The poncho I’ve been wanting to post

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

If you haven’t read Monday’s post, please go do that now. Thanks!

I took these pictures for the last Style Imitating Art challenge and while Salazar showcased one on her blog, I didn’t get a chance (or, honestly, the motivation) to give them their own post until now.

This has actually been a go-to outfit for me this winter. I bought the poncho at the December Moonfish pop-up after seeing them at an earlier one. I saw another poncho at lululemon when I was in Toronto in November that I loved but I said, no, I will buy it at Moonfish!

I’ve worn it with these jeans, black jeans, and even my black faux leather leggings. For some reason it makes me feel like I can take on the world.

For Christmas, my friend Annabelle bought me this wonderful necklace from a local artisan we met at a craft fair. It matches the poncho perfectly.

It’s made with watch parts! Isn’t that neat?

Anyway, I really love this poncho. I don’t know if they will be available at the spring Moonfish event, but if you really need to have one, just email them and I bet they’ll help you out.

I found Moonfish because of a connection I made through this blog and, to be honest, things like that are one of the biggest things I’ll miss about blogging regularly.

I mean, I’ll still shop there. Because I’ve loved everything I’ve gotten from Moonfish. Especially this poncho.

Weaving A New Scarf [SIA Post]

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

Last week I managed exactly one blog post: announcing this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge. Why so little blogging? Well, I was on a work trip to Oakville, Ontario (just outside Toronto) and we worked hard and played hard. Thankfully, I was still able to get my life back on track somewhat this past weekend and managed to get some time in with friends.

That’s where we took this week’s outfit photo: at the entrance to a friend’s neighborhood. The things you see in the suburbs!

For my interpretation outfit, I went with tan and a navy blue accent scarf. I recently purchased this scarf at a local craft show. Not local to Chicago? No worries. You can find them on Etsy from Jaclyn Faye.

Actually, when I first saw this week’s art, I was tempted to wear my cobalt blue top that has a gold zipper. But, believe it or not, I wore that this time last year for an SIA challenge!

So, instead, I went for my tan sweater and my new scarf.

This past weekend I also went shopping at the latest Moonfish pop-up, had lunch with friends, and finished watching Stranger Things 2.

How about you? What have you been up to recently?

As I mentioned in a previous post, the latest Moonfish Pop-Up took place in Chicago recently. I went over there for a morning of mimosas and doughnuts and, of course, did a little shopping.

I didn’t take pictures of all the beautiful clothes, jewelry and purses because I was too busy shopping, sipping, and admiring the decor that is Sugar Fix Dental Loft. Seriously, who knew a dentist’s office could be so beautiful? Sarah at Moonfish does such an amazing job of finding spots to host her pop-up.

And, of course, I had to be the person who wore something from Moonfish to show my support: my favorite scarf.

Sarah gifted me this cardigan when I first met her last fall and it’s been a staple in my wardrobe ever since. Everyone at the pop-up was enamored with it. Personally, I was enamored with all the comfy, neutral items that were available for sale.

Believe it or not, I actually bought the navy dress and the polka dot top to replace items in my closet. So, it was almost a one in-one out situation. Almost.

If you want to check out Moonfish yourself, the next pop-up will be in June in Edgewater. Make sure you sign up for the mailing list so you don’t miss out! In the mean time, I’ll be over here waiting for the weather to warm up so I can start wearing all of my new purchases.

Leap Year Red and Green

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

When I picked the “Leap Year Frog” painting for my Style Imitating Art choice I fully admit I already had an outfit picked out and photographed that I knew would fit my choice perfectly.

A few weeks ago Jason and I went to the Garfield Park Conservatory to get out of the Chicago cold and take some photos. Neither of us had been there before so it was also a fun afternoon of exploring. I took a bag full of outfits I’d already worn to work with the goal of recreating them among the flowers and plants.

I actually got the idea for this outfit from Cotton, Cashmere & Cat Hair and I thought that photographing my version with a green background versus her white, snowy background would make for a fun change.

As for how this goes with my Style Imitating Art painting choice, well, the red is pretty clear and the green comes in with the background. Plus, I took these photos in the tropical sections of the Conservatory. Frogs live in the tropics, right?

SIA: Thanksgiving Edition

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall · Style Imitating Art

Happy Monday! For those of you who celebrated Thanksgiving this past Thursday I hope it was lovely. For those of you who just had a normal weekend, I hope it was lovely, too.

I spent the weekend eating and hanging out with my family at my parents’ house. I took the opportunity to put together an outfit for this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge that highlighted the black, tan and blue in the painting “Freedom from Want“.

I took advantage of my parents’ house and chose to take the photos in their dining room to also echo the painting.

My parents have lived in their current house for just over 10 years so although I didn’t grow up there, by now it’s definitely “home”. I think it’s so interesting that no matter where I go or where I live it’s wherever my mom is that I consider “home”.

IMG_2696

P.S. When Le Tote sends you a short sleeved dress in the fall, what do you do? You turn it into a skirt, of course! I originally was going to wear this with just the sweater over it but at the last minute I added the button-up. I think it ended up adding just the right amount of interest as well as an additional layer to help me stay warm.

This is the second time I’ve gotten this dress from Le Tote. You can see the first outfit I put together with it here.

Don’t forget you can sign up for Le Tote and get $25 off your first month with code ERIN25!

Earrings make the outfit

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

There’s nothing too spectacular about this outfit. I’m not even wearing a necklace. My face is shiny (real life, yo) and the lighting doesn’t show off the fun gold polka dots on my shirt.

But, I wore this outfit last week to get my eyebrows waxed (again, real life) and my stylist could not stop gushing about my earrings. So, I suppose they were really the stars of the show. Literally.

I think I may just keep these from Le Tote. I’ve worn them at least three other times and I’m still trying to build my collection of gold jewelry.

Other things to note:

  1. I got at least three compliments on these shoes. But, I bought them back in December 2012 so they are clearly not available anymore. And, I can’t find anything really similar but I did link some cute pointy-toed flats with gold studs. Side note: when people compliment me on something I’m wearing I never know whether to tell them about my blog or not. Would that be weird?
  2.  Speaking of going to my stylist, I went last week and got my hair colored. Like, really colored. I posted photos on Instagram. I love it and it reminds me of the time I got it dyed this color in high school. That was still my favorite hair color of all time so I’m clearly pretty excited about this.  Now I just need to learn how to curl it….

Pinterest Parallels [Vol. 13]

I think I’ve finally figure out when to wear skirts and sweaters. I think it’s this time of year called “fall.”

Don’t mind me, just a little slow on the uptake.

I’d pinned three outfits that paired camel colored leather skirts with black sweaters (this one, this one and this one) and decided to merge all of them together into this outfit that I wore on a day that started out cool and got a bit warmer in the afternoon.

Still not sure how I feel about ankle boots with skirts. Especially black ankle boots. Every time I wear them I feel self conscious all day. However, I think if I’d gone with flats this outfit would have been way too “school girl.” My husband even mentioned it looked like of a like a school uniform.

But, really, do school girls wear faux leather skirts?

Blogging versus Writing

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

I recently started reading The Daily Tay after I bought my favorite shirt ever from her. She recently posted something that hit home with me about blogging. She wrote that she remembered when blogs were more about writing and sharing and less about who could make the most money or take the prettiest pictures.

I know, I know. I’m going to post a picture of myself with affiliate links to other items below it. And that’s going to seem totally hypocritical.

IMG_2218

But, seriously. I make so little off this blog and I certainly don’t take the prettiest pictures. Sure, I do the occasional sponsored post and I do get some great freebies to blog about, but even though I’m not a “big” blogger, I sometimes miss the anonymity of having a Livejournal account. Something that was just me and my thoughts (and the people who read them, of course).

Now, though, my name is attached to this blog and I can’t write as freely as I wish about some things. I’ve always tried to be careful about what I write (in fact, my husband got fired from a job almost 15 years ago because of something he wrote online) because I know the consequences. But that doesn’t mean I don’t occasionally have the wish to write something more about what’s going on with my life other than the fact that I got almost 40 mosquito bites on my arms, legs and face this weekend.

And don’t worry, mom. It’s nothing drastic 🙂 Just the occasional wish that I had someone to invite me to or go with me to all those fun events I see on Instagram. Is it still FOMO if you know you’re missing something?

Except mosquito bites. I am certainly NOT missing those.

Still Wearing White Jeans

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

Are you guys tired of my stairwell yet? I hope not. Between the weather, it getting dark earlier, and my attempts to go to the gym at lunch I can’t promise you’ll see a lot of fun photo locations. Sorry! At least I tried to brighten it up with white jeans and a puppy?navy-top-white-jeans-cream-cardigan-3

Yes, I am still wearing my white jeans. And, just to show you how versatile they are, I actually wore this same cardigan, top, and jeans over the summer but with my leopard print flats instead of these wedge booties. Just changing the shoes makes it totally work for fall!

navy-top-white-jeans-cream-cardigan-1

Actually, I think the white jeans in the fall thing is even more accepted considering I got an email from Crain’s Chicago expressing interest in featuring me as part of their Chicago work style series after the last time I wore these jeans. I still haven’t heard anything final but just getting the email was pretty cool!

Crazy Weather, Crazy Pants

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

Earlier this week you would not have believed it was August. I was wearing a sweater, In August. In Chicago. This is crazy.

Oh yeah, I also got my hairs cut. I hadn’t done anything to my hair since November and I figured it was time. I seem to be back in the rut of letting it grow out and then getting it all chopped off. I’m kind of digging it short, though.

I was worried that it would look ridiculous after a lunch-time sweat-fest (aka the gym) but it turns out that when it’s short like this it just sort of does it’s own thing and I kinda like it!

Very Little Orphan Annie meets The Great Gatsby, no?

Anyway, I honestly can’t remember the last time I wore my black cropped pants. Let me check. Hold on….

Oh wait. It was here. I highly recommend you don’t click that link. It’s pretty horrible. Anyway, it’s been over a year. Crazy to think that black cropped pants used to be  a work wardrobe staple!
