat shoes.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go find some caffeine to keep me awake through my three meetings this Monday.

After a weekend of go-go-go that caused me to pass out in bed on Sunday afternoon for an epic nap I decided to take Monday off from the blog. I was already off work so there was no real reason to get dressed up. Planting flowers on our balcony and doing ALL THE LAUNDRY didn’t really warrant the adorable red, white and blue Memorial Day outfit that Two Birds chose for Inspiration Monday.

However, this outfit was so adorable that I didn’t want to pass up a chance to use it as an inspiration. Hence, today’s belated red, white, and blue ensemble!

Yes, my pants are navy blue. We’re still working on figuring out how to get that to show up consistently. Any suggestions?

So, there was a sort-of unintentional theme to my outfits this week.  Can you guess what it was?  Here’s a different picture of my outfit that might help.

Still stuck? What if I told you that this week’s Friday’s Fancies theme is…..

Polka dots!

Yes, I seriously wore something with polka dots four out of five days this week. How did that happen?  Well, I knew that Friday I wanted to wear polka dots. And Monday was my polka dot dress because it fit the Inspiration Monday outfit so well.  After that I thought, hey, why not wear something polka dotted every day this week (minus Wednesday when I had already sent in my contribution for Work Your Wardrobe). So, I did. Turns out that I went from hardly owning anything polka dotted to owning enough items that I could wear polka dots every day for a week. Seriously. This isn’t even everything I own! There’s still a shirt and a scarf and another dress that I didn’t wear. Crazy, huh?

Which was your favorite polka dot outfit this week? The dress? The blue suit? The pencil skirt? Or today’s casual Friday look?

And don’t forget, next week I’m pairing up with Jen from Librarian for Life & Style for our Mutually Inspired Series!  Be sure to follow both of us to see how two different woman inspire one another.  Jen’s also giving away a $25 Old Navy gift card so be sure to get entered before Monday.

I admit, I did my copying a little backwards.  I had pieces of an outfit in mind so I just Googled until I found something that would tie it all together.

At first I was a little annoyed by how all the ‘”whites” in my outfit didn’t match exactly.  But after looking at the picture I see hers don’t either!  One of those fashion “rules” it’s okay to break: colors don’t have to match exactly!

A few other interesting notes:

  • I do own a white blazer, but since it’s another warm summer day (and the air conditioning in my office was on the fritz yesterday afternoon) I decided to go with this short-sleeved option.
  • And speaking of this short-sleeved option, it actually goes with the shorts I had on last week.  Don’t you love things you can wear as separates?
  • Don’t want to wear leopard print heels when it’s hot outside?  I don’t really, either.  Here’s what I wore on my commute.

I planned to wear the blazer today.  I put it on and then sweated my way through my commute.  It came off the moment I got into my office and has stayed off since.

So here’s what I actually look like.

Still pretty cute.  Believe it or not, I picked this shirt up on a whim in Old Navy in NYC in March and I’ve already worn it quite a few times.  Even though my husband refers to me as the Hamburglar when I wear it.   What does he know?

Our warm weather has finally arrived (again) so I’m breaking out the dresses!  I actually wore this outfit last Thursday to the Dots Spring & Summer Style Party but since I spent most of that event trying on other clothes I feel that it didn’t really get a chance to shine.

Dresses are great because, as evidenced by this one, you can wear them to work AND you can wear them to fun events.  Don’t have a job that is conducive to wearing a dress?  You can always dress them down with casual footwear and a cardigan or denim jacket.  See? Versatile!
