Jen from Fashionably Employed had a great idea: get some bloggers together to show you multiple ways to wear a patterned skirt in various seasons. Today we’re showing you the Summer Edition!

I chose my off-white pleated polka dot skirt because I thought it would be the biggest challenge to style for multiple seasons. Turns out I already have some ideas on how to wear it in the winter!

My biggest challenge for this particular post, though, was figuring out how to make this skirt look more casual for my office. My solution? A tee shirt.

Dressing down a pleated skirt with flat sandals and a tee shirtA tee shirt basically makes any outfit casual. Also, pairing it with flat sandals helps out, too.

Of course, my original outfit that I wore when I was at my previous job was still pretty casual with the denim jacket. More of a Casual Friday kind of vibe going on there. Either option, though, is a great choice when you have a semi-fancy skirt that you want to dress down.

Are Those Stripes or Just Heat Shimmers?

Welcome to day four of the “I wish I could go to work in my swimsuit” portion of our summer. Sadly, as I lament every year, this is frowned upon unless you work at a beach or a pool. So, instead, I’m wearing all cotton because I hear this helps somehow with the heat. Actually, I’m wearing this top because today is Third Thursday Threads over at Work Clothes, I Suppose and the theme is Stripes. Since my striped tank top is in the laundry I had to wear this striped tee since all my other striped items are long sleeved. And there is NO WAY I’m wearing long sleeves today. Nope, no can do.

The hardest part was figuring out what to pair with this top. In the end, I went with a simple black and white combo with some pattern mixing. I like to think that the horizontal stripes of the shirt contrast nicely with the vertical pattern on the skirt. If it really just look like I grabbed two black and white items out of my closet, well, I’ll blame it on heat stroke. Although, the more I wear this outfit the more I like it. Hey, just another fun way to wear patterned black and white skirts! Pair them with a black and white striped tops!

P.S. 5 5Ks in 5 Days is going swimmingly although it means my evenings basically consist of running and recovering. Anyway, tonight is #4 and if you want you can follow me on Twitter with the hashtag #5Ks5Days.

I know, I know.  I just wore this skirt last week.  But, hey, one of my goals is to show you how to wear the items you have in different ways.  Which means wearing things I own lots of times!

Last week I wore this skirt with black.  That’s a safe pairing.  Black and white skirt with a black top?  Of course.  I’ve also worn it with pink. But, really, it could go with all kinds of colors.  So, I’ll wear it over and over again.

And now, how about a funny Friday story?

I always wear the same rings on three fingers of my right hand.  And of course my wedding ring on my left hand.  This story is about the ring I wear on my right index finger.

photo

I’ve had this ring since high school.  My dad gave it to me as a gift.  For anyone who doesn’t want to do the math, that means I’ve been wearing this ring for approximately 15 years.

As you can see, the ring isn’t a fully complete circle.  This is nice because it’s adjustable.  What it also means is that it has a tendency to get stuck on things and bent out of shape.  I’ve actually had it repaired several times because it got caught and bent so much it broke.  But, I love it and don’t want to give it up.

So imagine my horror when last Friday I was taking the recycling down to the dumpster and my ring got caught on the bag handle as I tossed it over the side.  I heard my ring bounce around in the metal dumpster and I leaned over to stare into the abyss of recyclables.  No ring in sight and I was too short to really dig around and find it.

Deep breaths.  Deep breaths.  It’s just a thing.  You can move on.

Turns out I couldn’t.  So when my husband got home I pleaded with him for help.  And help me he did.  Thankfully the dumpster wasn’t that full and it was mostly paper and cardboard.  He climbed in shoved one box and a bag or two to the side and there was my ring.  Totally bent out of shape on the bottom of the dumpster.

So in climbed my husband.  And he got my ring.  I washed it and bent it back into a circle and put it back on my finger.  Right where it belongs.

My husband’s a pretty awesome guy, isn’t he?

Thursday my schedule was a little crazy and I ended up going to meetings and running errands in this outfit.  I think I probably looked a bit out of place in REI in a blouse and pencil skirt!

On the plus side, it allowed me to get these photos!   Taken with my iPhone,  no less.

Of course, it’s pretty difficult to get a bad photo when you have such a gorgeous day.

As I was sitting in a meeting this morning I looked around and realized everyone in the room was wearing black, brown, or some other neutral color.  The most exciting it got was the green sweater one of the people leading the meeting had on.

Color can be so fun and it doesn’t have to be over the top.  Take this look, for example.  Black and white paired with a pop of pink.  Isn’t that more fun than just another plain black and white outfit?

Of course, neutrals have their place, too. Neutrals can look very sophisticated.  But for those days when you can have a little fun?  Why not punch it up a notch?
