Last of Le Tote

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

I read an article this week from the Independent Fashion Blogger website about how you shouldn’t take your photos at lunch because the lighting is bad. This made me laugh because sometimes lunch is the only free time I have!

Although yesterday my lunch hour was especially nice because it started off with a 30 minute chair massage courtesy of work. Nice perk, eh?

In an effort to make the most of my first Le Tote box, I’m wearing another piece from it today. This black and white chevron top.

As I mentioned, Le Tote sends you five items. You guys have now seen three. The necklace, the plaid top, and now this shirt. They also sent me a dress that was way too tight and way too dressy for my current job as well as a bangle bracelet that, while cute, would probably drive me crazy at work.

Still, I enjoyed getting this box and trying out new pieces I wouldn’t necessarily purchase. Or, at least, getting to try them out, wear them, and then decide if I want to purchase anything. For example, this top is insanely comfortable but, like the last one, it’s a little boxy on me. Plus, I already have a black and white patterned top and I don’t really think I need two.

Red shoes, though, I might need a new pair of those some day. Although, this particular pair has outlasted three jobs and a marriage. Not my marriage, though. I bought them to wear to a wedding and those people are now divorced.

letote-chevron-top-2I don’t plan to buy anything from this particular Tote, but I’ll definitely be trying it again. Especially since it’s a good way to get out of the “I hate my closet” doldrums without dropping a ton of money on a new wardrobe.

Stripes and Polka Dots

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer · Style Imitating Art

After my minor freak out on Friday, I was able to carve out some time this weekend to run 7 miles, attend my first Milwaukee Brewers game, get in a great workout at Crosstown Fitness, and take some outfit photos!

I didn’t want to miss today because it’s another Style Imitating Art pick, this time by Animated Cardigan.

Interestingly enough, the outfits that came to mind when I saw this were ones I’ve already worn. One was even for another Style Imitating Art post and the other was for a different style challenge I used to do. So, I figured, why mess too much with a good thing?

This outfit is actually quite comfortable and even though it’s something I would have worn to my less-casual office job in the summer, it still works for my current job. Albeit, I’m probably one of the most dressed up people in the office (seriously, cargo shorts and flip flops are the norm for guys and let’s not even talk about what some of the women on the phone sales team wear). Still, I feel good in this outfit and, for me, that’s part of the reason I get dressed. Sure, I could wear a ratty tank top and jeans to work, but why?

Although, this winter I’m pretty sure I’ll be all about the jeans. Which means I need to go shopping for jeans. Ugh. I’d rather go swimsuit shopping!

Put a bow on it

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

Happy Friday! Today is my last day at my current job and we’re having an appreciation lunch for some departmental liaisons which means I’m only in the office half a day. What could be a better way to end six years here? Well, wearing my favorite bow dress certainly adds some extra joy to a day that will be bittersweet.

If you had told me seven years ago that I would be moving on to my second job in downtown Chicago and living in a two bedroom apartment in the city with an 8 month old puppy I would not have believed you.

I moved to the city area for this job six years ago and in those six years my life has changed so much. I’ve grown so much professionally and personally. I’ve learned skills I didn’t even know I had. I’ve made more friends in six years than I had in all of high school and college combined.

Everyone keeps asking me if I’m excited to start my new job and the answer is yes! I am looking forward to the new challenge which is not something I thought I would ever say about myself, either. I will certainly miss some of my coworkers and some of the perks of my current job but I’m ready to do something new.

As I mentioned on Monday, I don’t know what the new job will mean for the blog but hopefully you’ll stick around for the ride. I’m sure it will be fun for everyone!

SIA: A Flamingo on the Windowpane

Why, yes, I am in Puerto Rico. Thanks for asking. So what am I doing posting an office-ready outfit photo? Well, see, here’s what happened:

Jen chose Chicago’s famous Flamingo sculpture as her pick for this week’s Style Imitating Art. And considering this sculpture is literally at the top of the stairs when I get off the train for work I knew I couldn’t skip this week.

chicago_flamingo_sculpture

Plus, I’d just gotten these pants back from the tailor and they fit with the theme perfectly. And I know you’re thinking, how do windowpane pants go with the Flamingo sculpture?

Let me tell you: the sculpture is located in Federal Plaza. Everything in Federal Plaza is built on a grid. See those lines in the granite? They extend throughout all the buildings in the plaza. According to Wikipedia (and my friend who is a Chicago architecture docent):

The entire complex is based on a 28 ft (8.5 m) grid pattern so that seams of the granite pavers in the plaza extend into the building lobbies and up the sides to create unity among the three structures.

federal_plaza_grid

Pretty neat, huh?

So, of course grid patterned pants fit perfectly with this week’s SIA choice! And I kept the rest of the outfit simple as a nod to Mies Van der Rohe, the architect who designed the plaza. And the touches of red to echo the Flamingo, of course.

I wore this outfit to work on Thursday and immediately came to the conclusion that these heels are sitting heels, not walking heels. I will be wearing this outfit again, but this time I’ll go with my trusty black heels.

Navy J. Crew Schoolboy Blazer with chambray shirt and red pants, Chicago style blogger, wear to work

Yes, I am still sticking to the #blackoutstyle challenge by wearing a navy (yes, this blazer is navy) instead of a black blazer. I figure that it’s only appropriate to wear today, the day after my birthday, since this navy J. Crew Schoolboy blazer was a joint birthday gift from my father and my husband last year.

I haven’t worn this blazer much recently but today was the perfect day to pair it with my new red ankle pants. I’m always wary of wearing ankle pants in the winter but since it’s supposed to be a bit warmer this week I thought, hey, why not. I didn’t want these pants to have to stay hidden until spring!

Finally Faux Leather

Do ever buy something and think “This would go great with X! If only I had X…” Yeah, that happened to me when I purchased this plaid tunic. I’d been wanting a pair of faux leather pants or leggings and when I bought this top I knew it would go perfectly with them. The only problem? I didn’t have any! I bought a pair via Poshmark but they were way too small so a few days before Thanksgiving, when I was off work, I went on the faux leather leggings hunt. I must have tried on 20 pairs.  I really wanted a legging/pant hybrid so I could wear them to work without feeling ridiculous. I finally found this pair by Vince Camuto at Macy’s for 50% off. They have belt loops, a real fly, and back pockets. And, since the back of the pants is stretchy ponte material, they are super comfy. Of course, I had to go to two different Macy’s to find them in my size but I’m lucky enough that I can do that easily in Chicago.

So, I wore them to usher at the first performance of the annual Christmas concert where I work. I also wore this same outfit on Thanksgiving but wore my red sequined shoulder cardigan instead of the blazer.

I’m super excited that I found these pants. I’ve always wanted leather or faux leather pants in my wardrobe for as long as I can remember (even when they weren’t “on-trend” like they are now) and I finally have some! I have lots of other ideas on how to wear them to work this winter so hopefully you guys don’t get sick of seeing them.

Another Day, Another Vest

When I was getting dressed yesterday morning I grabbed this plaid shirt because I thought it would look festive with my new red heels (which are still only $25 with free shipping, by the way). Originally I planned to wear a different pair of black pants because these are actually a tad too short for these heels, but you know how it is. The dry cleaning pile just grows and grows and suddenly you’re out of pants.

Or is that just me?

Anyway, I also wasn’t originally planning to wear this vest but then I realized it would make a good comparison to the last time I wore this same vest and shirt.

Two Ways to Wear the J. Crew Blackwatch Plaid Shirt

This time I paired it solely with black and red (and a little bit of necklace bling) and left it open instead of putting the belt over it. I like that it shows off more of the shirt but still gives the outfit some texture. And, as I type this, I realize I’ve now worn a vest two days in a row.

Also, hopefully this two outfits show you that if you have the same color bottoms in both skirts and pants you can change up an outfit just by swapping pants for a skirt and changing your shoes. Easy, right?

Only one more day left to vote for me as an expert deal finder! Even if you’ve already voted you can do so again until midnight on July 23rd! I would love to win the $100 gift card and show you how to find the best deals at The Limited.

Now, on to our regularly scheduled programming…

Funny thing, I actually wore this white skirt last Monday! And, yes, I managed not to get anything (major) on it while wearing it so here it is again. I stood in my closet for a bit this morning trying to figure out what white top to wear with it, though. Why white? Because today’s Inspiration Monday has Olivia Palermo wearing a crisp white outfit with some major statement jewelry.

Then I remembered this top that I don’t think I’ve ever actually worn to work. It actually goes perfectly with this skirt and after adding the camisole (got to keep it appropriate for the office) I decided to amp it up with some teal and red accessories (jewelry and shoes) to echo Olivia’s crazy statement necklace.

So, what do you think? Would you wear all white or are you too terrified of getting food on it? I admit, I took the photos AFTER I drank my morning tea so you can imagine that I was a bit terrified that I would get something on me.  But, success! Still crisp in my white on white outfit.

Yesterday I mentioned that I was meeting Jen from Librarian for Life and Style for the first time! And, to commemorate this meeting, I decided that today I would wear an outfit of hers I pinned and have been waiting to recreate.

Perfect for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, right? I left off the gray cardigan and wore my bright red shoes and a red necklace instead of the red belt but I kept the polka dot skirt and the striped top. Two of my favorite patterns to pair and I’m pretty sure she feels the same way.

And that must be why Jen and I got along so well! Two peas in a pod, we are. 07012013_blogger_meetup 001_edit 07012013_blogger_meetup 011_edit

Notice that I am wearing heels. Jen is wearing flats. She is still taller than me.

Hanging with Jen was a lovely way to start my week and I was sad that our time together was so short. I suppose now it’s my turn to plan a visit to Portland! navy_stripes_navy_polka_dots_3

P.S. This is my last post this week as part of Sarah’s Real Life “Pin to Real Life” challenge. But I have some fun stuff coming for the rest of the week!

Today I  have a lunch meeting to meet a new department head so I decided to forgo my usual Friday Casual jeans and instead wear this pleated jersey skirt (with pockets!) with my very first chambray top. Today is the day to showcase your favorite Target score for Whitney and Heidi’s  “We Love Target” link-up.

image

I bought this chambray shirt almost two years ago off the clearance rack at Target. I don’t remember how much I paid for it but I do know it was probably my best Target purchase in awhile (other than my red trench coat that also came off the clearance rack).  Unfortunately the Target closest to my apartment – the one I can walk to – doesn’t have the best clothing section, clearance or otherwise, so I haven’t gotten any good deals recently.

This skirt, though, I bought in 2009 at an outlet mall in Napa, California for a song. It’s super comfy and has held up amazingly well for jersey material. It has a slightly casual feel to it but it’s also easy to dress up, as evidenced by the time I wore it to work with heels.

However, to keep with the Target love theme, the shirt, skirt, and shoes listed in the links above are all from Target! Because, really, who couldn’t use a black skirt, a chambray top, and a pair of red ballet flats?
