Same Black Dress, Different Place

Casual Friday

Have you voted yet? If yes, thanks. If no, why not?

This past weekend Jason and I drove to visit his parents in their new home in Carmel, IN. I didn’t realize until after the fact that the last time we visited them I wore this same dress, albeit under completely different circumstances.

No more mountains in the background, for one. Carmel, Indiana is quite a bit different than Flagstaff, Arizona.

Other than Jason breaking our car to the point where we had to borrow one of his parents’ cars to drive home and now we have to go back this weekend so he can repair his car, I actually enjoyed my visit. Carmel has an adorable downtown that I hope to feature in future posts. It also has a great biking/running/walking trail that I explored two days in a row. One day while running and another day while biking. I borrowed my mother-in-law’s bike and rode over 20 miles on it. And stopped for Square Donuts.

I may have also boasted that I’m pretty sure I can eat the Big Ugly burger at Bub’s and now I think someone is going to hold me to that. Maybe I’ll run the half marathon there on December 12th. Pretty sure I can eat a one-pound burger after that.

Anyway, Carmel might not have the skiing that Flagstaff does, but I think I’ll find enough stuff to keep me busy. Other than visiting my in-laws, of course!

P.S. It was in the 90s while we were there and I hate wearing shorts in the car, so I went with this dress since it can be dressed up or down.  Also, I just noticed that my attempt to photoshop out the HORRIBLE bruises on my shins from deadlifting 215 pounds turns out kind of ridiculous in the last photo. See if you can tell….#humblebrag

Casual clothes hoarding

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

Last night I was at an event and introducing myself to people and handing out my blog business card. One of the women asked me what my “go-to” store is for work clothes. I told her that it used to be The Limited but now that I don’t have to wear business or business casual I struggle with what to wear and where to shop.

Although, occasionally, I still find things at The Limited that fit my current work dress code. Or lack thereof.

Seriously, though. I’ve been at my current job for just over a year and I still have no idea how to dress! I have an entire closet full of clothes that either don’t fit, don’t fit with my current work environment, or just don’t seem to be “me” right now. Yet, I don’t necessarily want to get rid of all of them because I might need them in the future.

It’s funny because at work I try to convince people that it’s okay to delete old documents. But for myself I struggle with purging clothes. And emails. But that’s another story.

I told myself when I started this job that I wasn’t going to succumb to dressing like a slob. But, I admit, there are days when it’s just jeans and a t-shirt. Which, in reality, isn’t that much different from this outfit. But this outfit isn’t jeans.

In my latest Le Tote box that is on its way to me I’m getting two dresses. I hope they both fit. I also just ordered this dress in red as a causal dress – an item I don’t own very many of. Maybe that’s the answer for summer: casual dresses.

Or maybe not. Maybe I’m still a work in progress when it comes to how to dress casually.

Bucketfeet is the Best

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

Last night I attended a preview opening of the new Bucketfeet store in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago. Bucktown is known as a hipsterish haven and, as an owner of an original pair of Bucktfeet shoes, I was totally a fan before they were popular. Which makes me hipster, right?

And, yes, I was totally that person who wore the shirt of the band they were going to see. Except in this case it was the shoes to the store I was going to visit.

bucketfeet-1Bucketful believes art is for everyone so they work with artists to design the art that goes onto the shoes they sell. Their latest Chicago store front (only the third in the world!) has an art studio in the back and a spot where you can create your own shoe design and upload it so their head of design can review it. If he likes it you can bet you’ll see it on shoes on their website and in their stores.

I totally brought home those lavender shoes c/o Bucketfeet. I lurve them.

I learned a lot about the Bucketfeet history, though. While drinking a cocktail created by Chop Shop I met the Bucketfeet founder and the head art director/co-founder. Turns out the head art director drew on a plain pair of canvas shoes that the eventual founder wore all around the world and got tons of compliments and questions about. When he got back to Chicago he decided to start a shoe company that would give artists another place to share their art. Bucketfeet’s slogan is Art is for Everyone and their Bucktown location aims to embody that philosophy with not only shoes but a whole host of coloring books and other art-related stuff for sale.

To be honest, I wear my original Bucketfeet all the time in the summer and I wore them with this dress before I even got the invite to their store opening! Kismet, right? Everyone who works for Bucketfeet was so excited to see my “OG” shoes.

I also learned that Bucketfeet shoes are machine washable which is good because my teal pair need to be washed something fierce.

Cleary, since I spent my own money on a pair of Bucketfeet, I recommend them as a nice casual shoe that is a compromise between a sandal and a running shoe. And since patterned casual sneakers are very on-trend this year I definitely think you should invest in a pair if you need something to fill that gap in your shoe wardrobe. My husband thinks I’m adorable when I talk about shoes with such enthusiasm but, look, I love shoes. And I love my Bucketfeet. And I’m excited to have another pair to wear this summer!

A Blazer for the Weekend

Casual Friday

On Saturday I attempted something I’d never done before: swimming in Lake Michigan. I mean, I’ve been in Lake Michigan before but this time I put on a wetsuit and attempted to actually swim. The water was REALLY cold (like, 52 degrees or something ridiculous) so I didn’t stay in very long. But, I have my first triathlon (thankfully in warmer water) on Sunday so I needed to try out my wetsuit.

The rest of my day was spent getting breakfast from one of our favorite food trucks, taking Chewie to the dog park, and attending the inaugural 60607 Fest where we got to try Lou Malnati’s pizza, Palace Grill mac and cheese (with bacon!), samosas from Bombay Wraps, Spiced and Infused popcorn, and drinks from Jak’s Tap and CH Distillery.  After feeling like I was going to freeze to death in the lake I wanted to wear something comfy but not look like a slob. Queue the knit blazer.

I already have a red blazer but that one is a teeny bit too big and definitely more formal. This one is more like wearing a sweatshirt. I admit, I’m debating whether or not I want to keep it (it’s only $34 for Le Tote members…and if you want to join Le Tote I have my own code now that gets you 50% off your first month! It’s ERIN25).

On one hand, I don’t need another red blazer. On the other, it was nice to be able to wear this one and not feel like I was going to work instead of hanging out in my ‘hood on a weekend.

So, thoughts? Yay or nay on adding this to my closet?

Casual Bling

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday

Once again, it may seem silly to be wearing a sweater when it’s practically summer but I liked this outfit so I wanted to share it with you.

It’s an interesting combination of bling (thanks to Rocksbox) and casual (thanks to my sneakers from Shopbop).

Most of the people in my office don’t wear a lot of jewelry so when I wear pieces like this I tend to get comments. Good comments, though. In fact, the day I wore this one I got a compliment on it. It’s fun when people compliment my Rocksbox pieces because I can tell them how much fun it is to try out new jewelry all the time.

J. Crew Schoolboy Blazer with t-shirt, jeans and sneakers

Just Add Blazer

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

I put on this outfit, went to work, and then realized I’d worn almost the exact same thing just a few weeks prior. Except in that case I wore a cardigan and a scarf.  Something about this gray and navy combination with these sneakers is really speaking to me right now, I guess!

Of course, this time I added the blazer which I think takes this outfit up a notch in terms of work wear. It’s still really casual with the sneakers but it’s more polished than the cardigan. At least in my opinion.

By the way, my husband is working second shift this week which means he doesn’t get home until around 10:15 PM. I’ve been staying up to see him but it’s making mornings really difficult. Especially when I have physical therapy for my wonky right shoulder at 6:30 AM two days a week. So, the under eye circles are out in full force this week. More than usual, anyway.

Putting the Casual in Casual Friday

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday

Really quick before I dash out the door for a weekend away, I still feel REALLY weird wearing sneakers to work. But, my feet were killing me because of the shoes I wore yesterday and sneakers sounded good.

Basically, it may feel weird mentally but physically I’m enjoying that sneakers are “on-trend”.

This outfit felt really, really casual and there’s no way I could have worn it to my old job. But, it fits right in at my current place of employment and it was perfect for a day when I just wanted to be comfortable.

I based my outfit on something I found on Pinterest when I searched for “casual Friday sneaker outfits”.

Thank you, Pinterest.

What do you think? Did I get close?

Also, I have to say, I LOVE living in the city. Love, love, love it. I rode a Divvy bike to the beer event on Wednesday and then walked home (with a stop at a neighborhood bar on the way). I was able to get a last minute eyebrow (and lip, let’s be honest) wax on Thursday on my lunch hour without even leaving my office building. I rode a Divvy bike back to my neighborhood on my way home and stopped off at a local boutique to buy a gift. And all of that was super easy.

Never thought I would be a city-loving girl who wore sneakers to work, but there you have it.
