Pinterest Parallels [Vol. 18]

Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring · Pinterest Parallels

When I was chatting with Katie from Personally Paleo on Saturday she was asking me about whether or not I had any series on my blog. Well, of course I do! Style Imitating Art, to mention just one. But it reminded me that I hadn’t done a Pinterest Parallel in awhile. So here’s one for you.

I based it on this outfit that I saved on Pinterest. I mean, it’s pretty simple. A black dress with brown riding boots, a tan cardigan, and a leopard print scarf. I’ve had items like this in my closet for years. I even have two “little black dresses” that would have worked for this outfit.

Jason and I took these photos outside my parents’ house. They live on a golf course and this tunnel goes underneath the road. I was hoping that it would be less windy down there but, alas, not so much. Also, we forgot our camera so we borrowed one from my parents. Resourceful, that’s us.

Leap Year Red and Green

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

When I picked the “Leap Year Frog” painting for my Style Imitating Art choice I fully admit I already had an outfit picked out and photographed that I knew would fit my choice perfectly.

A few weeks ago Jason and I went to the Garfield Park Conservatory to get out of the Chicago cold and take some photos. Neither of us had been there before so it was also a fun afternoon of exploring. I took a bag full of outfits I’d already worn to work with the goal of recreating them among the flowers and plants.

I actually got the idea for this outfit from Cotton, Cashmere & Cat Hair and I thought that photographing my version with a green background versus her white, snowy background would make for a fun change.

As for how this goes with my Style Imitating Art painting choice, well, the red is pretty clear and the green comes in with the background. Plus, I took these photos in the tropical sections of the Conservatory. Frogs live in the tropics, right?

SIA Outfit: Bible Quilt

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter · Style Imitating Art

Happy Monday, everyone! I’m still in Tampa right now but I can’t be remiss in participating in this week’s Style Imitating Art series. Especially now that I’m one of the hosts!

Remember last week when I posted the beautiful “Bible Quilt”? Here’s a reminder:

I knew when Jen posted this quilt that I wanted to wear neutrals, specifically gray and tan. But I didn’t know exactly how I wanted to pair them. I tried a few different outfits and in the end settled on this gray skirt with a oatmeal colored sweater and my latest Le Tote accessories.

I actually loved this scarf so much the last time I had it in a Tote that I ended up buying it when I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Plus, you know, there are animals depicted in the quilt and this scarf is made of faux animal fur. It kind of makes sense, right?

The necklace added a much needed bit of color. Since I don’t own anything orange I thought the corals and pinks in this necklace were as close as I was going to get.

And, yes, I’m more dressed up than I needed to be for my job but, hey, I have a closet full of skirts. Why not wear them? With fleeced lined tights, of course. Because it’s Chicago. In winter.

Oh, and guess what! Next week I get to pick the art for the Style Imitating Art challenge! I hope you’ll think about participating. Remember, you don’t have to have a blog to share your photos with me! sc

Black and Navy [Pinterest Parallels Vol. 18]

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

A few weeks ago one of my blogging buddies shared an event on Facebook. For $60 you could get hair, makeup and two hours with professional photographers in a location not that far from my apartment. I’d never paid for professional photos for my blog before, but I thought this might be fun.

erin20_pp_pe

And it was! I was originally a bit stressed about what to wear because the location, Boutique Photo Loft, isn’t my normal aesthetic. However, the photographers had a plain white photo backdrop set up, too.  I decided this was a great chance to try out a black and navy outfit I’d saved on Pinterest.

I showed up to the venue after work with a suitcase full of clothes, shoes and accessories. The venue was in this old warehouse, on the third floor, behind a hidden door. I felt pretty ridiculous walking up and down the hallway over and over again trying to find it! Finally, I figured it out and went on in. After a short wait, it was time for make-up and hair. The artist asked if I wanted anything in particular and I said that I wanted my hair to have volume and my eyes to have drama. I’d say she delivered on both!

erin30_pp_pe

The photographer got some great shots and was pretty good at telling me where to put my hands, where to look, and how to angle my feet. I need that kind of direction because I never really know what to do. But, I did learn I’m much better at acting playful than I am at acting serious.

erin26_pp_pe

I had a fun time and would definitely do it again now that I’ve had the experience!

I have a few more photos to share of other outfits so those will be coming up in the next few weeks. Don’t want to overload you all at once 🙂

Also, in case you’re curious, I did actually wear this outfit to work. And later that week a coworker told me I should be nominated for the best dressed employee in our office. I’ll take that kind of compliment!

There are puppies (and tights) in this post [GIVEAWAY]

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

Disclaimer: The tights I’m wearing in this post were provided courtesy of Hanes but all opinions are my own. But there’s also a giveaway! Which means you could also get free tights!

So, it’s June. And that means I would really like to be able to go bare-legged. But June in Chicago means we have our fair share of Pacific Northwest-like days. Meaning chilly and rainy. And yesterday was one of those. Which is why I’m glad Hanes sent me a pair of their new Hanes Silk Reflections Sunkissed Ultra Sheer tights.

pink-blouse-floral-skirt-1Blouse – The Limited (same) | Skirt – LOFT via Poshmark (similar) | Tights – c/o Hanes (same) | Shoes – Jessica Simpson via Poshmark (same) | Dog – our new puppy, Chewie!

Admittedly, I typically prefer my nude tights to have some texture to them so I don’t feel outdated, but I think it’s okay to wear nude hosiery again. I mean, if Princess Kate does it the rest of us can, too, right?

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by these tights. They have a really wide waistband which eliminates the whole muffin top thing a lot of other tights do. Plus, you can get them in a thong style which also cuts down on the crazy control top sausage casing feeling.

pink-blouse-floral-skirt-2

They’re also run resistant. I’ve worn this pair twice and had zero issues. And they’re nice and silky feeling. I’ve honestly always preferred Hanes Silk Reflections when buying my gray and black hosiery so it’s nice to see that these are the same silkiness, if not better!

Oh, and for the taller ladies? I always order mine a size up than the size chart says and these are SO LONG! I mean, I’m mostly legs but I’m only 5’4”. There’s plenty of leg in these to go around.

They come in colors that are supposed to mimic cosmetics. I seem to be right between two colors but that’s because I’ve already been out in the sun some this year. The pair I’m wearing right now in Light Bronze will be perfect in the dead of winter while the Nude Bronze ones would be perfect for August after my legs have gotten more sun.

So, if you’re like me and want to wear skirts even when it’s not really skirt weather, you’re in luck! Hanes Hosiery wants to give TWO readers their choice of a pair of Sunkissed tights. I’ll be picking two winners on Thursday, June 19th so enter quickly!

Although you wouldn’t know it since the city of Chicago turned into a giant frat party on Saturday, today is actually St. Patrick’s Day. Or at least that’s what I’m told. I’m also told that if you don’t wear green on St. Patrick’s Day you get eaten by snakes. Or pinched. Or something.

Anyway, this is the outfit that H&K Style Journey and her friends chose for us to interpret for the holiday.

image

It took me a long time to come up with something to wear today that was inspired by this. Our Chicago temperatures are not going to allow for bare legs or short sleeves today so this summery outfit will have to wait.

Instead I decided to layer this dress with a sweater, tights, and a scarf. I don’t think this particular dress has made it to the blog before beyond a quick snapshot from last October. And I don’t think I’ve ever worn it to work. But it layers well and the faux leather accents add some extra visual interest so I have a feeling that it might show up more often now that I can think of more ways to wear it!

Can you use a vest as a pillow?

So, I will fully admit that I had a different outfit planned. But then the weather people lied to me and it snowed and was cold and Style Up told me to wear a colorful dress with some faux fur and here I am.

Now that I look at these photos I think this outfit would have benefitted from my black obi belt and solid black tights but such is life. When Jason took these pictures he told me I looked tired. I am tired. I could have easily used my vest as a pillow and taken a nap on the floor of my office yesterday afternoon.

Seriously, why don’t we get nap time as adults?? Huge oversight on someone’s part.

Two Pieces, Two Way – Day 2

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

Two Pieces, Two Ways- Day 2

For Day Two of the Two Pieces, Two Ways remix, Valerie and I are showing you how to wear this snakeskin print top two different ways. Valerie went with a great casual look with a pink accent scarf while I stayed true to my office style but kept the overall look neutral.

Amazingly, I’ve never thought to pair this top with a pair of jeans and my brown riding boots! Adding that to the list of outfits to try for sure. Be sure to visit The Style Files for Valerie’s thoughts on our outfits!

As for my outfit, I almost felt like some kind of office safari guide! Something about all the browns and khakis paired with this belt, I guess. Thoughts?

Wow. Okay. So, it’s Monday. And, just like Garfield, Mondays and mornings are very difficult for me. I had an amazingly fun weekend but it basically left me with no time to prep anything for this week. Including taking any blog photos. So these were snapped on my way out the door by my husband who wasn’t fully awake either and had the settings on our camera all wrong. Oh well.

Anyway, this outfit was inspired by the latest Style Imitating Art choice by Salazar, “Louison and Raminou” by Suzanne Valadon:

I couldn’t pose with a cat since I’m terribly allergic to them. Also, as we know, I don’t own anything orange. So, here’s my ode to the painting. A green sweater and my leopard print skirt. That’s close enough to an orange kitty, right?

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, yes, I did commute to work via train in the sub-zero temps this morning. I wore a pair of yoga pants over my tights along with my snow boots. And, of course, my down coat, scarf, gloves and hat. Sigh. Some day I’ll be able to leave the house without taking 15 minutes to add extra layers, right?

In fact, here are two outfits featuring today’s sweater and skirt that did not require the addition of 6 other pieces of clothing.

Navy Blue Suede Shoes

So, if you follow me on Facebook you know that this weekend I was on the hunt for a pair of navy blue pumps. Why? Because I only owned navy blue heeled sandals (seen here) and that just wasn’t going to work now that I’m wearing navy tights. I suppose I could have worn black shoes but, hey, I’m down for an excuse to fill a hole in my closet.

Which meant off to the stores I went. My new Fitbit (birthday present from my mom) tells me I walked over 5 miles on the hunt for navy heels. I finally located these, which I loved because of the ankle strap, but the DSW I was at didn’t have my size. Thankfully the salesperson was nice enough to locate them for me at another DSW and off I went.

Also while I was out, I picked up this necklace at Express. With a $10 customer reward plus a $15 off my purchase coupon this $35 necklace came to $10 plus tax. SCORE!

All of that because I fell in love with this outfit and wanted to recreate the emerald green and pink combo for today’s Trend Spin Link-Up. But, lest you think I just went shopping so I could recreate the outfit, that’s not entirely true. Both the necklace and the shoes were items I’d had on my wish list for awhile. The outfit was just the impetus to actually purchase them. Well, that and coupons.  The shoes were actually 40% off in the store and I had a $5 birthday coupon there as well.

And the snow? That’s just par for the course around here.
