Tell me: could this outfit get any more girly? Pink pencil skirt, lace top, pearls and a bow? Seriously? Yet, somehow, I think because of the silhouette it falls more on the preppy side than the frilly, girly side. Actually, if I’m wrong please don’t tell me.
Anyway, there are lots of ways you can wear lace and not look girly. I bet you can find some of them at today’s Trend Spin Link-Up
since the theme is lace.
Also, if you think a pink pencil skirt looks too girly, well, let me prove you wrong with 8 other ways to wear it! Audrey challenged us
to take one piece and show you many ways to wear it. I originally was going to use my lace dress but I thought the pink pencil skirt would be more relatable.
So, there you have it. A pink pencil skirt paired with everything from lace to animal print to chambray. Which look is your favorite?
This outfit is also a great way to wear simple pieces such as cropped pants and a short sleeved shirt without looking like a schlub. A textured tee with tailored pants always brings an outfit up a notch.
Although, I suppose that bright green pants do not really call to mind a calm evening. But, these pants have been in the dry cleaner pile all summer so I knew I wanted to wear them before all our summer evenings are gone!
And, yes, this short-sleeved lace top is new. It’s another one of my Fashion Outlets of Chicago
purchases. I’d been looking for a short-sleeved lace top to replace my long-sleeved one
that’s too small for me. This one from the Banana Republic Outlet was exactly what I wanted.
I am TIRED this morning, y’all. So, so tired. Which is why I’m ever so thankful I already had this outfit picked out for Inspiration Monday. Now, jeans and a band shirt
aren’t exactly office-appropriate so I went with the idea of blue pants and a printed top instead. And since I’m not a hat girl I brought in a bit of the manliness of the fedora with my white blazer.
Also, flats. So thankful for flats today. See, I rode 65 miles on my bike yesterday and for much of that I was riding faster than I normally ride. Today my legs are destroyed. And while I love the feeling I get after a hard workout, I also want to take it a bit easy the next day. Which means nice, comfy, flat shoes.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go find some caffeine to keep me awake through my three meetings this Monday.
2. It’s the last day to vote for me for the Expert Shopper
contest over at Chippmunk. Remember you can vote again even if you’ve already voted! I think
I’m in the top 5 but I’d really love to solidify my spot so I can win the gift card and show you how to make the most of your money at The Limited. Maybe I’ll even buy a little something for a giveaway. What do you think?
Now, on to why I’m wearing lace pants with a button up shirt and my nude studded bow flats.
So, today’s Trend Spin
theme is bows. Other than my tie neck top, I’m pretty sure I don’t own any clothing with bows. However, I DO own shoes with bows on them. Such as these nude flats. Bam. Bows.
As for the color scheme in today’s outfit? That was inspired by series that my friend Jen from Librarian for Life & Style
has been participating in for awhile from 14 Shades of Gray called Style Imitating Art. Each week she posts a painting that you can use to inspire your outfit. It’s such a unique spin on the typical outfit inspiration idea that I decided it would be fun to participate. And this week’s painting is “Woman of Substance” by Mexican artist Octavio Ocampo.
I immediately thought of my lace pants with the creams and tans and decided to pair it with my green button up shirt and gold jewelry. I’ve actually never worn this shirt with anything other than a black pencil skirt and I’m still not sure how I feel about it with these pants. But I wouldn’t have put the two things together on my own if it wasn’t for using this painting as an inspiration. And this is why I love using images that already exist to get ideas!
What do you think of the idea of using a painting as an outfit inspiration?

Well, you’d think it would be easy to come back to work after a four day weekend when I already had my outfit all planned out thanks to Two Birds and their Inspiration Monday. White top? Check. Blue patterned pants? check. Nude sandals? Check. Arm party? Check and check.
Yet, somehow, I managed to forget to put on my engagement ring (I remembered my wedding ring, though. But since it’s a wrap ring it looks kind of silly by itself) AND earrings. Seriously. Waking up was super hard after an awesome weekend that included a four mile race, a rooftop BBQ and fireworks watching, planting flowers on our balcony, a 20 mile bike ride, Zumba in the park, a trip to the Taste of Lakeview, and FINALLY checking out the local Goodwill.
Needless to say, I made the most of my weekend and my body wanted it to keep going.
On the plus side, I bought some new curl cream
this weekend and this morning it kept my hair curly without making it crunchy. Score!
You all know how much I love my navy lace pants, so when I saw these white lace pants on final sale at The Limited for $19 I couldn’t pass them up. I’d been wanting a more streamlined pair of white pants anyway and the lace was just the cutest touch. Today I kept it neutral and paired them with all gold (and a little bit of leopard because why not?) but I have a feeling these pants will go with just about everything in my closet.
In the elevator of my apartment building on my way to work this morning a woman got on with some ADORABLE puppies including one very exuberant Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (or some mix thereof) who desperately wanted me to pet him. “No, not on the white pants!” his owner cried as he leapt up, putting his front paws on my shin. Thankfully his paws were clean and I used it as an excuse to squat down for puppy cuddles.
You’d think white lace pants and dogs wouldn’t go well together but I’m here to tell you that when we had dogs I had to be just as careful when wearing black pants. White might be a dirt magnet but black is a fur magnet like no other!
I’m still recovering from my crazy two day, 195-mile, 12 person relay race which means I completely forgot my camera this AM. And my photographer is studying for finals (yay for being married to a college student!) so we didn’t take pictures in advance. But, thankfully, you don’t have to be left with this sorry photo collage of what I’m wearing today. Nope, you can head over to the other Chicago Erin at Color Me Styled
and read my guest post on what I’m planning to pack for vacation
So, uh, Chicago. In June. It’s a fickle time of year. The sun is out and warm but the air temperature is cool. So even if I wanted to wear a dress as summery as the one in today’s Inspiration Monday
to work it was not going to happen today.
But that’s okay. Because that means I got to wear my new skirt (details coming on Wednesday)!
After feeling like I was all pencil skirts all the time I’ve been looking to branch out. The key, though, is making sure that the skirt isn’t too full or too long lest I feel like a ballerina or like it’s accentuating my hips. This one was an online purchase that worked out in my favor. I’m already looking forward to other ways to wear this skirt.
Although, I realized when putting this outfit together that I don’t own any brightly colored heels! I think I will be using my Sole Society
credit to remedy this situation. What color do you think I should get?
After a weekend of go-go-go that caused me to pass out in bed on Sunday afternoon for an epic nap I decided to take Monday off from the blog. I was already off work so there was no real reason to get dressed up. Planting flowers on our balcony and doing ALL THE LAUNDRY didn’t really warrant the adorable red, white and blue Memorial Day outfit that Two Birds
chose for Inspiration Monday.
This week I’ve been feeling rather uninspired. Then I remembered I hadn’t worn these navy lace pants since November
and knew I wanted to wear them this week! But then I couldn’t figure out what to wear with them. Purple cardigan? Okay. Lighter purple shirt? Okay. Oh! Purple bubble necklace! Got it!
Still, I think my husband had to take about 100 photos of this outfit to get two that I liked. Not sure if it was the outfit, my (lack of) posing skills, or the angle of where he was standing, but it just wasn’t happening for me.
So these are the two I liked the best. And even then I don’t love them. But, I do love the purple paired with the navy. Such a fun color combination! I’m also hoping to wear these pants a bit more this spring since I bought them right at the tail end of cropped pants season last year. What colors would you like to see with them?
