What to wear to the dog park

Casual Clothes

Speaking of my furry partner in crime, this past weekend we had perfect dog park weather. Well, perfect for spring, anyway. Perfect for Chewie would mean it was warm enough for the kiddie pool and the hose to be out. That boy loves him some water.

Anyway, we took the opportunity to take some weekend casual dog park trip photos.

Key components of a dog park outfit?

  1. A jacket with pockets so you can carry extra bags, keys, phone, and maybe a tennis ball.
  2. A shirt that’s easily washable. You will get fur on you.
  3. Jeans. You will get slobbered.
  4. Shoes that you don’t mind if they get a paw print or two on them. You will get stepped on.

You also get to see me in fill-on weekend mode. Meaning, you get to see me with my hair up. I rarely wear my hair up except on weekends. I’m still working on perfecting the messy topknot. My Type A personality has some issues with it.

Strangely, dog slobber and fur don’t bother me nearly as much. Which is why I think I need this t-shirt in my life. Seriously. I don’t think it could be any more accurate.

Chewie, however, was dying to go play, as you can probably see from the photos. And by “play” I mean try to get some dogs to chase him and then give up and stand next to us until we ask him if he wants to go home. He gets along great with other dogs but is also more than happy to be at home. Just don’t ask to come into our apartment without a LOT of warning. He won’t be too thrilled with that.

First, I have to say thank you for all the wonderful comments on yesterday’s post. It’s interesting; on Tuesday night I attended my first Idea Potluck and was blown away and inspired by everyone who spoke. It was just what I needed to remind myself that sometimes you just need to put yourself out there and ask and you will be happily surprised at what the universe gives you in return. So, thank you, everyone, for reminding me that being who I am is perfectly fine.

Even if who I am is a gal trying to take pictures outside her parents’ house, which happens to be situated in the windiest part of all of Central Illinois.

Anyway, today is apparently St. Patrick’s Day although Chicago celebrated last weekend. I avoided the crowds downtown and still got to see the green river on my walk to work on Monday morning.  I also figured that since you’re supposed to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day I’d share this outfit with a greenish vest. It’s close enough, right?

I mean, even though my name is Erin (which basically means Ireland), the closest I’ve ever come to Ireland is an Irish pub. Even if my dad tells me it’s as authentic as you’re going to get in the States. I also plan to drink a Guinness (Nitro IPA) tonight. So, you know, close.

Have you voted for your favorite outfit of November yet?

Recently AJ of AJ Wears Clothes asked if any of us style bloggers with puppies would be interested in modeling her husband’s new line of Fur & Collar tees. Of course I jumped at the chance. A fun graphic tee that professes my love for my pup? Yeah, I think I can handle that.

Additionally, it gave me the perfect opportunity to use the tee to recreate an outfit I’d saved from AJ’s blog!

Fur & Collar has shirts for all kinds of specific dog breeds, including Frenchies, Corgis, and Labs to name a few. And if you order by tomorrow (December 8th) you’re guaranteed to get it before Christmas. Perfect for the dog lover in your life, right? Plus, 50% of the total profits from the sales of the Rescue tee that I’m wearing will go to a charity or organization that helps with the rescue or adoption of dogs and cats.

Chewie is a rescue and we’re told he’s a German Shepherd and an Australian Cattle Dog mix. Not sure how accurate that is, though. We adopted him when he was 8 months old and he’s currently just over two years. People still think he’s a puppy, though, because of his ears and his long legs.

Chewie is very, very protective and it takes him a long time to feel comfortable in new spaces or with new people. And, sadly, he tends to display his discomfort by being aggressive. I originally wanted a chill dog that we could take to patios or on trips but, alas, we got this furface. My track record when adopting dogs isn’t the best but we always love them anyway. And other than his anxiety issues, Chewie is a pretty awesome dog. He goes for 10 mile runs with me, loves to play with other dogs at the park, doesn’t bark at random things while inside our apartment, has never destroyed anything of consequence and learns things pretty quickly. If only he didn’t hate people…

There was another dog walking by when were taking these photos outside the new Google offices. Chewie was very interested since he loves other dogs…as long as they don’t bark or lunge at him.

The Hunt For Brown October

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

For at least a year I’ve seen women wearing brown flats. They’re all pretty similar and pretty basic. But, look, a casual brown flat is something I don’t have and something I find myself wishing I could reach for all the time.

For example, I saw this outfit on Pinterest and knew I had all the pieces to recreate it…except for brown shoes. So, instead, leopard to the rescue!

IMG_9077

Still, I’m on the lookout for brown flats. I ordered these from Zappos but when they arrived I noticed several things:

  1. They came up MUCH higher on my foot at the toes than I like. The vamp, I believe it’s called, covered up my tattoo and just looked really dowdy. However, if you don’t like “toe cleavage” then you might like the rise.
  2. The color wasn’t uniform. It was mottled and lighter in spots and darker in others.
  3. The heel still slipped even though it fit fine in the width at the toe.

So, back they went! I’ve now got these on order. My red MIA flats have lasted me for over 10 years at this point so I think if these fit they should last me awhile. If they don’t work, though, I think my next try will be these. Although, I have a Zappos gift card so I’d prefer to order from there. Suggestions are welcome!

P.S. These are probably the last photos on my rooftop for awhile. Apparently they are closing it to repair our building’s roof. Sad face for me but I suppose a happy face for the people who are tired of leaks.

Then and Now [Vol. 9]

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer · Then and Now

First, let me say that I’m LOVING the conversations we’re having over on my post about how working out can change your wardrobe options. I actually tried a new fitness class at Orangetheory Fitness on Friday and the instructor commented on my back muscle definition. And I felt really strong for most of the dumbbell and bodyweight exercise portion class. But then there was the running at a 12% incline on the treadmill at the end. Oof. Should have chosen to do the treadmill first!

Anyway, today I’ve got a “Then and Now” post for you with jeans, gray shoes, and my olive utility vest.

Here’s the “Now”.

IMG_8130IMG_8131I was originally planning on copying this outfit but, as I mentioned in my post on Friday, a lot of my clothes are too big. Including the white vest I bought last November and still haven’t worn!! I’m almost of a mind to get it altered even though I’m sure it would cost an arm and a leg. I mean, I lusted after that stupid thing and it still has the tags on it!

So, since the original plan didn’t work out, I tossed on this vest at the last minute and then realized this outfit was super close to one I wore last fall.

Hysterically, I even took the photo in almost the same spot and in almost the exact same pose. Also, you can see how much my Chewie puppy has grown since last September!

Anyway, I love how a vest can add just a little extra something and that this vest still fits! It may not be my originally planned outfit but I still feel pretty good in it.

Casual clothes hoarding

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

Last night I was at an event and introducing myself to people and handing out my blog business card. One of the women asked me what my “go-to” store is for work clothes. I told her that it used to be The Limited but now that I don’t have to wear business or business casual I struggle with what to wear and where to shop.

Although, occasionally, I still find things at The Limited that fit my current work dress code. Or lack thereof.

IMG_1477

Jacket – Langford Market (similar) | Tee- Target (same) | Pants – The Limited (same) | Shoes – Bucketfeet (same)

Seriously, though. I’ve been at my current job for just over a year and I still have no idea how to dress! I have an entire closet full of clothes that either don’t fit, don’t fit with my current work environment, or just don’t seem to be “me” right now. Yet, I don’t necessarily want to get rid of all of them because I might need them in the future.

It’s funny because at work I try to convince people that it’s okay to delete old documents. But for myself I struggle with purging clothes. And emails. But that’s another story.

I told myself when I started this job that I wasn’t going to succumb to dressing like a slob. But, I admit, there are days when it’s just jeans and a t-shirt. Which, in reality, isn’t that much different from this outfit. But this outfit isn’t jeans.

In my latest Le Tote box that is on its way to me I’m getting two dresses. I hope they both fit. I also just ordered this dress in red as a causal dress – an item I don’t own very many of. Maybe that’s the answer for summer: casual dresses.

Or maybe not. Maybe I’m still a work in progress when it comes to how to dress casually.

Button Ups as Cover Ups

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

I didn’t really mean to post two very similar outfits back to back, but as I mentioned last week, I’ve really been getting into wearing a button up shirt over a tee instead of wearing a cardigan. So, here’s another outfit with a button up as a cardigan alternative.

June 2, 2015 + June 3, 2015 - 7 of 7I don’t really have much to say about this outfit other than that it was comfortable and I wish I could find these exact shoes online. I get so many compliments on them. If you recall, I bought them as emergency shoes when a pair I was wearing got caught in a revolving door. I don’t wear them that often because the wedge is relatively high for me. But, they were handy when I put on this outfit and instead of wearing my strappy wedge sandals two days in a row I decided to wear these instead.

I’m a bit weird in that I don’t like wearing the same shoes two days in a row. I like to give my feet a break. Varying up the heel height, straps, and where they hit on my foot is one of the things I think helps keep my feet from hurting.

Also, strangely, since I’ve lost 10 pounds and cut back on running I’ve gone down half (sometimes a full) shoe size so not all of my shoes fit. What a problem to have, right?

Feelings of Deja Vu

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

I know, I know, I just did a Then and Now post. But today’s outfit IS really similar to one I wore back in December. Just, you know, updated for spring!

And, if we’re being honest, I basically wore a version of this outfit all weekend. On Saturday I wore these jeans, a graphic tee, and a chambray shirt open over the top. Plus boots because it was raining.

On Sunday I wore these jeans, the chambray shirt, a different scarf, and these shoes. And my gray puffer vest.

And here we are today. That’s the nice thing about weekends. You don’t see the same people you work with so no one has to know how many days in a row you wore essentially the same outfit.

Except those of you that I saw this weekend and who are now reading this post. But you won’t tell, right?

utility-vest-chambray-shirt-2And, yes, if you’re keeping track I did indeed cheat on the Top 10 Remix over the weekend. So sue me.

Last week we had a few more days when winter decided it wasn’t done with us yet. I decided that was possibly my last chance to bust out my faux fur vest. I’d been wanting to wear it with my olive green shirt and leopard wedges ever since I pinned a similar look from Christine at The View from 5 ft. 2 (who I have actually met in person when she lived in Chicago).

olive-shirt-fur-vest-3When I walked into my boss’s office wearing this vest he exclaimed, “Nice jacket!” Considering my boss wears dress pants and a polo shirt 4 out of 5 days (and on the fifth he wears jeans and a polo) I wouldn’t say he’s the paragon of fashion. But, ever since I told him I needed to leave early to get my photo taken for Crain’s I think he’s been keeping an eye on my outfits.

But let’s talk about this necklace for a minute. I have a very similar one from The Limited but I’ve had this one from Rocksbox for a week or two and I want to wear it all the time. I don’t even know why! In fact, I might just decided to replace my one from The Limited with it.

olive-shirt-fur-vest-2Interesting side note: I wore this shirt (and that similar necklace!) on my very first day at my current job and featured Chewie in that post, too. Crazy to see how much we’ve both changed in that seemingly short amount of time! I never thought I’d be wearing jeans as much as I do and I never thought Chewie would get as big as he has!

Post-Christmas Greens

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday

I hope everyone is enjoying the end of their year! This is the first time in six years that I haven’t had the week between Christmas and New Year’s off and trying to fit in all the things I  used to do during that time is….interesting. I was so spoiled!

Anyway, I had a great time celebrating Christmas with my family and thankfully my stomach bug cleared up so I was able to eat whatever I wanted. Which is why I was grateful for this incredibly comfy sweater.

olive-vest-gray-sweater-1Vest – Old Navy (swapped with Jen) (similar) | Sweater – Old Navy (same) | Jeans – American Eagle Outfitters (same) | Booties – Sam Edelman c/o Shopbop (same) | Scarf – gift (similar)

I bought this sweater on a whim at Old Navy one day and hadn’t really worn it much. But when I layered it over a white tank top I never wanted to take it off.

This outfit isn’t particularly ground-breaking or anything but it’s a good example of my casual style. Also, I’ve really been into vests this winter. And sweaters. But, I mean, winter in Illinois means sweaters.

It also means gifts. How’s that for a segue? I’m hoping to get my usual budget/gift post up this week (I know. You’ll just die without it.) but remember that previously mentioned no time off work? Yeah.

Maybe I’ll put it up on New Year’s Day when no one’s reading anyway 🙂
