Sometimes you can go home again

Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

Over the weekend Jason and I went back to our hometown so that he could work on his car and I could make my first pie with my mom. Salted caramel apple, if you must know. And it turned out amazing. Anyway, on Saturday night we went out to dinner and, as we walked through downtown Champaign, Illinois, we walked right past the Thai restaurant where Jason and I went when we were first dating back in high school.

We started reminiscing about going on some of our first dates there, wondering if the owner would still recognize us. She used to know Jason by name since he went there so often. It’s why he took me there. In fact, it’s the first place I ever ate Thai food. Pad Thai, of course. And it’s now who I compare all other Pad Thai to. Jason and I even had our picture taken there for a newspaper article about “young love”.

I haven’t changed a bit! Except my hair color. I think this was a reddish blonde phase?

Anyway, we decided that on our way out of town on Sunday we’d stop by for lunch. We could tell from looking in the windows that NOTHING had changed. Not the seat covers. Not the decor. Not the signage. Nothing. We even saw the owner through the window!

So, we went in for lunch. And when Jason walked up to the owner she exclaimed, “JASON?” Yep. And the food was as amazing as ever. And we sat in the booth in the back of that newspaper photo. We didn’t even look at the menu. We always get the same thing, even here in Chicago. But nothing we’ve found in Chicago is as good.

So, “they” might say you can never go home again, but in this case that just isn’t true. We did go home. And it was amazing.

P.S. This might be outfit deja vu, too, for you. Because I’ve worn a variation of it before.

The most expensive shoes I’ve ever bought

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

So, for this month’s Third Thursday Threads with Bri from Work Clothes, I Suppose we’re supposed to write about our most cherished item. The one we coveted, saved up for, will repair before we donate/toss. You get the picture.

Whenever anyone asks me this, I always answer with my black Cole Haan boots. Why? Because they were what I consider to be my first “adult” purchase. See, after I graduated college I moved back to my hometown, got a job, and eventually worked part time and went to graduate school part time. Heck, Jason and I even bought a house! But where I worked wasn’t exactly “professional” dress and I was always running up and down stairs, hauling boxes, or kneeling on the floor. Not to mention lugging around boxes of historical documents and ledgers from the late 1800s. Dusty, dirty work. I wore mostly clothes from the Junior’s department and very rarely wore heels.

But I had a pair of black kitten heel faux leather knee high boots that I loved. And when they finally fell apart I wanted to replace them. Shortly after we moved to Chicago I found myself at one of the major malls in the Chicago suburbs looking for a new pair of boots. And I found the perfect ones. Except they were at Cole Haan and cost more than I’d ever spent on anything.

colehaanblackkittenheelboots

That was 8 years ago. I didn’t save up for them like I should have but I bought them and I’ve wore the heck out of them. I’ve gotten the heel tips replaced several times and even though the pointy toe is a bit dated and I’m back in a job where I rarely wear heels, they’ll always have a place in my closet. In fact, I just wore them again on my birthday with black jeggings, a hot pink sweater, and a black blazer.

This particular style, of course, is no longer sold. The closest thing Cole Haan has right now is these.  And these ones are similar but MUCH cheaper.

What about you? What is that “one” item in your closet? Linking up with Bri’s Third Thursday Threads

SIA: Sunrise at Sunset

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter · Style Imitating Art

This past weekend Jason and I went up to Lake Geneva so I could run a 5 mile race and party with Valerie and friends.

IMG_3312

I know this photo is out of focus, but I think it looks kind of artsy, right? Anyway, I ran a great race and then we danced for like four hours (the race started at 2:30 pm). When you’re in your mid-30s there aren’t a lot of chances to drink beer and dance, you know?

Sadly, I did not win the dance competition (although I know who did….) but I had a really fun time regardless.

Anyway, when we got home on Sunday afternoon I wanted to snap a quick photo of the outfit I’m wearing today as inspired by Jen’s Style Imitating Art pick. The painting she picked is called “Sunrise” but we grabbed these photos at sunset.

In my year-in-review of outfits, Jen commented that this top stuck out to her. I think it’s because it’s clearly the perfect thing in my closet to wear for this painting inspiration! However, I do tend to wear it in very similar ways every time.

Evidence? Here you go:

P.S. Can we talk about my quads/hamstrings in that center photo? I mean, I know I’ve been working on them but, dang. I think it’s probably those that got me to my fastest 5 miles ever on Saturday. Seriously, guys, weight lifting has made me such a better runner it’s crazy.

It’s my birthday and I’ll dress up if I want to

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter · Style Imitating Art

Yep, it’s true. Today is my 35th birthday. I don’t mind saying my age because no one believes me anyway. And you can find it on all my race results anyway so there’s no reason to hide.

This outfit is way dressy for my current job but would have been totally perfect for my previous position. And for as comfy as jeans are, I do miss the opportunity to dress up. So today I am. So there. And so what if it’s super cold out? I miss dresses and skirts. I might have to layer two pairs of tights but I’m doing it anyway. I mean, if I wore a skirt on one of the coldest days of the year last year I think I can wear one this week.

I don’t have any fancy plans for my birthday. Apparently this makes my friends sad. But, you know, having a birthday so soon after Christmas makes it difficult to plan unless you get it done way in advance. So, we’re going out for drinks on Thursday. Jason is taking me out to dinner on Tuesday. And tonight? Tonight I have my first swim lesson to help me get ready for the two triathlons I signed up for this summer.

Starting my 35th year off with a bang. And a dress.

Sweatshirts at Work

Casual Clothes

You may remember that back in August I purchased a gray leopard print sweatshirt from Stitch Fix. In my previous job this would have probably been a weekend-only top, although it’s so comfy that I’m pretty sure I would have found a way to wear it to the office. Regardless, it’s perfect for my current job so to work it got worn.

gray-leopard-sweatshirt-2I kept the outfit really simple this time around but am already envisioning pairing this sweatshirt with red pants, black jeans, or even a black pencil skirt. Although, I also think leopard can be a neutral so who knows what else I’ll end up putting with it!

Gray Dress and Black Boots

After a beautiful weekend our winter weather seems to be back for another round. Hence the layers, tights, and boots. That’s okay, though, because in the past when I’ve worn this dress I’ve mentioned wanting to wear it with my knee high boots. And although I’ve worn it with my ankle boots this really is the first time I’ve worn it with my tall boots. And I really like it!

Anyway, speaking of the nice weather, how did I spend my weekend? Well, after running my last long run (!!) of this current half marathon training cycle I showed up at the PAWS Chicago warehouse to help sort donations. Almost four hours later I’d sorted so much dog food, cat food, toys, leashes, and beds I was amazed at how much people donate. The volunteer coordinator, though, said that as fast as the food comes in it goes back out through the pet food pantry.

At least I had some cute helpers?

Also, when Jason was taking my pictures in this outfit he mentioned that I didn’t seem to be very excited to be having my picture taken. “Do something interesting,” he said.

Okay.

5 Ways to Make the Most of Your Dresses

For those of you who thought I purchased new legs when I did my January Shopping Summary you’ll be pleased to know I’m wearing them in this outfit. Well, I’m wearing the nude fishnet tights from Express, anyway.

I’m also wearing this dress that hasn’t gotten much love recently. My husband actually asked me, “Hey, what happened to that long-sleeved polka dot dress? You haven’t worn it in awhile.” I guess this dress made an impression on him!

He’s right, though. I hadn’t worn it in awhile. Dresses can sometimes be difficult to wear more than one way. Although, there are some ways you can keep them from feeling stale. In fact, here are five ideas for making the most of the dresses in your closet.

5 Ways to Make the Most of Your Dresses

As you can see, for this outfit I went with option 5 and layered my navy J. Crew blazer over the dress. I like the air of professionalism it gives to this particular dress. Not all the options above will work for every dress so be sure to pay attention to whether or not the dress has sleeves, the dress’s neckline, the length, and how it fits overall. All of that plays a role when choosing how to make the most of your dresses!

That Monday Morning Cat

Wow. Okay. So, it’s Monday. And, just like Garfield, Mondays and mornings are very difficult for me. I had an amazingly fun weekend but it basically left me with no time to prep anything for this week. Including taking any blog photos. So these were snapped on my way out the door by my husband who wasn’t fully awake either and had the settings on our camera all wrong. Oh well.

Anyway, this outfit was inspired by the latest Style Imitating Art choice by Salazar, “Louison and Raminou” by Suzanne Valadon:

I couldn’t pose with a cat since I’m terribly allergic to them. Also, as we know, I don’t own anything orange. So, here’s my ode to the painting. A green sweater and my leopard print skirt. That’s close enough to an orange kitty, right?

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, yes, I did commute to work via train in the sub-zero temps this morning. I wore a pair of yoga pants over my tights along with my snow boots. And, of course, my down coat, scarf, gloves and hat. Sigh. Some day I’ll be able to leave the house without taking 15 minutes to add extra layers, right?

In fact, here are two outfits featuring today’s sweater and skirt that did not require the addition of 6 other pieces of clothing.

It’s in My (White) Jeans

You guys! I’ve been waiting all week for this outfit. No, not just because jeans means it’s Casual Friday. No. It’s because I LOVE this outfit!! This was one of those weeks when I took all my outfit photos on Sunday (and, yes, I do wear every single outfit that you see) but I put this outfit together at the last minute. I’m still doing the no black in January challenge and I wanted something different than regular blue jeans. So, white jeans in winter it is!

The last time I wore these white jeans after Labor Day you guys loved them. So I hope you love today’s look just as much. The collared shirt was a last minute addition and I think it adds just a bit more sophistication as well. It’s also sleeveless chiffon which makes it the perfect layering piece. Less bulk and no sleeves to roll up.

Basically, I think this outfit just really screams my style. A little something edgy and trendy paired with something a little classic and structured.

Wearing Brown with Black

A coworker recently told me there’s no way he would wear brown and black together. Which is too bad. Because it’s totally okay now. Although, to be honest, I probably would have paired black boots with this outfit instead of of my dark brown boots if it hadn’t been for today’s Inspiration Monday photo.

Brown, tan and black all being worn together. Cats and dogs living together! Mass hysteria! Okay, not really. But I know pairing brown and black (just like pairing navy and black) and be a bit of a dividing line with some people. Obviously I don’t mind.

Where do you fall on the brown with black issue?
