I think I’ve finally figure out when to wear skirts and sweaters. I think it’s this time of year called “fall.”
Don’t mind me, just a little slow on the uptake.

I’d pinned three outfits that paired camel colored leather skirts with black sweaters (this one, this one and this one) and decided to merge all of them together into this outfit that I wore on a day that started out cool and got a bit warmer in the afternoon.
Still not sure how I feel about ankle boots with skirts. Especially black ankle boots. Every time I wear them I feel self conscious all day. However, I think if I’d gone with flats this outfit would have been way too “school girl.” My husband even mentioned it looked like of a like a school uniform.
But, really, do school girls wear faux leather skirts?
When I first saw this faux leather skirt at The Limited back in the fall I fell in love with it. However, I admit I wasn’t entirely sure how I would wear it. Of course, one of the sales associates was wearing it with a gray turtleneck sweater and that gave me the idea for this outfit.
I mean, it’s basically a tan skirt, right? So, what do you wear with a tan skirt? Just about anything! It’s a neutral so it will match so many items I already have in my closet. Also, my boss, who is one of my style icons, immediately exclaimed upon seeing me in it, “CUTE skirt!! So cute!” Which means it’s basically a keeper for sure.
That’s the nice thing about neutral pieces. Black, brown, navy, and gray can all be mixed together. And then, of course, you can pair them with more colorful items as well. See, they do double duty!
This faux leather skirt has been hanging in my closet waiting to be worn since I bought it in October and I was going to wear it today no matter what. Even though when I took these pictures it was in the middle of snowing. Didn’t matter. I figure if Katie can do it, so can I.
I wore the same jacket as yesterday and wanted to wear it all the way buttoned up but the hook and eye closures just weren’t staying closed! So instead you get a flash of brown from the camisole I have on under the jacket.
I ended up really liking this outfit and I think the all neutral palate of cream, brown and tan tones down the fact that this skirt is both faux leather and a tiny bit shorter than what I would normally wear to work. However, I’ve noticed my boss wearing shorter flared skirts recently so I’m pretty sure I’m still in the clear dress code-wise. Good thing, too, because I really want to wear this outfit again!
A friend of mine, Holly, is a representative for CAbi which is personal shopping experience that features a new line up of items every season. CAbi recently released their Fall 2013 pieces and I am admittedly lusting after many of them. High on my radar, though, are these faux leather items, all of which are under $100. CAbi calls them “fleather” which I think is just the cutest name I’ve ever heard.
Appropriately, this week’s IFB Project is to show off your leather looks for summer. The best part about these three CAbi pieces is that they can easily be worn now and then transitioned into fall. Proof? Read on.
The key to wearing leather (or faux leather) in the summer? Pairing it with lightweight tops, summery patterns, strappy shoes, and bright colors. I currently only own one faux leather item (a burgundy pencil skirt) that needs to get back into my outfit rotation soon. In fact, these awesome outfits have inspired me to wear it next week. Stay tuned!
Would you wear faux leather in the summer? Which of the above is your favorite outfit?
Note: I did not receive any compensation for writing this post. I just think Holly is pretty awesome and wanted to share her with you. If you are interested in purchasing any of the CAbi items, you can email her at firstname.lastname@example.org for your own personal shopping experience.
For everyone who guessed the necklace in yesterday’s post as my Take One and Pass It On item, you win! Not sure what you win. Bragging rights, maybe? Anyway, yes, I chose to wear the necklace again. It’s such a statement piece so I wanted to show how it could be toned down a bit.
However, the rest of my outfit just isn’t working for me. I think I just prefer to wear black shoes when I wear black tights. The shoes are just jarring to my eyes. I think there’s just a big too much going on in this outfit for me. Thoughts?
Also, what do you think I’ll be wearing from today’s outfit tomorrow?
You could choose to go with the shape of or the items in the outfit. A dress with a longer coat or cardigan and a scarf. You could choose to go with with the patterns and mix several small patterns and include some plaid or something with a bird pattern. Or you could do what I did and go with the colors of the outfit. A brownish burgundy faux leather skirt mirrors the color of Leona’s dress. A gray scarf echoes her adorable printed scarf. And an oatmeal colored cardigan takes the place of her tan trench coat.
All of this to say that when you see a celebrity photo and think, “I wish I had her wardrobe!” you might be able to get closer than you think with items you already own.
