What to Wear to the Chicago Auto Show

Casual Clothes

Last Wednesday Jason had the day off work so I took the day off as well so we could go to the Chicago Auto Show. In the past we’ve gone on the weekends and, let me tell you, it was SO much nicer to go during the week. The Chicago Auto Show is the largest auto show in the United States so I’m sure you can imagine that it gets crowded on the weekends.

Of course, while my husband was photographing all the pretty cars I made him take a few photos of my outfit as well.

When you go to the auto show the key is to park in Lot C (which is underground!) so you can leave your coat in the car. However, even though you’re walking indoors the whole time the parking garage can get chilly. Hence the vest and the scarf.

I got hot partway through the morning so the scarf came off. But when I got chilly again after lunch I just popped the scarf back on and I was fine.

Layers, people. They work.

Also, as we were leaving our apartment Jason looked at my shoes and said “Are those going to be comfortable for walking around?” Let me tell you; these TOMS wedges? Even more comfortable than my sneakers. I know. I walked dogs at PAWS on Sunday morning in sneakers and my legs were killing me!

Anyway, this outfit also does a great job of incorporating many of the elements of the Style Interpreting Art pick that Salazar chose to celebrate Vietnamese New Year. I’ve got green, brown, red, black and the texture of my vest echoes the texture of the fish in the art.

Oh, and I’ve got a new car.

Pinterest Parallels [Vol. 3]

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter · Pinterest Parallels

Back in 2012 when this blog was in its infancy and I had just discovered other fashion blogs and Pinterest I saved this outfit from What I Wore. I remember showing it to my mom and saying that I loved the patterned topper with the dark teal shirt but that I didn’t have anything like it. She pointed out that I didn’t need those exact items. Instead I just needed something black and white patterned to wear with something else that green color.

Fast forward to three years later (almost exactly!) and I found myself putting together this outfit using my herringbone vest, a dark teal sweater and my leopard print TOMS wedges.

herringbone-vest-green-sweater-3I love that I didn’t go out and try to recreate that outfit right away. I was patient and kept it saved for when I ended up with all these pieces in my closet. I acquired them each over time and have worn each of them in several different ways (examples: sweater | vest | necklace | shoes) .

I also love being able to mix and match the pieces in my wardrobe to create so many different looks. One of my goals of this blog (and my closet consultations and You Pick Wednesdays) is helping people to see that they can wear things many different ways. Don’t get stuck in a rut! And don’t rush out and buy all the pieces to recreate an outfit because chances are you’ll find that rut and stick there. Instead, if you see an outfit you love save it and know that it will always be there when you realize, hey, I DO have something similar!

Fall Uniform

Casual Clothes · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

I wore this outfit to work last week (and again yesterday) and while I was in the bathroom washing my hands another woman said to me, “I love your sweater with that shirt and necklace!”

I told her that I would dress like this every day if I could. I mean, I suppose I could but that might get a tad boring for you all. Still, I think this is my fall and winter “uniform”. I just love pairing a blingy necklace with the more traditional sweater and button up shirt.

The navy and the green are great fall colors and go well together without being overly matching. And, of course, the riding boots because I think it’s a rule that women in Chicago wear riding boots in the fall.

Okay, maybe not a rule, but it’s pretty standard. Especially when fall seems to have become winter overnight! I’m pretty sure that if we want to take Chewie to the dog park this week I’m going to have to bust out my snowsuit. Yes, I own a snowsuit. It’s for skiing.

Funny related story: growing up I couldn’t say snowsuit. I always said snowsnoot. To this day I have to think about the correct pronunciation before I say it out loud.

Thank goodness my daily uniform isn’t a snowsuit.

P.S. Due to some construction in our building our photo shoot was interrupted by an upstairs neighbor bringing his dog up the back stairwell. This is the only photo where neither Chewie nor I are making some weird face or pose. And even that is arguable.

Springing Up Green

When I saw today’s Pinterest Inspiration photo from H&K Style Journey and crew I immediately thought “Crap! I already wore that outfit!”

But, never one to shy away from mixing up the items in my closet, I broke out the green textured striped sweater and the pink pencil skirt again. Only this time I paired them with my nude heels (and nude fishnet tights), my fancy pearls, and my new denim jacket.

As I mentioned in my February Shopping Summary, I purchased this jacket during a blogger event at Langford Market Diversey for 40% off.  Will I wear it around the office all day? Maybe, maybe not. I do love how it looks with the pearls and the pencil skirt, but sometimes I actually get hot in my office (I know? An office that’s too warm??) so it will probably come off.

It’s okay if I go sans jacket, though. The outfit is cute enough on its own.

And in case you’re wondering, I did indeed wear two jackets today. This denim one and then a heavier one over the top. Chicago isn’t kind enough to let me get away with just a denim jacket. Not yet, anyway.

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. I received compensation from Langford Market in exchange for blogging about the brand.

That Monday Morning Cat

Wow. Okay. So, it’s Monday. And, just like Garfield, Mondays and mornings are very difficult for me. I had an amazingly fun weekend but it basically left me with no time to prep anything for this week. Including taking any blog photos. So these were snapped on my way out the door by my husband who wasn’t fully awake either and had the settings on our camera all wrong. Oh well.

Anyway, this outfit was inspired by the latest Style Imitating Art choice by Salazar, “Louison and Raminou” by Suzanne Valadon:

I couldn’t pose with a cat since I’m terribly allergic to them. Also, as we know, I don’t own anything orange. So, here’s my ode to the painting. A green sweater and my leopard print skirt. That’s close enough to an orange kitty, right?

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, yes, I did commute to work via train in the sub-zero temps this morning. I wore a pair of yoga pants over my tights along with my snow boots. And, of course, my down coat, scarf, gloves and hat. Sigh. Some day I’ll be able to leave the house without taking 15 minutes to add extra layers, right?

In fact, here are two outfits featuring today’s sweater and skirt that did not require the addition of 6 other pieces of clothing.

Navy Blue Suede Shoes

Chicago style blogger, wear to work, emerald green sweater with navy gingham shirt, pink pencil skirt, navy tights, navy ankle strap heels, pearl bauble necklace

So, if you follow me on Facebook you know that this weekend I was on the hunt for a pair of navy blue pumps. Why? Because I only owned navy blue heeled sandals (seen here) and that just wasn’t going to work now that I’m wearing navy tights. I suppose I could have worn black shoes but, hey, I’m down for an excuse to fill a hole in my closet.

Which meant off to the stores I went. My new Fitbit (birthday present from my mom) tells me I walked over 5 miles on the hunt for navy heels. I finally located these, which I loved because of the ankle strap, but the DSW I was at didn’t have my size. Thankfully the salesperson was nice enough to locate them for me at another DSW and off I went.

Also while I was out, I picked up this necklace at Express. With a $10 customer reward plus a $15 off my purchase coupon this $35 necklace came to $10 plus tax. SCORE!

All of that because I fell in love with this outfit and wanted to recreate the emerald green and pink combo for today’s Trend Spin Link-Up. But, lest you think I just went shopping so I could recreate the outfit, that’s not entirely true. Both the necklace and the shoes were items I’d had on my wish list for awhile. The outfit was just the impetus to actually purchase them. Well, that and coupons.  The shoes were actually 40% off in the store and I had a $5 birthday coupon there as well.

And the snow? That’s just par for the course around here.
