Kimono Regret

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

There are a few things in my life that I regret not doing. One is buying an amazing blue and black pony print cowboy hat. Another is not taking a job in an archive in southern Illinois. And one is not keeping this kimono from Le Tote.

I mean, I COULD have them re-send this to me in my next Tote, but I put Le Tote on hold every few months to try and save some money. Right now I’m “on hold” and it seems silly to pay the $49 to have them send me a tote just to pay more money to buy this. Right?

Also, I fully admit that I could buy a kimono from Belle on the Roe (I mean, I actually already have).

Regardless, there have been several times in the past few weeks where I’ve wanted to reach for this kimono only to remember I already sent it back to Le Tote. What to do??

Deck Party Time

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

When we moved from an 8th floor apartment in the hottest neighborhood in the city to a two floor apartment in a house in a neighborhood no one has heard of, I admit I was a little heartbroken.

IMG_7322

But, of course, we moved in January and nothing is fun in the winter in Chicago. However, as spring and summer approach, I’ve been enjoying our back deck and making plans for making our yard and outdoor spaces into a true extension of the house.

I ordered two of these chairs from Target (in teal, not white, though) and plan to get a rug, some ottomans, and some cafe lights for our back deck. Combine that with the two tables we already have that I’m planning to spray paint and we’re going to have an awesome little outdoor room!

By the way, all the outdoor stuff at Target is on sale until Sunday!

I’ve also got plans to plant some more flowers in the flower beds and in the pots I brought over from our previous apartment balcony.

And if you want to enjoy my outdoor space with me, I’m having a get together on Saturday, June 24th!

Yes, I will have a Stella & Dot stylist there, but it’s really just an excuse to finally have people over to our house! Consider it a girls-only housewarming party with no pressure to shop. If you want to come, let me know and I send you the info via email!

I don’t usually have parties because I feel like a loser when no one comes. So, uh, help me feel like less of a loser? I promise to be a good hostess AND you’ll get to sit in my awesome new chairs.

Going a Little Loco [SIA Post]

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring · Style Imitating Art

Last week I was invited to attend a launch party for Captain Morgan’s new Loconut coconut liquor at a trendy Hawaiian restaurant called Mahalo. We had an AMAZING weather day and we were able to party on the rooftop. In Chicago. In April. Yes, I was in love with the weather, the drinks, and the company. Jason came with me! But, no pictures of him. Instead, he played photographer.

I knew I wanted to wear something fun and colorful and figured this was also a good chance to wear my Style Imitating Art outfit for this week. The pattern of this top works perfectly with Jen’s SIA choice.

KoreanPatchworkCloth

I’ve actually worn this top with white bottoms before. At my previous job I wore it with white flared leg dress pants and strappy wedge sandals.

Personally, I like this new outfit so much more. I guess I’ve embraced the casual life. And, in the interest of full disclosure, I wore my nude flats around the office. See? Casual life.

IMG_8370

Also, the launch party was super fun. Being a blogger and having an Instagram account in Chicago definitely has its perks. Like getting to enjoy a normally packed rooftop bar with free drinks on a random Tuesday night.

Speaking of Tuesday’s, don’t forget to visit Librarian for Life and Style on Tuesday to see the SIA round-up!

SIA: Tempest in a Hat

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

I think I must still be in a food coma because I’m struggling with writing something interesting today. We celebrated Thanksgiving with my family and then Jason’s family so there was a bit of travel and a lot of food!

On Thanksgiving proper we were at my parents and, although I had a different outfit originally planned, I ended  up in my favorite black jeans and this cobalt blue top. And, true to form, it was only after I had it on that I realized it worked perfectly for this week’s Style Imitating Art choice.

And of course I had to borrow a hat from my mom since she had the perfect one sitting in her closet, unworn!

I also didn’t do any Black Friday shopping, although that’s not unusual for me. I think last year I bought a purse but that was it. This year? Nothing as of yet. And I’m totally okay with that. Instead, on Friday we went for a 3.5 mile walk, drank margaritas, and played Sequence.

img_3173

Saturday we drove to Indianapolis to visit Jason’s family where I got in a 12 mile run before spending the rest of the day with them.

Now it’s back to the grind for a few weeks before I take a short vacation to Santa Fe, New Mexico and then celebrate Christmas!

All Moonfish, All the Time [Giveaway!]

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday · Shopping

Remember my post about how I finally found leggings that I would actually wear out in public thanks to Moonfish? Well, I finally  made it to a Moonfish pop-up shop and, let me tell you, they have so many other cute things and Sarah, the woman behind Moonfish, does a GREAT job of picking out items for you to try on that you probably wouldn’t have picked yourself but, once you have them on, you can’t imagine taking them off.

For example, the entire outfit I wore literally the day after I went shopping at the pop-up at Beermiscuous.

These jeans, you guys, These jeans. I want to wear them every single day. They are the best fitting pair of denim I currently own. Finally! Jeans that fit my waist AND my thighs. And they were around $100 which, yes, is more than Old Navy but for something I can wear all the time now? Yes, I want many, many more pairs.

Which is why I will be doing my best to attend the next Moonfish pop-up at the end of November.

Earrings make the outfit

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

There’s nothing too spectacular about this outfit. I’m not even wearing a necklace. My face is shiny (real life, yo) and the lighting doesn’t show off the fun gold polka dots on my shirt.

But, I wore this outfit last week to get my eyebrows waxed (again, real life) and my stylist could not stop gushing about my earrings. So, I suppose they were really the stars of the show. Literally.

I think I may just keep these from Le Tote. I’ve worn them at least three other times and I’m still trying to build my collection of gold jewelry.

Other things to note:

  1. I got at least three compliments on these shoes. But, I bought them back in December 2012 so they are clearly not available anymore. And, I can’t find anything really similar but I did link some cute pointy-toed flats with gold studs. Side note: when people compliment me on something I’m wearing I never know whether to tell them about my blog or not. Would that be weird?
  2.  Speaking of going to my stylist, I went last week and got my hair colored. Like, really colored. I posted photos on Instagram. I love it and it reminds me of the time I got it dyed this color in high school. That was still my favorite hair color of all time so I’m clearly pretty excited about this.  Now I just need to learn how to curl it….

Layered Surprise

Casual Friday

In case you missed the Internet on Monday, there was a crazy moon thing on Sunday. A lunar eclipse/bloodmoon to be exact. Jason and I went out to Chicago’s Adler planetarium and he rented a fancy lens to take photos of the moon over the lake.

And there were clouds. And we almost went home. But then the layers of clouds passed and we were treated to a perfect view.

lunar_eclipse_2015

When you’re going to be out near the lake in Chicago, even in the summer, it makes sense to also dress in layers. You just never know when a cool breeze is going to blow in.

IMG_9662

But, when you take off the layers you want something of interest to stick around.
IMG_9668

Which is where my brand new necklace comes into the equation!

I was at the Randolph Street Market on Friday evening and Saturday morning as part of the Editors and Designers Choice for Charity and I saw this awesome booth that was displaying all her jewelry and scarfs on white t-shirts. I thought it was such a great idea that I gave her my award for Best Booth. And then bought this necklace because I couldn’t stop thinking about it!

I promptly wore the necklace two days in a row. Yes, it’s a little Mr. T but, you know, I don’t really care. It makes for a great layered surprise.

Good Moon Rising

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

Growing up, my bedroom (after a black and white phase) was entirely decorated in a sun, moon, and star motif.  My Christmas tree has a sun, moon, and star ornament theme. My ring that I wear on my right index finger is a crescent moon with a star. My very first tattoo is a crescent moon ringed with stars. For years I wore a pair of silver star earrings in the second holes in my ears.

So, clearly, I have a thing for suns, moons , and stars. Which is why I was super excited to find this necklace in my latest Le Tote.

IMG_2151

Dainty, layered necklaces are all the rage right now and with this one having one of my favorite shapes it might just stay when I send back the rest of this Le Tote box. So far, actually, I think this is my favorite Le Tote shipment. I really like that now they let you swap out some items for others and yet you can still get a few surprises. (Another plug for code ERIN25 so you can try it for 50% off!)

I almost wore an oatmeal colored cardigan instead of this white blazer but, in the end, I’m glad I went with the blazer. Some days I just don’t want the structure a blazer has, but this one is actually pretty comfortable. And, if I’m being honest, it looks better than the cardigan would have. Blazers really take outfits up a notch,  especially when the rest of the outfit is jeans, flats, and a tank top. And a fun moon necklace, of course.

Another version of pink and polka dots

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring · Style Imitating Art

This week it was Jen’s turn to pick a Style Imitating Art painting to inspire us and she chose a painting called “The Knitting Lesson” full of patterns and colors.

I went with pink and polka dots because, apparently, I really like that combination.

pink-blazer-polka-dot-shirt-1Blazer – The Limited (similar) | Shirt – Gap (similar) |Jeans – The Limited (similar) | Necklace – JF&A Show (similar) | Shoes – Bandolino (similar)

pink-blazer-polka-dot-shirt-3I also thought I’d break up the monotony of skinny jeans and wear my bootcut pair that makes my legs look a mile long. I think the wider bottom balances out the heavier blazer as well.

And, yes, technically my shirt is navy but since we can’t seem to photograph navy (or, get a picture in focus, really), you’ll just have to take my word for it.

This is an outfit I would have worn on casual Friday at my old office but I still wore it to my current office with no problems. Yes, wearing heels is a little more dressed up than most people, but sometimes a gal just wants to wear pants that make her feel tall and fabulous. And if that means wearing heels, so be it.

Let’s all go to the races

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring · Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

Last weekend I was fortunate enough to be able to spend a wonderful day at Arlington Race Track courtesy of America’s Best Racing. Our host, Mike, was the perfect gentleman who took his time to not only tell us all about Arlington (did you know it’s probably the most modern race track in America?) but also teach us how to read the program, the stats, and give us some tips on betting. Oh, and we got to see the horses up close.

kate-spade-rent-the-runway-2

But first, our suite. We had our own room that overlooked the track, a wonderful buffet of food, our own bartender, and our own betting machine. The only criteria? Follow the dress code! No jeans, shorts, or t-shirts and no “abbreviated clothing.” I had to ask Mike what that meant and basically the answer was nothing you wouldn’t wear to dinner to meet your significant other’s parents. Hat are optional, by the way, but if you aren’t lucky enough to have a suite you’ll want one to keep off the sun. arlington-race-track-1

I invited my parents, my brother and his girlfriend, and Valerie and her husband to join us. None of us had been to Arlington before and all of us were in awe at how beautiful and elegant it is.

kate-spade-rent-the-runway-3

arlington-race-track-2

Mike took us down to the paddock to see the thoroughbreds up close and then we got to watch the horses race right next to the track! Oh, and my favorite part of the day, feeding a horse mints!

arlington-race-track-3

I rented this Kate Spade dress from Rent the Runway and it was perfect for our day at the track. I also rented a pearl necklace but it was too overwhelming on my frame so I went with one I already owned.

kate-spade-rent-the-runway-1

I didn’t win any money overall but I was having fun betting. And that’s saying a lot because I don’t like to gamble! I don’t think I would ever try to make any money at horse racing but it was fun to play for a day. And Arlington itself is so beautiful that just going there makes you feel like a princess.

kate-spade-rent-the-runway-4

Thanks again to Mike and America’s Best Racing for showing us an amazing time at Arlington. Last weekend was the closing weekend of the season but I have a feeling that I’ll be back next summer. Hopefully I’ll remember everything I learned about horse racing!
