As casual as I get

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

Well, yesterday was my first day at my new job and I’m pretty sure my brains were leaking out of my ears by the end of the day. So much to learn, so many people to meet, and my new boss has so many great ideas. I’m really excited to get settled and do some awesome stuff in the next few months.

When my husband saw me before work he said, “I thought the dress code was casual?”

“This is as casual as I get!”

Seriously, though, I was definitely overdressed for the most part. Jeans, shorts, flip-flops: I saw it all.

This means I might be working jeans into my wardrobe a bit more, but right now I don’t see myself wearing them every day. Especially since I’ll eventually be leading trainings. Definitely a culture adjustment, though!

Also, my days will probably be busy for awhile and I’ve gone from a private office to a cube (which I honestly don’t mind) so I doubt I’ll be doing any lunch hour blogging for awhile, either.

Which, again, means posts might be sporadic. I know you understand, though! Don’t forget, you can always follow Loop Looks on Facebook or Twitter for new post notifications. Or, you know, you can sign up to get emails when a new post goes up. Just fill out that little box on the left!

Ruffles as Art

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer · Style Imitating Art

First, don’t forget to vote for your favorite outfit of May! Will there be an upset like there was for April??

For this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge, Salazar gave us something really unique: pick a paper sculpture by Peter Gentenaar. The instant I saw his sculptures I immediately knew I wanted to wear this cardigan.

I mean, look at this piece. Click on the image for more information:

Swirls and ruffles and colors. They are so beautiful! My outfit doesn’t do them justice but I’m working with what I’ve got. Meaning I took two of my ruffliest pieces and paired them with a white skirt so that the focus would be on the green cardigan and camisole.

Actually, I think this is only the second time either the cardigan or the camisole have made it to the blog! So, thank you Salazar and Peter for the inspiration.

So, in addition to still doing the Pinned It and Did It Challenge, there’s also a theme going on this week. Can you guess what it is? No?

Okay, I’ll tell you.

The theme is GREEN! Yep. Green. All of the Pinned It and Did It inspiration outfits this week have some green in them.

For today’s outfit I went pretty literal. Black pants, green blouse, and a tan cardigan. Simple enough, right? Also, standing in front of this giant pile of ugly leftover snow just makes me even happier that on Friday I leave for Puerto Rico! Yes, that’s right. I’m going on vacation!!

Which means that you should enjoy this last week of Pinned It and Did It outfits. Next week I have some other fun stuff lined up for you, including a fun collaboration I did with a local boutique.

Obviously I’m getting excited for my trip if I’m already talking about next week and it’s only Tuesday. I mean, really? Who am I kidding.

Whatever. I’m excited.

Black and Green

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

For some reason I thought I had this post scheduled for yesterday. Apparently not. So, here it is today.

Good morning, everyone! I’m actually out of the office today because my mother-in-law is visiting (and I’m taking her to trapeze class with me!) but when I saw today’s Inspiration Monday photos I couldn’t NOT post something!

Click the photo to see the full outfit

I immediately thought of my black and green dress that is almost these exact colors. I’ve never posted it on the blog with bare legs and minimal accessories so I was going to wear it today. But, it’s a little dressy for trapeze. Instead, here are four outfits I’ve worn over the past two years that also have the same color scheme.

Outfit 1 | Outfit 2 | Outfit 3 | Outfit 4

As you can probably tell, I like this color combination. And, in fact, the inspiration photo for today has given me ideas for even more black and green combos!

What do you think? Is this a color combination you would wear?

So, I had a totally awesome outfit originally planned for today featuring my new sleeveless vest generously given to me by Holly from the fall CAbi line. Why my new sleeveless vest? Because today’s Inspiration Monday outfit featured one. I was so excited!

And then Chicago remembered it’s summer. And it’s over 80 degrees outside. And if I drove to work and just had to walk a few feet from my car to my office then pants and a sleeveless vest might be okay, But I don’t. I walk 5 minutes to the train, stand outside on the train platform, take the train, then have a 5 to 10 minute walk to my office.  Plus I need to run outdoor errands during lunch. I would be one heck of a sweaty mess if I tried that in my original outfit.

Which means that instead you get green and black as my nod to the Inspiration photo. You also get the same shoes I’ve been wearing non-stop because they are super comfy. Vince Camuto, I think you have a convert.

Before I start talking about all the things that inspired today’s outfit, I have two things to share with you!

1. I’m guest posting at Work Clothes, I Suppose today while Bri is on an Alaskan cruise! The post? How to deal with a vague office dress code. I know more than one of you can relate to this.

2. It’s the last day to vote for me for the Expert Shopper contest over at Chippmunk. Remember you can vote again even if you’ve already voted! I think I’m in the top 5 but I’d really love to solidify my spot so I can win the gift card and show you how to make the most of your money at The Limited. Maybe I’ll even buy a little something for a giveaway. What do you think?

Now, on to why I’m wearing lace pants with a button up shirt and my nude studded bow flats.

So, today’s Trend Spin theme is bows. Other than my tie neck top, I’m pretty sure I don’t own any clothing with bows. However, I DO own shoes with bows on them. Such as these nude flats. Bam. Bows.

As for the color scheme in today’s outfit? That was inspired by series that my friend Jen from Librarian for Life & Style has been participating in for awhile from 14 Shades of Gray called Style Imitating Art. Each week she posts a painting that you can use to inspire your outfit. It’s such a unique spin on the typical outfit inspiration idea that I decided it would be fun to participate. And this week’s painting is “Woman of Substance” by Mexican artist Octavio Ocampo.

I immediately thought of my lace pants with the creams and tans and decided to pair it with my green button up shirt and gold jewelry. I’ve actually never worn this shirt with anything other than a black pencil skirt and I’m still not sure how I feel about it with these pants. But I wouldn’t have put the two things together on my own if it wasn’t for using this painting as an inspiration. And this is why I love using images that already exist to get ideas!

What do you think of the idea of using a painting as an outfit inspiration?

I’m back! Did you miss my smiling face? What about if I bribe you with an awesome giveaway? Yes, I’m giving away a beautiful Gorjana bracelet over at Coming Unstitched. And, hey, you can earn entries for doing what you already do. You know, reading this here blog. Easy, right?

You know what’s not easy? Getting dressed in “real” clothes after spending a week in my swimsuit and not showering until 5 PM every day. Thankfully a gal I saw in Target along with a Pinterest find gave me the idea to pair my emerald green tank with my black and white skirt. Also not easy is getting a good photo when it’s raining outside. Hope you enjoy this slice of my day job office.

I feel like this outfit is a little bit “traditional” but, you know, there’s nothing wrong with that. Adding a colored top to a black and white skirt is sometimes a style revelation for people so even though it may seem simple it’s not always for everyone. And since my goal at Loop Looks is to help people think outside their uniform rut, maybe someone seeing this will have a light bulb moment and copy this look. And that’s perfectly fine by me.

Summer Style and Recovery Monday

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

I’m still recovering from my crazy two day, 195-mile, 12 person relay race which  means I completely forgot my camera this AM. And my photographer is studying for finals (yay for being married to a college student!) so we didn’t take pictures in advance.  But, thankfully, you don’t have to be left with this sorry photo collage of what I’m wearing today. Nope, you can head over to the other Chicago Erin at Color Me Styled and read my guest post on what I’m planning to pack for vacation next week!

Or you can go vote for your favorite outfit from May! So far the chambray shirt with the black pleated skirt is winning. But was that your favorite??

Back tomorrow with (hopefully) our regularly scheduled programming!

What the Leopard Dragged In

I’m dragging this morning.  I had what I’m referring to as a “lost weekend”.  It was fun, don’t me wrong, but partying a bit too hard on Friday night followed by staying up all night on Saturday night (and riding my bike 25 miles) has left me a bit worse for wear this Monday AM.

So, here we are back at my uniform of black pencil skirt and interesting top.  This blouse is a teensy bit peplum so it’s got that going for it.  The necklace is more visually appealing than just the plain silver or pearl one I would normally wear.  And the shoes?  A last minute decision to break up the simplicity of the outfit.

But, really, I think it just goes to show you that even if you’re not feeling 100% you can still look put together.

P.S.  I added all my June looks over on Facebook? Let me know which one is your favorite!

Today I have two different interpretations for you!

Here’s the look we started with:

For my first interpretation I went with the maxi skirt, printed shirt, wedge sandals and denim topper  idea.

oti_wednesday 003

oti_wednesday 010

Before I started this blog and before I started following other fashion blogs I never would have thought to wear a dress as a skirt.  But that’s what I did here and it was a lot of fun!  Sadly, it’s a little too casual for what I had going on at work on Wednesday.

Hence, the other interpretation!

How in the world is this outfit related to the inspiration photo?

Light colored bottoms, pastel family top, neutral shoes and the same denim topper.  See?  Being inspired by an outfit doesn’t mean you have to recreate it exactly.  Look at all the aspects of the items and see what you have that is similar in one way.  Maybe the color, maybe the cut, solid versus patterned.  All are ideas you can use as a starting point.

How would you interpret any of these outfits with items in your own closet?
