Plaid shirt with navy sweater, jeans, and leopard wedges

Thanksgiving Parade

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter · Style Imitating Art

As I posted on Facebook, I was really struggling with what to wear for Thanksgiving. My husband and I traveled to our hometown to spend Thanksgiving with my family at my parents’ house. My mom and step-dad keep their house much cooler than ours (68 versus 75 degrees!) but I knew that as I helped in the kitchen I would warm up. Plus there’s the whole part where you want to wear comfy pants. You know. Because pie.

(By the way, I made this Brussels sprouts recipe and it got rave reviews even from the non-Brussels sprouts fans. We made a few changes in that we blanched the sprouts before thinly slicing them and shredded the apple in the food processor. Oh, and we didn’t have grapeseed oil so we used vegetable oil instead.)

Anyway, back to my outfit. I ended up wearing a chiffon plaid shirt under a light sweater and it was the perfect combo.

These jeans are a bit too big in the waist thanks to the diet and exercise plan I’ve been on for the past six weeks or so. Which was perfect for going totally off plan and eating all the things. Because, once again, pie. TOMS cheetah print desert booties with navy sweater and plaid shirtI also thought that the colors in the plaid shirt worked well for this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge. Lots of primary colors which I think is unusual for plaid. It also helps that my niece wanted to guest star and her cream and metallic outfit works perfectly for the challenge, too.

Credit where credit is due

First off, I have to give credit where credit is due. I did not come up with this outfit idea all on my own. Nope. I saw a very similar outfit on AJ Wears Clothes and knew I had all the pieces to recreate it. I just had to wait for the weather to warm up! Now that ankle pant weather is finally here I’m excited to wear these lace pants!

Also, in full disclosure, I recently ordered an almost identical sleeveless collared blouse from The Limited because this particular one gapes at the chest (seriously, my chest is not that big!) and while it looks fine underneath things, there’s no way I can wear it by itself.  I’ll have to see how the one from The Limited works out once it gets here.

Finally, there’s one other thing I want to give some credit to for my wardrobe: Pressbox.  What is Pressbox? It’s a 24 hour dry cleaning pick-up and drop off service!

We used to have a dry cleaner in our apartment building but the quality was so-so, the woman who manned it was kind of surly, and she only took cash. When that closed I started going to the one I walk past on my way to the train but trying to remember to grab my stuff as I rushed out the door eluded me.

Enter Pressbox. They installed a block of Pressbox lockers in our building and I LOVE it! Seriously. I can drop my clothes off in the locker in my pajamas whenever I remember and it’s back to me in two days or so.

pressbox

You sign up for an account, you put your stuff in the locker, lock it and you text the locker number to the Pressbox phone number. They pick it up, send you an email with the price, and then text you the access code and locker number when it’s back. You can even reuse the bag they return it in!

And last night I dropped some stuff off and then realized after they emailed me the price that I forgot to put the “Replace Button” on the cardigan I put in the locker. I emailed them and they responded within 5 minutes and said they’d take care of it.

I am not a paid spokesperson for Pressbox. I just think it’s an amazing concept created by local Chicagoans. And since I don’t iron or sew, I am all about cleaners who will take care of those things for me. Plus the prices are really, really reasonable! It’s a win-win.

Actually, I don’t have zoo photos for you.  Sorry to disappoint!  We ended up having to skedaddle out of the zoo to catch our bus and I felt awkward asking my coworker to hang around longer while I took photos of myself. He doesn’t know about this here blog.

Anyway! On to the outfit.  You may be wondering what’s up with the random blue necklace.  Well, I originally saw this combo of tan, black, and leopard with a blue purse and thought it was something I could recreate.  I don’t own a blue purse so instead I went with blue jewelry.  Sadly, the weather is not conducive to leopard print ballet flats today so brown riding boots it is.

You know what’s also not working today? My brain. It’s been one heck of a week at work and I’ve been getting up early to get in my training for the Illinois Marathon. This will be my fourth marathon but the training never gets easier.  Which is why days like today I love that I’ve saved so many outfit ideas on Pinterest.  Makes getting dressed so much easier.

Tight Tights

Funny story about these tights.  Last week a reader (Hi, Aparna!) asked me where I got these tights.  “Target!  Merona brand!” I answered confidently.

When I got home and changed I quick looked at the tag.

Does anyone remember Kathie Lee Gifford?   Yeah, she kind of dropped off the radar in the late 1990s.  Before that she had a line of clothes at Walmart.

Which means that these tights are at least 10 years old, if not older.  In fact, I’m pretty sure there are photos of me wearing them in high school if I think about it hard enough.

Say what you will about Kathie Lee and her Walmart line, but these tights have certainly held up.

Thanks again to my guest photographer, Molly from A Foreign Land!

Inspired by Laura and the fact that I will be attending a strategic plan launch event this Friday afternoon, I went dressy casual with a maxi dress and a blazer.

I couldn’t get a good picture this morning, though.  This is what happens when you try to squeeze in pictures before work and your tripod is a highboy patio table.

Oh, and the sun’s in your eyes.

Regardless, I think this is a fun way to dress up a maxi dress for work.  Don’t have a maxi dress?  What about a long skirt with a top and a blazer?   Don’t forget the statement necklace!

Special Something

Last year I ran the Madison to Chicago Ragnar Relay with a group of people from work and some friends we recruited from outside the office.  One of those friends is Tom.   I didn’t know Tom before the relay but we’ve been friends on Facebook since.

Tom is an amazing man of many talents.  He is one of the most giving people I’ve ever met.  So when he was raising money for the Special Olympics he incentivized his friends to give by offering a free photo shoot for anyone who donated.

Tom and I met up today to take some photos.

He definitely has an eye for photography!  I’m excited to take these photos and create some fun things out of them.

I’m stupidly in love with this outfit.  And I never would have thought to put it together except I saw the idea on a fashion blog:

And thanks to Pinterest, I was able to pull the photo up on my iPhone while getting dressed Wednesday morning and recreate the outfit!

I got quite a few compliments on my necklace, as well.

All in all, a feel good outfit for me.

I’ve also worn this outfit this way in the past:

Cardigan, Top, Belt & Pants – The Limited

Shoes – Karen Scott/Macy’s

Necklace – Overstock.com/Race goodie bag

Today I skipped the belt and left the cardigan open.

Which way do you prefer?

Since I have no torso I prefer todays’ look.  It’s a little “sloppier” but I think it makes me look more proportional.

I have a bonus photo for you!

Tuesday was my husband’s birthday and this is what I wore to go out to dinner.   We didn’t go to that fancy of a place but sometimes you’ve just got to get a little dressed up!  Especially when your husband bought you the dress for Christmas.
