Happy Monday! For those of you who celebrated Thanksgiving this past Thursday I hope it was lovely. For those of you who just had a normal weekend, I hope it was lovely, too.
I spent the weekend eating and hanging out with my family at my parents’ house. I took the opportunity to put together an outfit for this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge that highlighted the black, tan and blue in the painting “Freedom from Want“.
I took advantage of my parents’ house and chose to take the photos in their dining room to also echo the painting.
My parents have lived in their current house for just over 10 years so although I didn’t grow up there, by now it’s definitely “home”. I think it’s so interesting that no matter where I go or where I live it’s wherever my mom is that I consider “home”.
P.S. When Le Tote sends you a short sleeved dress in the fall, what do you do? You turn it into a skirt, of course! I originally was going to wear this with just the sweater over it but at the last minute I added the button-up. I think it ended up adding just the right amount of interest as well as an additional layer to help me stay warm.
This is the second time I’ve gotten this dress from Le Tote. You can see the first outfit I put together with it here.
Don’t forget you can sign up for Le Tote and get $25 off your first month with code ERIN25!
But, seriously. I make so little off this blog and I certainly don’t take the prettiest pictures. Sure, I do the occasional sponsored post and I do get some great freebies to blog about, but even though I’m not a “big” blogger, I sometimes miss the anonymity of having a Livejournal account. Something that was just me and my thoughts (and the people who read them, of course).
Now, though, my name is attached to this blog and I can’t write as freely as I wish about some things. I’ve always tried to be careful about what I write (in fact, my husband got fired from a job almost 15 years ago because of something he wrote online) because I know the consequences. But that doesn’t mean I don’t occasionally have the wish to write something more about what’s going on with my life other than the fact that I got almost 40 mosquito bites on my arms, legs and face this weekend.
And don’t worry, mom. It’s nothing drastic 🙂 Just the occasional wish that I had someone to invite me to or go with me to all those fun events I see on Instagram. Is it still FOMO if you know you’re missing something?
Except mosquito bites. I am certainly NOT missing those.
Normally on Monday’s I do Inspiration Monday with Two Birds Boutique. You all know that I love to use inspiration photos to help me come up with outfits but for some reason this week’s Monday inspiration photo was just not inspiring me. Instead I had an outfit in my head based on a Stitch Fix blog post I saw last week. A blue dress with a white button-up shirt tied over the top? Yep, I have those pieces. And I loved that the blog post showed how to take a simple dress and layer it up to create six different outfits!
So that’s what I wore. My brain is not firing on all cylinders this morning (although, let’s be honest, when is it ever on a Monday morning) so I needed something simple. And my husband even told me that my outfit was “cute”. He couldn’t quantify it beyond that, but I’ll still take the compliment.
Also, this morning I took 9 pairs of pants to the dry cleaner. Nine! So hopefully once most of my pants are clean I’ll start wearing something other than blue again. Although, no promises.
Last week I wore this lace dress as a skirt for the first time and wasn’t too sure how I felt about that outfit. But I didn’t give up! No! Lace is very on-trend right now (I even saw an adorable eyelet lace dress at Old Navy yesterday) and I really wanted this sleeveless dress to work for colder weather. So, taking your advice from last week to add some black on top to balance out the black on bottom and using this and this as inspiration, I topped my lace dress with my black turtleneck, my leopard belt, and my black mini-bubble necklace.
Yes, I know, it’s technically spring. But the weather in Chicago didn’t get the memo and it’s still freaking cold here. So a turtleneck is totally appropriate.
Although, to be honest, I’m not actually at work today! But if I was, this is what I’d be wearing. So what am I doing instead? I’m on my way to Cleveland, Ohio to visit my best friend from college! I’m sure much hijinks will ensue. Well, at least as many hijinks as you can get up to when you’re in your mid-30s and one of you has a kid.
As I sat at my desk eating my lunch yesterday I kept thinking to myself “don’t spill, don’t spill, don’t spill!” Because, you see, I’m wearing the same red sweater as yesterday and if I’d spilled something on it then I’d be without my take one, pass it on piece for today!
Yes, I chose the red sweater to pass on. Did you guess that’s what I’d wear?
Although, let’s be honest, I totally stole this outfit idea from Jen at Librarian for Life Style. She also paired her polka dot dress with a red sweater and a black and white polka dot scarf and I thought, hey, I have all those pieces!
So here they are. And huge thanks to Jen for the idea! I’m still wrapping my brain around wearing dresses as skirts but this one works perfectly.
Also, in response to your comments on my reader survey I made sure that every piece listed today as a similar item is under $30! In fact, if you wanted to recreate this outfit with all the items I linked it would cost you $120.49 (excluding tax and stuff). And every single piece here can be worn multiple ways so they would all be great additions to your wardrobe.
And speaking of wearing items multiple ways, which item do you think I’ll be passing on to tomorrow?
