Dogs and Tattoos [SIA Post]

Casual Friday · Style Imitating Art

So many things to tell you about today! We’ve got dogs, and hair stylists, and tattoos and more.

First, though, is this week’s Style Imitating Art outfit.  In case you need a refresher, this week we’re doing a painting by a Japanese artist that features cats. And tattoos. It’s also black, white and red with a spot of blue. So, that’s what I wore.

And, yes, I am wearing mostly items I purchased from Moonfish. I love that I can create an entire outfit when I go!

Also, you may have noticed that my hair is super curly in these photos. Well, I visited Spoke &  Weal, an Aveda salon in Chicago, for a complimentary color session from stylist Noemi. She introduced me to some new hair products and did some crazy magic with my curls. It’s crazy! She also did some subtle balayage to add more of my natural highlights.

IMG_5993

She also told me that stylist Siobhan is the best at cutting curly hair. I didn’t get it cut this weekend but it almost feels like I did with the way my curls are behaving! Also, all of their appointments start with a neck and shoulder massage. Yes, please! I also got a hand massage while waiting for my color to process. I suppose that helps take part of the sting out of the two hours it takes to color my hair.

Other things I did this weekend? I took Chewie over to my friend Annabelle’s place. Chewie is not the best at going to new places or dealing with new people but he was actually amazing at Annabelle’s! It gives me hope that maybe one day he’ll be totally chill with new experiences.

IMG_5991

Oh, yeah, we also got our backyard partially landscaped this past weekend. No more mud! Hooray! Also, we now have a patio in addition to a deck. The perfect spot for taking some photos of my Spot tattoo. Jen suggested I highlight my tattoos that honor my animals since this week’s SIA was about tattoos and animals.

IMG_6001

My other two dog-related tattoos are on my back and I wasn’t planning to go shirtless on the internet. So, here’s my tattoo honoring the first dog Jason and I adopted: Spot. He was 10 or 11 when we adopted him and that was the name he came with so we didn’t change it. Although, have you ever actually met a dog named Spot?

Overall, it was a pretty amazing weekend. For both humans and dogs.

Oh, and don’t forget to visit Salazar’s blog tomorrow to see the round up of everyone’s SIA outfits for this week.

The almost perfect gray jacket

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

I’m always on the lookout for jackets or blazers or what have you that can elevate a casual look from super casual weekend to less causal work but still be comfy.

I thought I’d found it with this jersey fabric jacket from Le Tote and, while it looks awesome in the photos, it has some weird shoulder pads going on that seem to be making my shoulders look really broad.

IMG_7031

The shoulder pads seem to be part of the design and structure of the jacket, though, so it’s not like I could just snip them out.  Which is too bad because this jacket is super comfy, has pockets, three-quarter sleeves (my favorite!) and is otherwise perfect. In terms of comfort level It’s more like a sweatshirt than a jacket and that’s a-okay by me.

Actually, to be honest, I’ve noticed that I’ve been feeling like a marshmallow on toothpicks lately. I have to wonder if my shoulders are actually getting broader or if it’s my imagination! I mean, I have no problem with them getting broader but it does mean I might have to rethink some of what I wear.

Or not. I’m still undecided.

When it rains

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

My life has generally been going pretty well, you guys. I had a great summer, I kicked butt at the Chicago triathlon, and all seemed right with the world.

And then my driver’s license and all my credit and debit cards were stolen.  Jason had some car issues that meant we had to go to Indiana two weekends in a row (three if you count this upcoming weekend when I will not be going with). Chewie seems to have developed the hacking crud and we’re keeping our fingers crossed it’s not dog flu. In other words, all the shit hit the fan at the same time.

So, I’m sure you’ll forgive me if I go with a mindless outfit and revert to a basic color combination: red, white and black.

IMG_9004Bad things come in threes, right? So here’s hoping that I’ve had my share of crap for the time being. I know that in the grand scheme of things, this is nothing. I got my driver’s license replaced the same day it was stolen (thank goodness for having a passport). I got my credit cards shut down and reported before the thief could rack up too many charges and they’ve all since been replaced. Jason’s parents were nice enough to lend us a car and Chewie is young and healthy so I’m sure he’ll make a full recovery.

Still, it would be nice to end the summer on a high note and start to feel inspired to create outfits again. So, keep your fingers crossed the universe turns around and at least the rest of this week goes well. Mmmkay? Thanks.

Take Your Mom to Paris

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday

I’ve never been to Paris. I was supposed to go once at my old job but it ended up falling through. So, the closest I’ve come was a cooking class I took with my mom this past Mother’s Day at The Chopping Block here in Chicago.

The class was called Take Your Mom to Paris and we made frisee salad with warm bacon vinaigrette, homemade croutons, poached eggs, green beans with tomatoes, croque monsieurs, and a strawberry custard.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.42.44 PM So of course I went with the most stereotypical French outfit I could think of. Black and white stripes with black jeans and red shoes.

I left off jewelry because I knew I’d be cooking and I didn’t want to worry about getting something in the food. It was chilly and rainy on Mother’s Day, though, so I added a black cardigan and my black and white polka dot scarf.

However, my “in action” photos didn’t capture the cardigan and the scarf. Cooking makes you warm!

10464065_10204099429427808_6148758928482108718_nIt was a great way to spend Mother’s Day and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for something to do with your mom next year. Or just something fun to do with your girlfriends. Or significant other. Or, heck, go by yourself! They let you drink while you cook so you’re bound to make some new friends if you order a bottle of wine and share.

Pinterest Parallels [Vol. 10]

In an effort to not default to my white jeans or white blazer EVERY day of the Top 10 Remix challenge, I decided to give my leopard print shirt another try. In fact, I decided to wear it in a way inspired by the creator of the Top 10 Remix Challenge itself: Sarah.

This is originally my third attempt at an outfit. As I laid in bed on Monday night I thought “what am I going to wear tomorrow that ISN’T my white jeans or white blazer?” (Because I’m pretty sure I’m wearing my white blazer tomorrow…)

Le Tote had recently sent me a pair of ponte ankle zipper legging pants with the instructions to throw out the rule that leggings are not pants. Well, I thought, even though I don’t agree why not give it a try? So I tried them on with this shirt and crewneck sweater and heels. Which I wore around the house as I made breakfast and packed my lunch.

And realized that even ponte ankle zipper leggings are NOT PANTS and that I felt really, really uncomfortable. So I swapped the crewneck sweater for this cardigan but the cardigan wasn’t long enough to fully cover my butt. I thought about my long black cardigan but the navy and black wasn’t working for me this morning and it didn’t occur to me to try my long tan cardigan.  At this point I was running late so I decided just to use Sarah as my inspiration and throw on  jeans and my red flats.

This shirt still feels too voluminous but at least I didn’t spend the entire day tugging my shirt down over my butt. Win some, lose some, you know?

Oof, you guys. I apologize in advance for this photo and, really, this outfit. I wanted to wear my leopard shirt since it’s part of my Top 10 Remix and I wanted to wear it with my green jeans in order to try and emulate this pin.

Yes, I swear my  jeans are a dark green color. Not that you can tell because I asked my husband to snap a photo using my iPhone after a long day of work, riding a Divvy bike home, and meeting him at the dog park.

Anyway, I wanted to love this outfit but it just wasn’t working for me. The jeans are too high waisted to tuck the shirt into so I tried leaving it loose (looked too big) and I tried tying it in a knot (felt sloppy).  Kind of a lose-lose situation.

I originally added this shirt to my Top 10 Remix because I lusted after it for almost a year before I broke down and bought it online. Now, though, I hate to say it, but it feels too big! It might become a shirt I only wear under things instead of on its own.

Also, when looking for similar jeans I kind of fell in love with these pants from Old Navy. Their pants don’t normally fit me but it couldn’t hurt to order them, right?  It wouldn’t hurt to have more casual pants, right?

Why I finally added graphic tees to my wardrobe

Casual Friday

When I worked in a business casual office we sort of had an unwritten rule that you shouldn’t wear any shirts with words on them. Unless, of course, it was a shirt from the university bookstore (yes, I used to work at a university). So when I’d see gals online wearing cute graphic tees with fun jewelry and jackets I’d get sad. I didn’t even own any graphic tees that weren’t from some running shoe manufacturer that I got for free in a raffle or from a race.

But now at my current job I can basically wear whatever I want. So, I do. And the first thing I decided was that I wanted to add some graphic tees to my wardrobe.

So I did.

red-tweed-jacket-graphic-tee-3I originally saw this top at Milk Handmade, a local boutique, but they didn’t have my size. So imagine how excited I was to find it at the One of a Kind show I went to back in December. I’ve since included this top in my 12 Pieces, 12 Ways post and I get excited every time I think of a new way to wear it. Which is why I included it in my Top 10 Remix Challenge.

The tee has a little heart where Chicago is which I think it appropriate. I never EVER thought I would end up loving the city so much. I never thought of myself as a big city gal. But, it turns out, I am. I may not stay in Chicago forever, but I will love it forever for many reasons.

red-tweed-jacket-graphic-tee-1P.S. Getting Chewie to look at the camera was NOT going to happen. Way too many dogs walking by just off-camera.

Sharing this Top 10 Remix outfit with Sarah who started this whole thing. This post has TWO of my pieces in it which I think means it has to be shared.

I know I’ve talked about Le Tote before but they recently added a new feature where you can swap out items in your Tote before it ships! Meaning if they’ve put something in that you’re just not in the mood for or you don’t think you’ll have an opportunity to wear you can swap it for a different piece.

I did just that with this top. There was something kind of plain and solid colored in the batch and I decided I wanted to try something colorful. And here we are.

letote-top-blue-cardigan-3And keeping with the colorful theme, I tossed on my red flats because wearing nude flats just seemed too boring. Although, I admit, with this much color on I kind of felt a little clownish.

Regardless, I liked all the colors in the top but the bottom hem had these weird slits in the front towards the sides that I didn’t find particularly flattering. Which is why I’m glad it’s from Le Tote! I can wear it once and send it back. letote-top-blue-cardigan-2

Jackie Kennedy as a Style Icon [sponsored by Boohoo.com]

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer · Shopping

I received this dress and monetary compensation from Boohoo.com. As always, all opinions are my own.

A few weeks ago Boohoo reached out to me to see if I would be interested in putting together a Throwback Thursday look inspired by a past style icon. I perused their website full of fun and well-priced items but was having a really difficult time figuring out just who my style icon even is!

So, I asked a friend who I think just started naming off brunettes. But when she said Jackie Kennedy I realized that she’d hit the nail on the head. Especially because I was already eying a dress that fit Jackie’s style perfectly.

jackie-kennedy-red-dress-inspirationDress – c/o Boohoo (same) | Necklace – Express (similar)  | Shoes – MIA (similar)

boohoo-persie-dressThis dress is perfect for those of us that either have hips and want to camouflage them or don’t have hips and want to look like we have curves. The pleats at the waist give the lower half of the dress a really interesting silhouette and (bonus!) add pockets! And you know how I love a dress with pockets.

It also comes in a light peach color that echoes Jackie Kennedy’s dress as seen here:

jackie1Except this Boohoo Persie Pleat dress has a bow on the back instead of the front.

boohoo-red-dress-5When I was looking at the Boohoo website I found that quite a few of their dresses are very “mod”. Boohoo is a British website (although they have free shipping to the U.S. if you spend $50 or it’s only $4.99 if you spend under $50) so it made me wonder a bit if the style in the UK is trending toward 1960s “mod,” I’m definitely more of a fan of Jackie’s classic early 1960s style so I was happy that I found a dress that fit my aesthetic.

Boohoo does have a lot of fun options, though, and would be a great choice if you’re looking for something trendy at a palatable price point (and can’t stand going to the mall). Just one word of caution: pay attention to the size conversions. I ordered a UK size 8 which they say is a US size 4. This dress fit me perfectly but sometimes the UK conversions run a tad small. Evidenced by the fact that in many stores I can fit into a US size 2.

Regardless, I’m glad Boohoo reached out to me. I’ve linked to some of their items as similar to ones I already own in the past and I was happy to get to try something in person. The quality was decent for the price and I was excited that it fit so well.

Now I just need a place to wear a Jackie Kennedy-esque red dress. Anyone need me to go to any Presidential functions any time soon?

Wild and Crazy Outfit

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

Greetings from Arizona! I’m visiting my in-laws right now with plans to go skiing and possibly snowboarding. I originally had visions of doing an entire week of posts about what to wear to holiday parties but couldn’t get my act together. Thankfully I was able to get some pics of outfits I wore in the past two weeks to share with you instead.

And hopefully when I get back I can do a run down of what I packed and all the different outfits I could make out of those items.

In the mean time, here’s one of my favorite outfits I’ve worn in the past few weeks. And, of course, it features the ubiquitous blanket scarf.

I mean, red and black isn’t a crazy combo, but with PLAID!

Okay, it’s still not that crazy.

Also, I’m trying to write this post while my in-laws watch SNL and it’s really difficult. So, I’ll just leave you with another photo of my WILD AND CRAZY outfit.
