Things I’ve worn 100 times

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall · Shopping

Don’t forget to enter the Moonfish giveaway!

I have this habit of wearing something 100 times right after I buy it because it’s foremost on my mind. Currently it’s either these flats or, since it’s gotten colder, these boots.

I enjoy buying shoes from Shopbop because they carry my two favorite brands: Sam Edelman and STEVEN. They even restocked my favorite Sam Edelman riding boots.

These jeans are also my favorite black jeans I’ve ever bought. Highly, highly recommended.

And, guess what? It’s all on sale, just in time for holiday shopping for yourself or someone else.

Sale ends 11:59 PM Pacific on Monday, 11/28

Last year during this sale I bought my leather cross-body tote bag. This year? I haven’t decided yet. I’m debating either another pair of the Sam Edelman flats because they are SUPER comfortable. Or maybe a pair of Sperry duck boots. Or maybe I’ll be generous and buy some Christmas gifts. Anything you want me to pick up for you?

Basics aren’t bad

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

In a fit of absolute lack of imagination and total basic-ness, I wore a very simple outfit to work on Monday. And then I photographed it. Because, I guess, that’s the whole point of this blog, right? I’m not aspirational. I’m…realistic? Anyway, here’s what I wore:

img_1728

Cardigan – The Limited (similar) | Jeans – Old Navy (similar) | Shirt – Le Tote (same) | Boots – Sam Edelman c/o Shopbop (same) | Scarf – c/o Moonfish

This scarf is one of the ones Sarah from Moonfish gave me. It’s so soft and the colors are so rich. I’m actually glad it’s scarf weather again so I can wear it.

Speaking of Moonfish, their next pop-up shop is November 10th-13th at Beermiscuous. Shopping and beer? Yes, please. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make their last pop-up but I’m really hoping to make this one. Why? Because the scarves Sarah gave me when we met hang on the back of my kitchen chairs so I can throw them on on the way out of the door. And the leggings are getting worn way more than I thought. So clearly Sarah knows how to pick good stuff!

img_1715

So, if you’re in Chicago and want to join me for some beer and some shopping, let me know! Or, if you’re free this evening, the 26th, I’m hosting an event at the main Shoe Drop retail location and 353 N Clark Street from 6-8PM. Free drinks, apps and shoe shines! These riding boots are going to get some love, let me tell you. Yes, women need to get our shoes shined, too. And I’m totally going to take advantage.

Booties and a Maxi Dress

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall · Shopping

I received this dress in my latest Le Tote and I LOVED it. Super comfy, interesting pattern, and I figured it would work well for late summer and early fall.

The only downside? I didn’t have the perfect shoes to wear with it for fall. I tried these gray booties but I wasn’t so sure about the outcome.

Even though the dress has gray in it, I wanted to wear it with brown/tan booties. However, I don’t have any! I have my cheetah wedges but I wasn’t feeling the pattern mixing.

img_1505

Thankfully, though, Shopbop is having a sale and I’ve got my eye on a few pairs!

The sale ends at midnight Pacific Time on Wednesday, October 14th. So, you can bet I’ll be walking on over to my computer ASAP today to order a pair (or two!) of booties. I’ve linked to my favorites at the bottom of this post.

One last thing before I go

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

As I ran through my neighborhood last evening I noticed that so many of the restaurants still have their outdoor seating up. We hang onto summer for as long as possible here in Chicago!

So, in that spirit, here’s an outfit I wore last month before summer officially ended.

img_0971

Crazy how just one thing, a necklace, can take a simple outfit up a notch, right?

For fall, though, I’d probably just add a cardigan (maybe in cobalt blue?) or wear a black sweater and black ballet flats. Too bad I already sent this necklace back to Le Tote!

I’m waiting just a bit longer to bust out my riding boots, though. I have this weird self-imposed limit where I won’t wear them until the high for the day is under 60 degrees. For now I’m wearing flats, occasionally booties, and sneakers. I have a feeling the boots will be coming out soon, however.

SIA: Colors and Patterns

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

When it’s my turn to pick a piece for the Style Imitating Art challenge I swear I don’t pick pieces that work with photos I’ve taken and haven’t posted. It just seems to work out that way sometimes!

For example, take this week’s challenge. I picked a Detroit street art piece that has a ton of color and pattern to it. And guess what? I have an outfit photo saved that includes a top full of color and pattern!

img_8728

Top – Le Tote (same) | Jeans – 3×1 c/o Shopbop (similar) | Shoes – Sam Edelman c/o Shopbop (same)

I kept this top from one of my recent Le Tote orders because I loved the versatility of the colors and I actually have very little in the way of patterns in my closet. It’s perfect for warm weather and can easily be worn under a cardigan this fall.

Or, you know, when acting silly on the golf course behind your parents’ house. Harassing birds. As you do.

img_8672

img_8660

This outfit might not have any street art in it, but I think it still embodies the playfulness of the piece I picked for this week.

If this week’s art inspired you to come up with a fun outfit don’t forget to email me a picture to looplooks@gmail.com before 8PM central time tonight! Then come back for the round-up tomorrow. I’m excited to share all of the outfits.

Lace and Bows

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

When I first put this top on when it came from Le Tote I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. I originally had it on with my gray jeans but it was just “eh”.

Now, though, I think it might be my gray jeans that are “eh” because once I put the top on with dark denim I liked it much better!

img_1030

Top – Le Tote (same) | Jeans – American Eagle Outfitters (same) | Shoes – J. Crew Factory (similar)

It’s cut kind of like a sweatshirt so it’s a tad bit boxy. Maybe not the most figure flattering, but, again, that’s why I like Le Tote. I can try stuff and send it back. I did indeed wear this outfit to work. And when I did I also discovered that these shoes are cracking at the edges. Actually, several pairs of my shoes are doing that. Ugh! Time to Shoe Drop, I guess!

img_0987

When taking these pictures I was on the hunt for somewhere NOT windy. Thankfully we found this little hidden area on the campus across the street from our apartment building. It also allowed me to act goofy.

Sometimes my favorite photos are when I’m doing something silly.

Favorite Outfit of August

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

Let’s take a minute and talk about summer. And August. And how I barely posted any outfits in August! Which should make choosing your favorite pretty easy, right? Anyway, I wasn’t really posting outfits because I was keeping pretty busy and when I’m busy it actually means less time for photos.

I had a lot of fun in August, though! Here’s a sampling of what I was up to.

So, of course, now we move on to the voting portion of today’s post. Only four options to pick from and, to be honest, I loved all of them. Although, I think I felt the sassiest in the black peplum top and striped skirt.

But I’m really more interested in your opinion. Which is your favorite? Vote below!

SIA: Great Wave of an Outfit

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer · Style Imitating Art

Well, look at that everyone. It’s Tuesday and it’s September! But you know what, I’m still wearing my summer clothes. Take that, fall! Okay, to be honest, I do have some scarves from Moonfish Mama that I’m dying to wear, but they’ll just have to wait a few more weeks.

In the meantime, let’s take a look at what I wore for this week’s Style Imitating ArtThe Great Wave.

I know the painting doesn’t have any bright pink in it, but something about this dress just seemed appropriate. Whether it was the pattern that echoes the wave spray, the blue that I tried to bring out more with the earrings, the ivory background, or the pleats on the front of the dress, it just worked for me.

Actually, I really liked this dress in general. It reminds me of my little black dress that I wear all the time in the summer. I’m debating keeping this one from Le Tote because it’s just so easy to wear! However, summer IS coming to an end so I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to wear it this year.

IMG_0775

I have, however, already worn it twice since I’ve had it. Once to work and once to get boozy sno-cones. I’m slowly trying to get Chewie accustomed to outdoor patios so that we can take him more places in the summer. So far we’ve been to two and he’s done remarkably well! My little boy is growing up! He’ll be three next month, by the way.

Anyway, don’t forget to head over to 14 Shades of Grey to see how other people interpreted this painting!

Save your favorite shoes with Shoe Drop

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I was meeting to chat with one of the men who started Shoe Drop and I asked you all if you had any questions for me. I was surprised that several of you mentioned that you hadn’t even realized you could get shoes repaired! To be honest, being able to get shoes repaired is one of my favorite parts of living in a big city. I’m hard on my shoes. Because I walk at least half a mile every day as part of my commute they get scuffed, the heels get caught in sidewalk cracks and tear or gouge, and the heel tips of my high heels get worn down.

Since I’ve lived in Chicago I’ve gotten several pairs of shoes repaired but it was always a chore. Finding a place that got good reviews that was also convenient, trying to communicate with the guy behind the counter, not having any idea how much I was going to get charged, getting my shoes back with masking tape stuck inside that I couldn’t remove without leaving a sticky residue.

The outfit I wore to visit Shoe Drop

Top – The Limited (similar) | Skirt – Le Tote (same) | Shoes – Vince Camuto (similar

Overall, while it certainly extended the life of my shoes, it wasn’t always the most pleasant experience.

Enter Shoe Drop. Started by Duncan and Brandon, two self-described shoe lovers, Shoe Drop aims to bring shoe repair into the 21st century. Shoe Drop started with 40 Shoe Drop-specific drop off locations and 110 Pressbox partner locations around Chicago. One of which is in my apartment building! I’d used Shoe Drop before and didn’t even realize it! Anyway, create an account in their app, drop off your shoes at a designated drop off location, fill out the form in the app, and you’re done! They come pick up your shoes, repair them, charge your credit card, and then return your shoes in about 5 days to where you dropped them off. And they text you when they’re ready!

IMG_8591

In June of this year they opened their first physical location at 353 N Clark Street where you can not only talk to a cobbler and drop off shoes for repair, you can also get them shined. I wanted to know what happens if I show up with my blush pink leather flats and Duncan told me that was no problem. They have hundreds of colors of polish or they can even shine them with a clear polish that helps hide scuff marks.

Shoe-Drop 8

If you do drop your shoes off with them they go to a 4000 square foot facility near the United Center where their team of cobblers work on them. Duncan said that the people in the shoe repair business in Chicago love being able to just fix shoes and not have to worry about running a business. It’s a win-win!

My other personal favorite is that they have a price list and only take credit card (and no need to tip!)

I left my favorite black heeled sandals with them when I visited. They needed new heel tips, a shine, and the heel coverings repaired. When I got them back I swear they looked better than the day I bought them! Plus, they were returned to me in a bag that I can use to drop off more shoes!

IMG_8623

Shoe repair might be a little pricey for some people but if you have a pair of shoes you love I say go for it. It sure beats trying to find a replacement pair!

valentino_beforeAFTER

Shoe Drop’s goal is to open more physical locations where you can stop in for a shine or just drop off all your shoes for repair at once. In the meantime, if you’re in Chicago, check out their locations map and then head on out to bring your sad shoes back to life!

P.S. I’m working with them to put together an event that would offer FREE (or discounted) shoe shines and repairs. Stay tuned!

So nice I wore it twice

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

I actually wore this outfit a few weeks ago, but instead of wearing it with my gold sandals I wore it with my blush flats (seen here). Those silly flats. I keep thinking I should replace them since I bought them YEARS ago from Target and the toes are all scuffed up and I don’t know how to polish colored shoes. And then I don’t because otherwise they’re in good shape. In fact, they’re in better shape than some of my more expensive shoes.

IMG_6409

Top – Le Tote (same) | Jeans – AG (similar) | Shoes – Sam Edelman c/o Shopbop (same)

Actually, I think I’ll be asking that question of the Shoe Drop people on Friday. How the heck do you polish shoes that aren’t black or brown?

I also wore this top and sandals with white shorts last Thursday to get dinner and drinks during Nellcote’s pizza and a beer happy hour. Sadly, their happy hour special no longer includes just any beer on the menu. It’s now just pizza and a Modelo Especial for $10. It’s still a good deal, though. And Modelo Especial is a nice summer beer. Although, apparently not all the bartenders got the message since the guy next to us ordered the happy hour special and the bartender let him pick any beer he wanted. As someone who trains people as part of my day job I find situations like that to be an interesting case study in how different places cascade (or not) information.

Nellcote also has a doggy happy hour from 3-5pm on Saturday and Sunday that I really want to try and take Chewie to at some point. Although, as you can see from the picture below, Chewie’s idea of happy hour is being left alone to eat the flora in the planters at the park.
