Pinterest Parallels [Vol. 3]

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter · Pinterest Parallels

Back in 2012 when this blog was in its infancy and I had just discovered other fashion blogs and Pinterest I saved this outfit from What I Wore. I remember showing it to my mom and saying that I loved the patterned topper with the dark teal shirt but that I didn’t have anything like it. She pointed out that I didn’t need those exact items. Instead I just needed something black and white patterned to wear with something else that green color.

Fast forward to three years later (almost exactly!) and I found myself putting together this outfit using my herringbone vest, a dark teal sweater and my leopard print TOMS wedges.

herringbone-vest-green-sweater-3I love that I didn’t go out and try to recreate that outfit right away. I was patient and kept it saved for when I ended up with all these pieces in my closet. I acquired them each over time and have worn each of them in several different ways (examples: sweater | vest | necklace | shoes) .

I also love being able to mix and match the pieces in my wardrobe to create so many different looks. One of my goals of this blog (and my closet consultations and You Pick Wednesdays) is helping people to see that they can wear things many different ways. Don’t get stuck in a rut! And don’t rush out and buy all the pieces to recreate an outfit because chances are you’ll find that rut and stick there. Instead, if you see an outfit you love save it and know that it will always be there when you realize, hey, I DO have something similar!

Cardigans and Librarians

Today I’m doing a presentation on what types of jobs you can get with a Masters in Library Science so I figure it’s only appropriate that I wear a cardigan. I mean, what else do you associate with librarians other than cardigans?? Just kidding. I hope you associate things like books and education. Not just cardigans!

Although, in the interest of full disclosure, I do not consider myself a librarian (I’m a records manager) and I actually took these pictures yesterday at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Actually, I love the Chicago Botanic Garden so much I think I need to do an entire photo shoot there. It’s so beautiful no matter what time of year you visit. In fact, I have taken photos there once before, when I showed you this casual outfit my mother-in-law brought me from Italy!

The only downside is that this time I was there sans photographer; so welcome back to the land of the point-and-shoot camera. And the land of me wearing another comfy dress outfit. Apologies for both.

Have you voted for your favorite outfit of April yet? I’m surprised by the results so far! Will your vote change that?

Welcome to Monday! Did everyone have a good weekend? Remember last weekend when I ran that half marathon? Well this weekend I didn’t run one but I did work at one. Yes, I worked on Friday and Saturday at the Wisconsin Marathon and Half Marathon handing out race packets, answering questions, doing some crowd control at the finish line, and cleaning up after the race.

Which basically means that Sunday was spent recovering! And outfit planning, of course. Today’s outfit is my interpretation of the Style Imitating Art painting for this week chosen by Jen of Librarian for Life & Style:

Lawren Harris, Tamarack Swamp, Algoma, c. 1920, oil on canvas

Lawren Harris, Tamarack Swamp, Algoma, c. 1920, oil on canvas

I decided to pull out the blues and the tans in the painting and then accent it with my purple-ish bubble necklace. Now, some people out there might be saying “Bubble necklaces are SO 2012.” And I say, so what? Seriously, I’ve only ever seen one being worn “in the wild” (aka not on a blog) and whenever I wear it I get compliments. Which to me says that the general public is not over them yet and still find them unique. Which means I’m still going to wear mine.

The joys of not being a total slave to trends is that you don’t have to revamp your entire wardrobe every year, right? And you can keep remixing your items! Like I did with this blue dress.

Also, if you want to see how others used this painting to create an outfit, be sure to visit Librarian for Life and Style!

A Little Peek of Gold

First things first: yes, I got my hair cut. And it’s about half an inch shorter than I like. But that means that in a few weeks it will be the perfect length. Thank goodness my hair grows quickly. Until then I’ll just have to be hyper-vigilant about wedge-shaped hair. Although, it looks positively flapper-esque when I wear my winter hat.

Secondly, yes, I am doing the Take One, Pass It On Challenge today. I actually had a completely different outfit planned but at the last minute decided that I also wanted to participate in Bri’s Third Thursday theme of animal print with a new outfit. So what did I pass on? The gold shell I had on with my red, gold, and brown outfit! See it peeking out underneath my sweater?

This shell is quite long on me and I’ve always worn it tucked in. But after seeing a few sweaters at Target that had bottom hems embellished with a different material such as this one and this one I thought this would be the perfect top to wear underneath a sweater. Turns out, it works pretty well! And it adds a little extra visual interest to what might otherwise be a much simpler outfit.

Style Up: The Easy Way to Get Dressed Every Morning

Pardon me while I take a moment out of the Take One, Pass it On Challenge to tell you about something I think you’ll like.

Do you struggle with figuring out what to wear in the morning? Do you check the weather like 10 times trying to figure out if you should wear pants, tights, or a skirt? Are you stuck in a rut with your clothing? Yes, even I have these moments. Which is why when I read about The Style Up over on Thirties Two Cents I thought it was a pretty neat idea.

What is The Style Up? At its core it’s a free service that emails you a new outfit idea every night! For example, last night they emailed me this:

Photo from The Style Up website

And, as you can see, I took that as my inspiration when getting dressed this morning! Black pants, black turtleneck, camel blazer, patent leather shoes? I have all those in my closet. Why not wear them together?

The Style Up also takes your personal preferences in style and the weather conditions in your area into account.  When you create an account you get to choose your “style profile”.

Images from The Style Up

Then you get to go wild in their image archive saying whether an outfit is “Love”, “It’s Okay” or “Dislike”. If you want, you can add your own feedback as well. This, combined with you entering your basic location via entering your zip code, gives The Style Up the information they need to start sending you outfit ideas. You can give your feedback on every outfit they send you and The Style Up will “learn” more about your style.

I’ve been using it for several weeks and I’ve gotten some good ideas for future outfits. Sometimes you do have to look at an outfit and ignore how it fits on the model (they use photos from online catalogs, mostly) and just go with the idea they write in the outfit suggestions they include with every photo.

The Style Up also has a few other features but the daily outfit idea email is my favorite. And, hello, it’s free! So why wouldn’t you try it out? What do you have to lose?

Note, I was NOT compensated for or asked to write this post. I just think The Style Up is pretty cool and wanted to share it with you.

P.S. It’s raining and gross outside. I hate taking pictures indoors. Also, I liked this pose even though I cut off my head in the picture. Which is why I’m including it anyway.

Stripes and Leopard…Again

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

If you follow me on Instagram (which I am TRYING to remember to use more often) you might remember that I basically wore this same outfit last Friday. However, I was working from home so I figured that it needed an actual office outing. So, for work I added the bubble necklace, the bracelet and swapped out my leopard print flats for leopard print heels.  And when it gets cooler outside? I’ll add my leopard print scarf!

I really don’t know what it is about stripes that make me think to pair them with leopard print, but I still contend that it’s the easiest way to get into pattern mixing.

P.S. The above picture is to show you why I don’t take pictures in my apartment if I can help it. The lighting is HORRIBLE.

Blackhawks Red and Black for the Office

For those of you reading this who don’t live in Chicago or don’t live with a hockey fan you probably don’t know that the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team won the Stanley Cup last week. This is a big deal and the whole city has been celebrating since then. Today is the Blackhawks celebratory parade and rally. Since I live about 1.5 miles from the Blackhawks hockey arena and work less than half a mile from the rally you can probably imagine that my commute this morning was filled with red and black Blackhawks gear. I’m not a hockey fan and probably only watched about 30 minutes total of the games but I didn’t want to be a party pooper. So I decided to figure out a way to wear a classy red and black outfit to the office. In fact, here’s another way you could wear a red and white polka dot shirt and still be Blackhawks appropriate!

I wish I could show you just how awe-inspiring (and, to be honest, a bit terrifying) it was to ride the train into work this morning and see Blackhawks red and black lining the streets. I took this picture from my office window but it pales in comparison to these from the Chicago Tribune since mine just looks like regular tourists and theirs show how packed the streets were.

Are you a sports fan? Do you wear outfits to reflect holidays or events?

EDITED TO ADD:  My coworker braved the crowds. This is what it looks like at 20 minutes after noon.

Chicago Bike to Work Week: What to Wear

This week is Bike to Work Week in Chicago and since I only live 1.5 miles from my office I do occasionally bike there. The most difficult part for me, though, is figuring out what to wear while on my bike. Do I wear my regular work clothes? Do I wear workout clothes and change once I get to work? I’ve done it both ways and it really depends on the weather.

For example, today was supposed to be cool in the morning. So I decided to wear running tights, a t-shirt and a jacket (and bike shoes, of course) on my bike and change into my work clothes when I got to work. Except it was actually quite warm on my bike! Which means even though I overdressed, I’m glad I didn’t wear my office outfit because I sweated in my Chicago Marathon shirt instead of my polka dot cardigan.

Riding my bike to work can be quite a challenge and requires a bit of planning the night before. Deciding what to wear, what to pack, and making sure I don’t forget anything. Still, it’s a nice way to start my morning and Bike to Work Week always reminds me to get out on my bike more often.

Do you bike? How do you get to work?

A Simple Houndstooth

Right now I’m pretty happy with my closet. But even so there are days when I stand there and stare at all the hangers and think, “I wish I had….” Today was one of those days. I perused Pinterest. I flipped through all my hanging items. I stared at my skirts. I touched all my dresses. And I thought about how I wanted to wear something simple but sophisticated. So I’m not sure how I ended up with a red button-up shirt and a black and white houndstooth skirt.

Okay, I suppose the colors are simple. I mean, I did just do an entire post on pairing red with something other than black and white and here I am putting it with black and white. But I think what I really wanted was a nice, comfy dress that needed very little accessorizing but still looked professional. Hmm. Maybe this is something for which I will keep my eye out.

A Little Cropped Lace

This week I’ve been feeling rather uninspired. Then I remembered I hadn’t worn these navy lace pants since November and knew I wanted to wear them this week! But then I couldn’t figure out what to wear with them. Purple cardigan? Okay. Lighter purple shirt? Okay. Oh! Purple bubble necklace! Got it!

Still, I think my husband had to take about 100 photos of this outfit to get two that I liked. Not sure if it was the outfit, my (lack of) posing skills, or the angle of where he was standing, but it just wasn’t happening for me.

So these are the two I liked the best. And even then I don’t love them. But, I do love the purple paired with the navy. Such a fun color combination! I’m also hoping to wear these pants a bit more this spring since I bought them right at the tail end of cropped pants season last year. What colors would you like to see with them?
