SIA: Sunset Outfit

Style Imitating Art

For the first time in the history of my Style Imitating Art participation I’ve had to resort to a “flat lay” of my outfit instead of a regular full-body photo.

I went with stripes, black, white and red to echo the sunset and the silhouette in the painting. And, of course, crescent moon earrings because what comes right after sunset? The moon!

However, as I mentioned, I wasn’t able to get a full outfit photo. Why? Because my life is a mess right now. Currently I am:

  1. Training for the Miami Marathon, which takes place on January 29th
  2. Working for the F3 Half Marathon, which takes place on January 28th
  3. Volunteering for the Good Life Race 5K which has their first meeting this week
  4. Trying to get ready for a trip to Santa Fe on Thursday
  5. Cleaning up our apartment so it can get ready for showings
  6. Packing up our apartment so we can move in January
  7. Trying to buy Christmas gifts for family
  8. Attempting to keep the dog from going stir-crazy while we get several inches of snow and the temperatures drop to below freezing
  9. Doing my day job

So, yeah, blogging is taking a back seat. And, honestly, I don’t know when I’ll have the time or energy to blog regularly in the near future. Especially with our move coming up. And trying to find someone to take over our current lease. And and and. Something’s gotta give.

All that said, I’m taking a break from blogging for the rest of the year. I’ll still be around on Instagram, though, if you want to follow me there.

Have a wonderful holiday/December/winter and I’ll see you in 2017!

SIA: Colorful and Abstract

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer · Style Imitating Art

I fully admit that when I saw this painting in the dumpster I was drawn to it because of the bright colors and the abstract nature of it.

Turns out, I’m drawn to that combination in some of my clothes, too! When I picked “The Door Within” for this week’s Style Imitating Art, though, I honestly didn’t even think about my watercolor print top! But when Jen mentioned it in a comment I knew it was the piece I was going to wear.

I also admit that I have not yet worn this outfit anywhere but for these photos. However, I do plan to wear it to work this week. I just had a really busy week last week and wasn’t able to get my act together to wear it and take pictures. Last Tuesday night I went on a lake cruise with the Windy City Blogger Collective and then on Thursday I participated in a Nike event where we did their version of a decathlon. I plan to post about that on Friday, if you’re interested.

IMG_8556

On Friday we drove down to Urbana, Illinois to visit my parents which is where these photos were taken.

Oh, and the biggest thing we did last week? On Wednesday we bought a new car! We bought a 2016 Mazda CX3 and, believe it or not, I haven’t even driven it since we’ve owned it.

So, yes, a busy week last week! This week’s a little quieter, thankfully. As much as I love doing so many awesome things I also need a few nights of sitting on my couch, you know?

Anyway, I’ll be posting the round-up of all the awesome outfits that were inspired by this week’s art choice on Wednesday. If you’re still wavering, I encourage you to put on something colorful, take a selfie, and send it to me!

Almost Interesting

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

I’m sitting here trying to think of something to write and I just can’t come up with anything interesting to say. Is it because I’m tired and my brain’s not functioning at 100%? Is it because I just really don’t have anything interesting to say?

IMG_2127

I can tell you that Jason and I took these photos on Hubbard Street between Green and Ogden in Chicago. The side of the train trestle is adorned with a series of murals known as The Hubbard Street Mural Project. So there’s a little bit of interesting Chicago information.

I can tell you that I ran a 5K with Chewie last Saturday and planted flowers on my balcony on Sunday.

IMG_2091

I can tell you that I signed up for a triathlon taking place on Sunday even though I haven’t swum a single stroke since August 2015 or done any triathlon-focused workouts. My wetsuit is probably still full of sand.

I can tell you that I’m trying to stick to my June goals and come up with date night ideas for Jason and I that don’t always involve going out to eat or spending money. Or, really, being outdoors or in crowds for long periods of time. Suggestions?

IMG_2098

And I can tell you that I attempted both a squat and a bench press personal record (PR) on Tuesday. I managed a 15 pound PR in my squat but failed at getting a bench press PR.  Win some, lose some.

So, I don’t know. Did I have interesting things to say after all? You tell me.

Twice as nice

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

As I mentioned on Monday, this past weekend I went to brunch at a restaurant in my neighborhood (thus accomplishing at least one of April’s goals). I met Sarah from Windy City Wanderlust at The Publican where we had some tasty eats. I’ll let her blog about the food so be sure to follow her blog so you can find out more!

Anyway, we then wandered over to the Randolph Street Market and on the way we stopped to take some outfit photos. Of course, I always forget to check the settings after Jason uses the camera and this time was no exception. So, sadly, I had it on manual instead of automatic. Which meant that the background is perfectly in focus but the foreground (i.e. me) was not.

However, I liked this outfit so much that I recreated it to try again. And, it’s not really cheating because I did wear it twice last week!

Plus this time you get bonus Chewie cameos!

Anyway, when I wore this outfit to work I showed up to a meeting and the first comment was “Wow! You look spring-y!” Well, I suppose that’s appropriate since it’s spring and all.

End of an Era

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

I got some sad news via email today. The Le Tote ambassador program is being discontinued! As an ambassador I got some nice perks just for doing what I was already doing: telling you how much I love Le Tote. I’ll still keep using Le Tote but I’ll have to rely on people using my referral link.

Anyway, speaking of Le Tote, today’s outfit features a striped blazer I got in my last Tote.

IMG_6748

Blazer – Le Tote (same) |  Camisole – The Limited (similar) | Jeans – American Eagle Outfitters (similar) | Shoes – J. Crew Factory (similar

I really wanted to like this blazer. It’s cotton-y and comfy and I would like a striped blazer to replace a navy and white one I consigned awhile ago. However, for some reason I just wasn’t feeling this one.

IMG_6755

But, again, that’s what I love about Le Tote. I got to wear this all day and then make my decision about whether or not to keep it. And, if I decide later that I want to try it again, I can do that.

So, even though I will no longer be an official Le Tote ambassador, I’m still going to use them and share about them here on the blog. And that’s how you know that something is good, right? I get no perks for telling you about it but I do anyway.

SIA: A different version of red, white and blue

Casual Clothes · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring · Style Imitating Art

Last week we saw the Turkish textile pattern that Jen chose for this week’s Style Imitating Art.  I fully admit that I struggled a a bit with coming up with an outfit. I don’t have much in the way of florals, I don’t own anything paisley, and I think it’s just a tad too early in the year to dress in colors I associate with the Fourth of July.

Still, I think I managed to put together something that fits the bill.

I kept most of my blues in the denim family and added the bright blue with just my shoes. Jen had also written that dots were a motif that was common in these textiles so that’s the pattern I chose. Plus, the top is red and white which goes with the fabric she chose.

Want to see how other people interpreted this week’s prompt? Check out Jen’s blog tomorrow!

In other news, I did a really fun interview with Sherry of Save, Spend Splurge that you can read here. She asked me about my clothing budget, how I learned about spending and saving money, and a variety of other topics. Plus, reading her editor’s comments is always a good time!

Beer Me

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

We’re having really warm weather in Chicago this week but back when it wasn’t so warm I needed some layers! Bring on the vests, I say. And the turtlenecks. And the boots. And the stairwell that hopefully you won’t need to see for much longer since Daylight Saving Time starts on Sunday!

IMG_6271

Vest – Groopdealz (similar) | Turtleneck – Express (similar) | Pants – Old Navy (same) | Boots – Sam Edelman c/o Shopbop (same) | Earrings – The Limited (similar) | Beer – Sam Adams

I go back and forth between beer and wine. I like to have something when I get home from work and while I’m making dinner. I’m also easily suggestible when it comes to what to drink. Take this “prop” for instance. I saw a guy on the elevator one day with an assorted pack of seasonal Sam Adams beer so I bought it the next time I was the store.

IMG_6279

Right now I’m on a red wine kick. But, as warmer weather gets closer I might move back to beer.  We’ll see.

Oh, and because it’s not a stairwell photo shoot without a Chewie cameo, here you go.

Leap Year Red and Green

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

When I picked the “Leap Year Frog” painting for my Style Imitating Art choice I fully admit I already had an outfit picked out and photographed that I knew would fit my choice perfectly.

A few weeks ago Jason and I went to the Garfield Park Conservatory to get out of the Chicago cold and take some photos. Neither of us had been there before so it was also a fun afternoon of exploring. I took a bag full of outfits I’d already worn to work with the goal of recreating them among the flowers and plants.

IMG_6355

I actually got the idea for this outfit from Cotton, Cashmere & Cat Hair and I thought that photographing my version with a green background versus her white, snowy background would make for a fun change.

Screen Shot 2016-02-27 at 5.37.23 PM

As for how this goes with my Style Imitating Art painting choice, well, the red is pretty clear and the green comes in with the background. Plus, I took these photos in the tropical sections of the Conservatory. Frogs live in the tropics, right?

Let’s have a little fun for Valentine’s Day

Uncategorized

We’re not big on Valentine’s Day in our house, but that didn’t stop me from putting on a fun red dress and taking some fun photos with a professional photographer a few weeks ago.

I found out about this professional photo event through a blog friend who used to do some modeling. For only $60 we got hair, make-up, and two hours with two different photographers in a really neat venue. I’m still waiting on the photos from the other photographer, but I couldn’t wait to show you these.

Because, I mean, if you want to have some fun for Valentine’s Day what’s better than a sexy red dress?

Stay tuned as I intersperse more professional photos over the next few weeks and tell you more about the event.

Big Hairy Work Dreams

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

Good morning! Welcome to Monday. I know some people have today off for Martin Luther King Jr Day but I do not. It’s just another work day for me. So here’s another work day outfit.

howtoweararedblazer

Blazer – Le Tote (same) | Blouse – old (similar) | Pants – Old Navy (same) | Shoes – Kate Spade c/o Shopbop (similar

Anyone notice the hidden Chewie in the photo above?

I spent several hours this past weekend working packet pick-up for the F3 Half Marathon that’s coming up this weekend. I’m working for them part time as a contractor doing customer service and, it’s weird to say, but I love it. I also love working packet pick-up for races. It’s hard to break into the racing management industry and it doesn’t always pay very much, but I love doing it.

I’m beginning to think that if I could make my living doing race management support part-time and personal training part-time I’d be a happy camper. And maybe running my own fitness studio (speaking of fitness, did you see my first post in my new Fitness Friday series?). So, I suppose I’d better get on trying to make that happen. Any suggestions on achieving a big hairy dream like that?
