SIA: Tempest in a Hat

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

I think I must still be in a food coma because I’m struggling with writing something interesting today. We celebrated Thanksgiving with my family and then Jason’s family so there was a bit of travel and a lot of food!

On Thanksgiving proper we were at my parents and, although I had a different outfit originally planned, I ended  up in my favorite black jeans and this cobalt blue top. And, true to form, it was only after I had it on that I realized it worked perfectly for this week’s Style Imitating Art choice.

And of course I had to borrow a hat from my mom since she had the perfect one sitting in her closet, unworn!

I also didn’t do any Black Friday shopping, although that’s not unusual for me. I think last year I bought a purse but that was it. This year? Nothing as of yet. And I’m totally okay with that. Instead, on Friday we went for a 3.5 mile walk, drank margaritas, and played Sequence.

Saturday we drove to Indianapolis to visit Jason’s family where I got in a 12 mile run before spending the rest of the day with them.

Now it’s back to the grind for a few weeks before I take a short vacation to Santa Fe, New Mexico and then celebrate Christmas!

SIA: Le Chien Noir

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer · Style Imitating Art

Remember last week when I said that this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge was going to feature Chewie? Well, I thought it would be fun to do a little comparison from 8 month old Chewie to almost 3 year old Chewie.

Clearly he’s all ears and legs. I couldn’t quite get him to make the same face as the cat in this week’s art, though.

I went with black and tan with a little pop of red in my accessories. And in Chewie’s collar, of course.

I wore this outfit to lunch at a nearby restaurant that was donating proceeds to One Tail at a Time. Chewie came with us, too, and behaved himself quite well! A couple sitting across from us even commented on how well behaved he was. Hahah, don’t we have them all fooled?

I wish that I could be like the cool kids

Casual Clothes

Don’t forget to vote. It’s what all the cool kids are doing.

My husband was out of town all day Saturday so I had this grand vision: I would take my laptop to the coolest coffee shop in what is arguably the coolest neighborhood in Chicago. I would get an Instagramable coffee and doughnut and set up my laptop and work.

Hahaha, yeah. I am not that cool.

The coffee shop was crazy busy. They were out of doughnuts. So, I got my coffee to go and instead went and bought running shoes and came home and worked on my couch.

On Sunday I wanted a re-do. I convinced Jason to walk to the coffee shop with me to get a doughnut AND bring the camera so we could take pictures by the awesome street art outside the place where all the cool kids hang out.

Of course, Jason went to take the picture only to find out we’d left the camera battery at home. iPhone to the rescue!

And, sadly, they were out of doughnuts. Again.

So we went across the street to Bombobar.

But, seriously, you guys. I feel like I’m the nerdiest, least cool fashion blogger in Chicago. And, in the interest of full disclosure, sometimes I’m okay with that and other times I’m not.

And sometimes I just want a doughnut and a cup of coffee and a cool picture so I can pretend I’m cooler than I really am.

P.S. While we’re being honest, I suppose I should say I wore this outfit two days in a row and hadn’t washed my hair when we took these photos.  Yay for weekends!

Hot and Misty

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

So, for some reason my comment notification emails are no longer showing up in my inbox. I’m not sure what’s up with that and I hope you guys are still getting my responses. Because I do try to respond to every comment I get! Even if today they are about how leggings are not pants.

Or maybe your comments will be about how my smile looks a little crazed. I took these pictures on Sunday and it was HOT and I just wanted to be done. I was sweating like crazy. But this outfit is actually perfect for my office and the weather today. Mainly because these are pants, not leggings. I swear! And the weather has cooled off substantially so wearing a scarf in July isn’t totally odd.

Although, just typing that seems odd. I swear, am I the only person who checks the weather a hundred times before deciding what to wear? You just never know in Chicago!

For example, like I said, on Sunday when I took these photos it was ridiculously warm outside and people were pressing the mist button on this sculpture at the park like crazy. Yes, this sculpture has a mist function. It’s super fun and I’d actually never seen it in action until Sunday.

See it in the background? And see the guy staring at it? That was basically everyone’s reaction. So, if you ever come to Chicago and want to see the misting sculpture, let me know. I’ll hook you up.

A Sea of Green

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer · Style Imitating Art

Normally I do these Style Imitating Art posts on Monday but yesterday I was talking about all the changes I’ve got going on in my life (as well as a giveaway).

Which means that today I’m showing you how I interpreted Jen’s choice of art for this week: a serigraph from her own collection titled “Sea” by Richard Schallert.

https://librarianforlifestyle.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/week12_jen_schallert.jpg

I was immediately drawn to the greens in the print and thought it was the perfect chance to wear my green pants.

By the way, it was REALLY windy when I took these photos so I added my new hat. I picked this up for $30 at the Taste of Randolph on Saturday night. Said hat purchase may have been brought on by the two sangrias I drank but it was still a good impulse purchase.

I can’t really explain the brown shoes, though. After I saw these pictures I immediately changed into my black heeled sandals. I was trying to bring out some of the browns and tans in the print but I think these just look too clunky.

Didn’t stop me from having fun while taking the photos, though!

Five Summer Hats That Aren’t Baseball Caps

Casual Clothes · You Pick Wednesday

summer_hats_2013

1/2/3/4/5

When I asked on Facebook for questions my fans wanted answered, one of my readers (and long-time friend) asked:

I’m tired of wearing baseball caps out (unless I’m running) but still want to keep the sun out of my face…. Just please don’t say “fedoras,” I’d feel like a poser.

So, in response, I picked 5 summer hats from Target (because, really, who doesn’t love Target).  One “cowboy” style hat, two floppy hats, one traditional sun hat, and one conductor style hat.

If you’re transitioning from a baseball cap I think the conductor hat is probably the closest match if you don’t feel comfortable jumping right to a floppy hat or a cowboy-style hat. Personally, my summer hat is a purple floppy one that I bought at a boutique in Michigan.

And if you don’t like my hat picks, here are a few more summer hat posts that might inspire you more.
