Greetings from Arizona! I’m visiting my in-laws right now with plans to go skiing and possibly snowboarding. I originally had visions of doing an entire week of posts about what to wear to holiday parties but couldn’t get my act together. Thankfully I was able to get some pics of outfits I wore in the past two weeks to share with you instead.
And hopefully when I get back I can do a run down of what I packed and all the different outfits I could make out of those items.
In the mean time, here’s one of my favorite outfits I’ve worn in the past few weeks. And, of course, it features the ubiquitous blanket scarf.

I mean, red and black isn’t a crazy combo, but with PLAID!
Okay, it’s still not that crazy.
Also, I’m trying to write this post while my in-laws watch SNL and it’s really difficult. So, I’ll just leave you with another photo of my WILD AND CRAZY outfit.
I know maxi skirts have been in style for awhile now and I know that some people swear by them. I do own two maxi dresses but, believe it or not, I don’t own any maxi skirts. So, I decided to try one from Le Tote (<- referral link) to see if it was something I wanted to add to my closet.
Strangely enough, once I got it I stood in front of my closet for what must have been 30 minutes trying to figure out what to wear with it. I’ve even written a post on how to wear maxi skirt to the office and yet I still couldn’t come up with anything. Except this.
Maybe it’s because it was cool and rainy out the day I wore it so I wanted to wear boots. Maybe it’s because I felt weird tucking something into it. Maybe it’s because I felt that anything I put with it could just as easily be done with my black maxi dress. Whatever it was, I was really struggling.
And after I put this outfit together I spent the entire day feeling like I was wearing a costume. Specifically, I felt as though I was dressed up as myself from college. I had a black maxi skirt that wore all.the.time in college and I liked to pair it with black loafers or black boots.
But I’m glad I tried this skirt from Le Tote. It told me that I don’t need a black maxi skirt in my closet right now. Maybe I’ll feel differently in the summer and I’ll see if they can send it to me then. For now, though, I won’t be adding one to my wardrobe!
Yesterday I asked which part of my outfit I’d be passing on as part of the Take One, Pass It On challenge and, well, as you can see, it was the cardigan! Yes, I chose to wear this sequined sweater again because today’s Trend Spin theme is sweaters. Plus, pairing it with gold and brown instead of black and white is a great way to see how versatile red actually is. It’s just too bad that my photographer is busy with finals because it’s REALLY difficult to get a photo of the sequins on the shoulder of this cardigan by myself.
Which look with this cardigan is your favorite? Black and white or brown and gold?
I swear to you I was at Target to get light bulbs and toothpaste, not a cardigan! Okay, that’s not entirely true. I always check the Target coupons and Cartwheel before I go to Target and since there was a $5 off an apparel purchase plus 15% off a sweater with Cartwheel AND I’ve been wanting to get a new red cardigan, well, I had to at least look, right?
Plus, the color and placement of the sequins on this one just go so perfectly with the Style Imitating Art piece that Jen picked for this round!
The coppery gold color reflects the uniform embellishments and the placement on the shoulders reminds me of uniform epaulettes. And of course red, black and white to echo the other major colors in the painting.
I also think it’s fitting that I took these outfit pictures outside the Art Institute of Chicago which is where Jen originally saw this painting. Nice symmetry, yes?
And, yes, I am still doing the Take One, Pass It On challenge but, as a reminder, I use Mondays as a reboot. And I already have some fun outfits planned for the rest of the week. Starting with….actually, you get to guess. Which piece from today do you think I’ll be using tomorrow?

It’s officially fall so I suppose that means it’s okay to break out the boots! I typically try to wait until the highs are in the 60s before I take my boots out of the closet for fall. Don’t want to rush the end of summer, right? Or maybe that’s just me. Because I don’t drink coffee I can’t get on the style blogger fall bandwagon and have a pumpkin spice latte in my hand (unless it’s a pumpkin spice chai latte from Argo Tea) and I don’t want to wear boots before it’s time.
Also, I could NOT come up with an outfit that involved pants for today’s Inspiration Monday photo.

Olivia Wilde is beautiful and apparently has a really long torso. I do not have a really long torso. So while I contemplated black pants with my white studded leopard print shirt I knew it wouldn’t look nearly as good on me as it does on her. So, instead I went with the black, white and red color theme in her shirt. And boots. Because it’s fall. And I don’t want to fail at ALL the style blogger stereotypes.
This year is all about going out of my comfort zone in terms of colors. Last year I bought a gold sequined dress even though I rarely wear gold. And then I saw a photo online that made me crave more gold. When I saw this gold tank top on the clearance rack at The Limited I knew I had to have it.
So, this is my interpretation of the outfit above. I have a few other ideas for this gold top as well. But all of this means one other thing: I need to actually buy some gold jewelry!!
