Midi Skirt Musings

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

This past weekend my friend and neighbor had a party on our building’s rooftop and I was debating on what to wear. Yes, I know, it’s a party. With beer. And barbecued meat. There was no need to dress up. So, although I was originally thinking of wearing a skirt, I went with shorts. And then wore the skirt to work.

And, to be honest, I wasn’t entirely sure how I felt about this skirt. Is it a strange length? Do midi skirts look okay on me? Should I have left the top untucked? Or does it look just fine and I’m a head case?

Actually, it’s probably the latter. I will say, though, that I was originally struggling with what color to wear with it on top. White felt too boring but none of my other tops seemed to work with the temperatures. Then I remembered I had this green camisole buried in my drawer and it was the perfect solution. Toss on the white cardigan for the office and I was good to go.

IMG_8216So, what do you think: is a midi skirt a yay or a nay? What color would you have worn with this?

Awhile ago I got some requests for more casual outfits. Well, to be honest, I am one of those people who tends to wear mostly workout clothes on weekends or, if I’m feeling spunky, I’ll put on jeans, a tank top, and a cardigan. Nothing too crazy.

But, today is a holiday for me and I took this casual outfit a few weeks ago before we left for vacation so I thought I’d share it with you. It’s too casual for my office but it’s perfect for a day I’m not at work.

So, here you go. A casual outfit!

Or, if you’re really just here for the work-appropriate stuff, head over to Basic Training – Corporate Style where I’m being interviewed about my job and my work-wear.

When I saw today’s Pinterest Inspiration photo from H&K Style Journey and crew I immediately thought “Crap! I already wore that outfit!”

But, never one to shy away from mixing up the items in my closet, I broke out the green textured striped sweater and the pink pencil skirt again. Only this time I paired them with my nude heels (and nude fishnet tights), my fancy pearls, and my new denim jacket.

As I mentioned in my February Shopping Summary, I purchased this jacket during a blogger event at Langford Market Diversey for 40% off.  Will I wear it around the office all day? Maybe, maybe not. I do love how it looks with the pearls and the pencil skirt, but sometimes I actually get hot in my office (I know? An office that’s too warm??) so it will probably come off.

It’s okay if I go sans jacket, though. The outfit is cute enough on its own.

And in case you’re wondering, I did indeed wear two jackets today. This denim one and then a heavier one over the top. Chicago isn’t kind enough to let me get away with just a denim jacket. Not yet, anyway.

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. I received compensation from Langford Market in exchange for blogging about the brand.

Not Easy Being Green

So, in addition to still doing the Pinned It and Did It Challenge, there’s also a theme going on this week. Can you guess what it is? No?

Okay, I’ll tell you.

The theme is GREEN! Yep. Green. All of the Pinned It and Did It inspiration outfits this week have some green in them.

For today’s outfit I went pretty literal. Black pants, green blouse, and a tan cardigan. Simple enough, right? Also, standing in front of this giant pile of ugly leftover snow just makes me even happier that on Friday I leave for Puerto Rico! Yes, that’s right. I’m going on vacation!!

Which means that you should enjoy this last week of Pinned It and Did It outfits. Next week I have some other fun stuff lined up for you, including a fun collaboration I did with a local boutique.

Obviously I’m getting excited for my trip if I’m already talking about next week and it’s only Tuesday. I mean, really? Who am I kidding.

Whatever. I’m excited.

Although you wouldn’t know it since the city of Chicago turned into a giant frat party on Saturday, today is actually St. Patrick’s Day. Or at least that’s what I’m told. I’m also told that if you don’t wear green on St. Patrick’s Day you get eaten by snakes. Or pinched. Or something.

Anyway, this is the outfit that H&K Style Journey and her friends chose for us to interpret for the holiday.

It took me a long time to come up with something to wear today that was inspired by this. Our Chicago temperatures are not going to allow for bare legs or short sleeves today so this summery outfit will have to wait.

Instead I decided to layer this dress with a sweater, tights, and a scarf. I don’t think this particular dress has made it to the blog before beyond a quick snapshot from last October. And I don’t think I’ve ever worn it to work. But it layers well and the faux leather accents add some extra visual interest so I have a feeling that it might show up more often now that I can think of more ways to wear it!

Navy Blue Suede Shoes

So, if you follow me on Facebook you know that this weekend I was on the hunt for a pair of navy blue pumps. Why? Because I only owned navy blue heeled sandals (seen here) and that just wasn’t going to work now that I’m wearing navy tights. I suppose I could have worn black shoes but, hey, I’m down for an excuse to fill a hole in my closet.

Which meant off to the stores I went. My new Fitbit (birthday present from my mom) tells me I walked over 5 miles on the hunt for navy heels. I finally located these, which I loved because of the ankle strap, but the DSW I was at didn’t have my size. Thankfully the salesperson was nice enough to locate them for me at another DSW and off I went.

Also while I was out, I picked up this necklace at Express. With a $10 customer reward plus a $15 off my purchase coupon this $35 necklace came to $10 plus tax. SCORE!

All of that because I fell in love with this outfit and wanted to recreate the emerald green and pink combo for today’s Trend Spin Link-Up. But, lest you think I just went shopping so I could recreate the outfit, that’s not entirely true. Both the necklace and the shoes were items I’d had on my wish list for awhile. The outfit was just the impetus to actually purchase them. Well, that and coupons.  The shoes were actually 40% off in the store and I had a $5 birthday coupon there as well.

And the snow? That’s just par for the course around here.

What To Wear With Plaid

I know, I know, I just wore a sweater over a collared shirt last week. But the look is classic for a reason. It even got chosen as this week’s Inspiration Monday photo:

And in a case of getting something new and not wanting to wait to wear it, I received this sweater as part of my latest Stitch Fix order (full post to come on Wednesday) and I immediately wanted to pair it with my brown plaid pants.

Would you believe that for years I thought the only colors I could wear with these pants were brown and cream? The first time I wore them with chambray I was so happy. Now that I’ve got this green sweater I’m thinking of even more colors I can pair with them! Navy? Burgundy? Black? So many ideas!

Also, you may have noticed that I did not take something from Friday’s outfit to pass on to today. Nope. I decided that Monday’s are a reset on the Take One, Pass It On challenge for me. Cheating? Maybe. Do I care? Nope!

Emerald and Cobalt

I know you’ve slept since then, but remember on Tuesday when I wore a green sweater? Well, that’s the piece I chose to “pass on” to today’s outfit as part of the Take One, Pass It On challenge. Admittedly, I struggled with whether or not to wear the emerald green sweater with the cobalt pants and the polka dots because I was afraid it would look too clownish. But in the end I obviously went with the two bright colors and just decided that I would be vibrant today.

I also think this would look good with tan, gray, or navy bottoms. Or, if the polka dots on my top were black instead of navy, black pants or skirt. Or, you know, if you had some, you could wear it with purple bottoms. Or jeans. But since it’s Thursday and not Friday no jeans for me.

But, speaking of jeans, you can probably guess what I’ll be taking from this outfit to wear on Friday, yes?

Jewel Tones and Black Boots

So, this week’s Trend Spin is Jewel Tones. I admit, I had to Google which colors were considered jewel tones. Turns out, there’s not really a consensus. I suppose technically they are colors that resemble gemstones, such as emerald, dark red, purple, and dark blue. The opposite of a jewel tone would be a pastel or lighter version of the darker colors.

I tend to gravitate toward jewel tones but strangely I was having a difficult time coming up with an outfit today. See, I also wanted to participate in Sarah’s Take One, Pass It On challenge 2.0. I did this in February as well and it was a good exercise in remixing items in my closet. However, since I didn’t wear any jewel tones yesterday I decided to take the boots and pass them on to today!

So, which item will I pass on from today’s outfit? Guess you’ll have to keep reading to find out!
