Sole Society Review: Maddy Riding Boots

Sole Society Maddy Riding Boots

A few weeks ago I asked for your opinions on Facebook about which riding boots I should order from Sole Society.  The almost unanimous opinion was that I should order these, the Maddy riding boots.

So, I did.

Review of Sole Society Maddy Riding Boots

Here’s what you should  know about the Maddy riding boots:

  • They are made of real leather. Since I don’t have any qualms with wearing real leather I prefer, when possible, to buy riding boots made from it because I feel that they last longer.
  • The entire back of the boot is stretchy material which is great for those of us with athletic calves
  • Based on a size 6 the calf circumference is 14”. I ordered a size 8 so the calf circumference was closer to 15.25”.
  • They come in all full and half sizes between size 5 and 10 and then only full in 10 and 11.
  • They don’t have a full inside zipper. It’s only up half the inside which I was a bit concerned about it but it didn’t end up making a difference.

When I first put them on I thought they were too bulky around the ankle. But that was on bare legs. When I put them on with my jeans they looked much better. And considering I mostly wear my riding boots with jeans I think they’d be fine. Plus, it can be difficult for me with my 15” calves to find riding boots that fit comfortably over my jeans and these did that just fine.

I also tend to shy away from boots that have straps around the ankle but with these the strap sits lower on the front of the shoe making it less likely to cut off your leg, visually, which I liked.

However, I ended up returning them. Why? Because the size 8 I ordered was too big in the heel.

I’m in a weird gray zone between a size 7.5 and an 8. The front of my foot is an 8 but my heel is a 7.5.

Sole Society doesn’t currently do exchanges so I’ll just have to hope that after they process my return they still have a 7.5 in stock that I can order to try. Otherwise I’ll be using my store credit to try another pair.

Yeah, that’s the other thing about Sole Society. They charged a $7.95 restocking fee if you ask for a refund instead of store credit.

Still, I really liked the elastic back and the leather was nice and smooth. I do worry that they might start to get slouchy around the ankles but hopefully the elastic on the back would help with that.

So, there’s my review of the Sole Society Maddy Riding Boots. Hopefully the 7.5 will work better for me because otherwise I really liked them!

A Little Peek of Gold

First things first: yes, I got my hair cut. And it’s about half an inch shorter than I like. But that means that in a few weeks it will be the perfect length. Thank goodness my hair grows quickly. Until then I’ll just have to be hyper-vigilant about wedge-shaped hair. Although, it looks positively flapper-esque when I wear my winter hat.

Secondly, yes, I am doing the Take One, Pass It On Challenge today. I actually had a completely different outfit planned but at the last minute decided that I also wanted to participate in Bri’s Third Thursday theme of animal print with a new outfit. So what did I pass on? The gold shell I had on with my red, gold, and brown outfit! See it peeking out underneath my sweater?

This shell is quite long on me and I’ve always worn it tucked in. But after seeing a few sweaters at Target that had bottom hems embellished with a different material such as this one and this one I thought this would be the perfect top to wear underneath a sweater. Turns out, it works pretty well! And it adds a little extra visual interest to what might otherwise be a much simpler outfit.

Snake in the Pink

First, I have to give a shout-out to Valerie of The Style Files for giving me the idea to wear this snakeskin print top with my pink skirt. I needed something to wear for this week’s Trend Spin Link Up of brights and I’m pretty sure this skirt is the brightest thing I own. But I also needed to wear the brown boots I had on yesterday for the Take One, Pass It On Challenge. So, I went with brown and pink. It’s a fun combination, yes?

Two ways to wear brown knee high heeled boots

These two outfits show you that wearing knee high boots under pants is a great way to get two uses out of one pair of shoes. Plus, in the winter the extra height of the boots gives you some extra warmth on your legs, too! So, don’t think that just because you have knee high boots you can only wear them skirts or over skinny jeans. Wear them under your dress pants, too!

Oh, and speaking of this bright pink skirt, while searching for a similar one to which to link, I realized that Jones New York was having a 40% off everything sale. I love the color of this skirt but it’s always been a little irritating. It’s not lined which makes it difficult to wear over tights and it’s gotten a bit too tight recently. So, I ordered a new pink skirt. I’ve never bought anything from Jones New York before, though, so we’ll see how it fits! Hopefully better than my current one so I can wear bright pink more often.

P.S.  In the interest of full disclosure, I did NOT wear this to work today. I put this outfit together and took photos before I looked at my calendar for the week (or checked the weather). I am, however, wearing this snakeskin print top with a black suit to a professional organization meeting. You’ll see that outfit on Thursday. Which is probably when I’ll actually wear this skirt outfit.

I know I just said that the polka dots on this top are navy and not black but here I am wearing the top with black jeans. Why? Because this tweed jacket has both blue AND black in it (not to mention both silver and gold threads) so it’s totally okay that I’m wearing navy and black together.

Also, are you really surprised that I chose this shirt for the Take One, Pass It On challenge?

It’s Friday and that means JEANS! So of course I had to find a way to wear something from yesterday with jeans.

Anyway, I don’t have much to say today. Except that last night I went to an AWESOME workout session and I’ll be writing about it on my fitness blog next week. If you don’t already, you can follow me over there or like Eri-thon on Facebook.

And stay tuned next week to see what items from my closet I remix into new outfits!

So, this week’s Trend Spin is Jewel Tones. I admit, I had to Google which colors were considered jewel tones. Turns out, there’s not really a consensus. I suppose technically they are colors that resemble gemstones, such as emerald, dark red, purple, and dark blue. The opposite of a jewel tone would be a pastel or lighter version of the darker colors.

I tend to gravitate toward jewel tones but strangely I was having a difficult time coming up with an outfit today. See, I also wanted to participate in Sarah’s Take One, Pass It On challenge 2.0. I did this in February as well and it was a good exercise in remixing items in my closet. However, since I didn’t wear any jewel tones yesterday I decided to take the boots and pass them on to today!

So, which item will I pass on from today’s outfit? Guess you’ll have to keep reading to find out!

Chicago Blogger Clothing Swap

First, have you voted for your favorite outfit from October yet? I always add the winners to my Pinterest boards.

Now, on to this Chicago blogger clothing swap thing. Last month I attended a clothing swap hosted by the lovely Lindsay from The Garden Apt and the dress pictured above was one of my scores! New with tags on it and everything. Lindsay not only provided her apartment space, but she also treated us to homemade baked goods and some lovely refreshments. And thanks to the other attendees there were lots of swap items to choose from.

In attendance we had Lindsay, myself, Nicole of Cedar & Rush, Kit from The Kittchen, Lauren of Chi Gal Lauren, Ashley of Hop, Skip, Jump to the Midwest  and Laurie from 312 Beauty.

Lindsay asked each of us to bring at least 10 items that would be appropriate for fall. At first I didn’t know if I’d be able to come up with 10 items but then I looked at what  I had listed on Poshmark and decided that I would bring some of those items in addition to a few that, although adorable, didn’t really fit me the way I wanted.

clothing_swap_collageJust a sample

Why did I decide that instead of trying to sell those items I would bring them to the swap? Because anything that didn’t end up getting a new home from one of my fellow bloggers got donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Chicago. And, really, donating items that I only would have made a few bucks off of is a better use of my closet space.

But, what you’re really asking I know is, what else came home with me from the swap? Well, you’ve already seen my bracelet and if you followed my outfit photos on Instagram or Facebook last week you also saw the other two items!

The black and white striped cardigan and the black, white, and gray silk tank top! Funnily enough, both came to Las Vegas with me and were perfect for the trip.

Lindsay’s goal is to turn this into a regular event and continue to donate our non-swapped items to charities around the city. I applaud her ingenuity and her drive to make it happen and I’m already looking forward to the next one!

Thanks to Lindsay and Lauren for photos of the swap!

It’s officially fall so I suppose that means it’s okay to break out the boots! I typically try to wait until the highs are in the 60s before I take my boots out of the closet for fall. Don’t want to rush the end of summer, right? Or maybe that’s just me. Because I don’t drink coffee I can’t get on the style blogger fall bandwagon and have a pumpkin spice latte in my hand (unless it’s a pumpkin spice chai latte from Argo Tea) and I don’t want to wear boots before it’s time.

Blogger fail?

Also, I could NOT come up with an outfit that involved pants for today’s Inspiration Monday photo.

Click the photo to see full sized

Olivia Wilde is beautiful and apparently has a really long torso. I do not have a really long torso. So while I contemplated black pants with my white studded leopard print shirt I knew it wouldn’t look nearly as good on me as it does on her. So, instead I went with the black, white and red color theme in her shirt. And boots. Because it’s fall. And I don’t want to fail at ALL the style blogger stereotypes.

Little Red Pants

Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

Sweater – Gap (similar) | Shirt – J. Crew (similar) | Pants – Gap (similar) | Boots – Bandolino via 6pm.com (similar) | Bracelet – gift (similar)

When I saw Laura wear her cropped red pants with boots and a sweater I knew I wanted to recreate the outfit with items in my own closet.  Sadly, after I put it on and took pictures I realized that marathon training (and my subsequent desire to EAT ALL THE THINGS) has not been kind to me.  Plus, it’s been awhile since I wore these pants and now they’re a little too tight in certain areas.  I ended up swapping out the crewneck sweater for a long oatmeal colored cardigan so I would feel less exposed.

But the point of this post is not to talk about pants that are a tad too small.  Nope, it’s to talk about the many ways I’ve worn these pants since “Pants” are the topic of the second day of 5 Days, 5 Ways.  Actually, this post is kind of a cop-out because I did a past post showing 9 different ways I’ve worn these red pants!

Still, other than a quickie photo from last year’s trip to New York City this is the first time I’ve showcased these pants for cold weather wear.  See, if your cropped pants are narrow enough at the ankle you can wear them all year round by putting boots over them!  Pretty neat, huh?

Want your own cropped red pants?  Here are a few that might fit the bill!

Lace Dress Take Two

Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

Turtleneck – The Limited (similar) | Lace dress as a skirt – Marshall’s (similar) | Boots – Cole Haan (similar) | Belt – Target | Necklace – Groopdealz (similar) | Earrings – Bauble Bar (similar)

Last week I wore this lace dress as a skirt for the first time and wasn’t too sure how I felt about that outfit. But I didn’t give up!  No! Lace is very on-trend right now (I even saw an adorable eyelet lace dress at Old Navy yesterday) and I really wanted this sleeveless dress to work for colder weather. So, taking your advice from last week to add some black on top to balance out the black on bottom and using this and this as inspiration, I topped my lace dress with my black turtleneck, my leopard belt, and my black mini-bubble necklace.

Yes,  I know, it’s technically spring.  But the weather in Chicago didn’t get the memo and it’s still freaking cold here.  So a turtleneck is totally appropriate.

Although, to be honest, I’m not actually at work today!  But if I was, this is what I’d be wearing.  So what am I doing instead? I’m on my way to Cleveland, Ohio to visit my best friend from college! I’m sure much hijinks will ensue.  Well, at least as many hijinks as you can get up to when you’re in your mid-30s and one of you has a kid.

No, I don’t know who Joe is.

Another Inspiration Monday is upon us and another inspiration photo that didn’t work with today’s plans of presenting to a graduate school class about the field of records management (trust me, it’s a scorcher!).  So I took the idea of a dress with boots and went with that.

I also wanted to link-up with Kimmie at Blue Paper Lanterns and her “Oh, This Old Thing” link-up.  Can you guess what the oldest item in my closet is?  I’m wearing it in this outfit.

black-dress-purple-shirt 1

It’s the purple collared shirt!  I’ve had this shirt since high school, which means it’s at least 15 years old.  My dad gave it to me as a gift with a gray sweater.  The sweater is long gone but this shirt keeps on trucking.

What’s the oldest item in your closet?

Also, have you taken the first anniversary reader survey yet?  Results announced soon!
