Erin and the Chewie

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer · Style Imitating Art

This week’s Style Imitating Art challenge featured “Una and the Lion“, a painting full of neutral colors, a woman in a dress, and some animals. Therefore, I bring you my own version, also full of neutrals, a dress, and an animal: “Erin and the Chewie”.

This outfit was also inspired by one that Jen wore and it features the vest that I swapped with Jen. And since Jen chose the art for this week, basically this entire post is just all Jen all the time.

In other news, I’m meeting with a start-up this week called Shoe Drop to learn more about their business model and services. Basically, it’s a shoe repair service where you drop off your shoes at kiosks around the city, they pick them up, fix them, and deliver them back to the kiosk for you to pick-up. Perfect if you’re busy and don’t want to hunt down a shoe repair store. If there’s anything specifically you’d like me to ask, let me know! I never used a shoe repair service until I moved to Chicago but now I’m all about it since I walk so much and my shoes take a beating.

Speaking of which, I’ve been wearing these gold sandals so much that I bought another, similar pair. The reviews for my first pair said they run a half size big but I don’t agree with that. I ordered a 7.5 in the gold ones and they feel slightly too big. I ordered a 7 in the new pair and they fit perfectly. Just something to keep in mind!

Erin Go Bragh

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

First, I have to say thank you for all the wonderful comments on yesterday’s post. It’s interesting; on Tuesday night I attended my first Idea Potluck and was blown away and inspired by everyone who spoke. It was just what I needed to remind myself that sometimes you just need to put yourself out there and ask and you will be happily surprised at what the universe gives you in return. So, thank you, everyone, for reminding me that being who I am is perfectly fine.

Even if who I am is a gal trying to take pictures outside her parents’ house, which happens to be situated in the windiest part of all of Central Illinois.

Anyway, today is apparently St. Patrick’s Day although Chicago celebrated last weekend. I avoided the crowds downtown and still got to see the green river on my walk to work on Monday morning.  I also figured that since you’re supposed to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day I’d share this outfit with a greenish vest. It’s close enough, right?

I mean, even though my name is Erin (which basically means Ireland), the closest I’ve ever come to Ireland is an Irish pub. Even if my dad tells me it’s as authentic as you’re going to get in the States. I also plan to drink a Guinness (Nitro IPA) tonight. So, you know, close.

Matching your outfit to your bag

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

I’ve never been one to change purses. I’ve also never been one to buy a purse for myself. In fact, I think I can count on one hand the number of purses I’ve purchased. However, when I saw this Vince one during the last Shopbop sale it just called out to me.

So of course I put this outfit together with it.

I was lucky enough to have some Shopbop credits to offset the cost of the bag, plus it was on crazy sale. It’s definitely an investment bag because of the classic shape and color, though, so I don’t mind that I spent more money on it than I usually spend on things.

This outfit, however, is one I wore when we were in Carmel, Indiana in December for the Caribbean Christmas Half Marathon. Which I ran. On a 60 degree day. Yes, in December. Weird, right?

IMG_2923

Just a little bit different from the 5 mile race I posted about on Monday, right?

Anyway, I ran the race (which ended up being my fastest half marathon to date) and then we went to Bub’s Burgers, home of the 16 ounce Big Ugly burger. Which I ate. Which means I got my picture on the wall at Bub’s. So, if you’re ever in Carmel, Indiana go to Bub’s and see if you can find me.

I am a woman of many talents. Including putting together outfits that showcase my new purse.

P.S. I’m thinking of doing “Fitness Fridays” here on the blog since fitness is also a big part of my life. I actually started blogging as a running & fitness blogger and I kind of miss it. Thoughts on adding that into the schedule here?

The Hunt For Brown October

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

For at least a year I’ve seen women wearing brown flats. They’re all pretty similar and pretty basic. But, look, a casual brown flat is something I don’t have and something I find myself wishing I could reach for all the time.

For example, I saw this outfit on Pinterest and knew I had all the pieces to recreate it…except for brown shoes. So, instead, leopard to the rescue!

IMG_9077

Still, I’m on the lookout for brown flats. I ordered these from Zappos but when they arrived I noticed several things:

  1. They came up MUCH higher on my foot at the toes than I like. The vamp, I believe it’s called, covered up my tattoo and just looked really dowdy. However, if you don’t like “toe cleavage” then you might like the rise.
  2. The color wasn’t uniform. It was mottled and lighter in spots and darker in others.
  3. The heel still slipped even though it fit fine in the width at the toe.

So, back they went! I’ve now got these on order. My red MIA flats have lasted me for over 10 years at this point so I think if these fit they should last me awhile. If they don’t work, though, I think my next try will be these. Although, I have a Zappos gift card so I’d prefer to order from there. Suggestions are welcome!

P.S. These are probably the last photos on my rooftop for awhile. Apparently they are closing it to repair our building’s roof. Sad face for me but I suppose a happy face for the people who are tired of leaks.

Then and Now [Vol. 9]

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer · Then and Now

First, let me say that I’m LOVING the conversations we’re having over on my post about how working out can change your wardrobe options. I actually tried a new fitness class at Orangetheory Fitness on Friday and the instructor commented on my back muscle definition. And I felt really strong for most of the dumbbell and bodyweight exercise portion class. But then there was the running at a 12% incline on the treadmill at the end. Oof. Should have chosen to do the treadmill first!

Anyway, today I’ve got a “Then and Now” post for you with jeans, gray shoes, and my olive utility vest.

Here’s the “Now”.

IMG_8130IMG_8131I was originally planning on copying this outfit but, as I mentioned in my post on Friday, a lot of my clothes are too big. Including the white vest I bought last November and still haven’t worn!! I’m almost of a mind to get it altered even though I’m sure it would cost an arm and a leg. I mean, I lusted after that stupid thing and it still has the tags on it!

So, since the original plan didn’t work out, I tossed on this vest at the last minute and then realized this outfit was super close to one I wore last fall.

Hysterically, I even took the photo in almost the same spot and in almost the exact same pose. Also, you can see how much my Chewie puppy has grown since last September!

Anyway, I love how a vest can add just a little extra something and that this vest still fits! It may not be my originally planned outfit but I still feel pretty good in it.

Feelings of Deja Vu

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

I know, I know, I just did a Then and Now post. But today’s outfit IS really similar to one I wore back in December. Just, you know, updated for spring!

And, if we’re being honest, I basically wore a version of this outfit all weekend. On Saturday I wore these jeans, a graphic tee, and a chambray shirt open over the top. Plus boots because it was raining.

On Sunday I wore these jeans, the chambray shirt, a different scarf, and these shoes. And my gray puffer vest.

And here we are today. That’s the nice thing about weekends. You don’t see the same people you work with so no one has to know how many days in a row you wore essentially the same outfit.

Except those of you that I saw this weekend and who are now reading this post. But you won’t tell, right?

Vested Again

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday

Pssst! Voting is open for your favorite outfit of December!

I know, I know. You just saw this vest but like I mentioned the last few times I’ve talked about packing to travel, I love to throw vests on because they can change up an entire outfit AND they help keep you warm. And since I took this vest to visit my parents and now since I’m showing you what I wore on that trip, well, you get to see it again.

Funny story, though. I wore this outfit without the scarf when visiting my family for Christmas. Why? Well, I really wanted to but, see, I’d put a plain black scarf on my Christmas list and then I ended up getting one from my Secret Safety Officer (our version of Secret Santa) at work and he didn’t even know I had one on my list! But since I didn’t know if one of my family members had gotten me a black scarf I didn’t want to wear it and make them upset that I’d already gotten one.

However, I REALLY like it better with the scarf so this is totally how I wanted to wear it. But, I sacrificed my good looks until after we opened presents. Turned out no one else got me a black scarf so I would have been safe! And I’m happy my Secret Safety Officer asked his girlfriend for help when picking me out a gift.

striped-shirt-olive-vest-2Also, I clearly have a problem when wearing stripes and a vest when visiting my parents. This particular top is replacing the one I wore last time (seen here). I put this one in my closet from Le Tote because I was looking for a replacement for my old Loft one. This one is perfect which is why it’s not getting sent back. Sorry anyone else who wanted it! Just kidding. They have more than one. Proof? Sarah at Sarah’s Real Life wore it the same time I did.

Post-Christmas Greens

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday

I hope everyone is enjoying the end of their year! This is the first time in six years that I haven’t had the week between Christmas and New Year’s off and trying to fit in all the things I  used to do during that time is….interesting. I was so spoiled!

Anyway, I had a great time celebrating Christmas with my family and thankfully my stomach bug cleared up so I was able to eat whatever I wanted. Which is why I was grateful for this incredibly comfy sweater.

I bought this sweater on a whim at Old Navy one day and hadn’t really worn it much. But when I layered it over a white tank top I never wanted to take it off.

This outfit isn’t particularly ground-breaking or anything but it’s a good example of my casual style. Also, I’ve really been into vests this winter. And sweaters. But, I mean, winter in Illinois means sweaters.

It also means gifts. How’s that for a segue? I’m hoping to get my usual budget/gift post up this week (I know. You’ll just die without it.) but remember that previously mentioned no time off work? Yeah.

Maybe I’ll put it up on New Year’s Day when no one’s reading anyway 🙂

The Great Cargo Vest Swap

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

Old Navy cargo vest, purple sweater, jeans, burgundy suede kitten heels, scarf, belt. Perfect for a Chicago fall!

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I had ordered an Old Navy cargo vest (the one linked above) but that I wasn’t sure it was the right fit for me. I even posted a picture on Facebook asking for opinions. See, I knew which vest I wanted. It’s the one that Jen from Librarian for Life & Style had been wearing for a year and it made me drool over how cute it was every single time. Sadly, the new one from Old Navy was just too long on me.

But, wait! Jen is taller than me! She suggested we try swapping them and lo and behold the swap worked! My new one was the right length on her taller frame and her shorter one was great on my short self.

So, in homage to Jen and her amazing vest that is now mine (!!) I present you my recreation of one of Jen’s cargo vest outfits.

And now I have my very own cargo vest that I am so excited to wear! So, thank you, Jen for suggesting this swap. I will do my best to make your vest proud.

P.S. This is the same cardigan I wore last Friday! Can you tell? I’m only telling you this so I can link up with AJ and her Friday Remix series.
