Booties and a dress plus a vest is best

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

One of the best parts of having a friend with a shop full of clothing is getting to play dress up when I go over there. A few weeks ago, I was wearing this dress and booties when I showed up at Annabelle’s. I found this awesome duster vest in her racks and immediately put it on.

I ended up loving this outfit so much that I borrowed the vest and wore it to a Chicagogrammers outing at Joy District. Amusingly, the style name of this vest is “Joy”. So, yes, I wore a Joy to Joy District.

Thanks to Maggie for pointing that out.

IMG_5210

I have not yet added this vest to my closet, but there’s a good chance it will happen. I feel like a vest just adds that little extra something. And when it’s not quite cold enough to break out the puffy vests a lightweight one like this can be that perfect “completer piece”.

IMG_5192

In other news, I’m still on the fence about booties and dresses or skirts. But, the more I see other people wearing them the more comfortable I am, In fact, I got a lovely compliment on my booties from another Chicagogrammer so clearly the combo doesn’t look as weird on me as I thought it might.  So, yay for that!

Your thoughts on booties and dresses? I’d be curious to see if they’ve changed since the last time I posted about it.

For this week’s Style Imitating Art choice by Jen, I wasn’t feeling anything in my own closet. Thankfully, I know a gal who has a clothing shop with a 1000+ piece inventory! Turns out, she also had the perfect chair for me to use as my backdrop.

I may have also borrowed her dog, Budweiser, for this photo shoot as well. He and Chewie are best doggy buds and it’s basically impossible for them to not be in the same room as Annabelle and me.

IMG_9306

Of course, when you’re working with dogs, you’re going to have some outtakes. So, here’s a few for your viewing pleasure. Because, let’s be honest, even though this outfit is amazing and a perfect interpretation of her blue dress, pearls, and florals, you’re really just here for the puppy pictures.

Anyway, this outfit is actually for sale in the Belle on the Roe shop. If you’re in Chicago, you can setup a time to visit using this link. She’s located at the corner of Ashland and Diversey. Or you can join her Facebook group and see all four of us act like fools on the regular and score some beautiful outfits, just like this one!

Also, don’t forget to visit Jen’s blog for the full round-up of all of this week’s outfits! And stay tuned for my turn to host on Monday, September 4th. I’ve got something fun up my sleeve that will also include a giveaway!

SIA: Spring in Chicago

Style Imitating Art

To those of you in the United States, I hope you’re joining me in celebrating Memorial Day. Memorial Day in Chicago, is, among many things, the “official” kick-off to summer. So, I suppose, it’s only appropriate that today I show how I interpreted a painting called “Spring.”

Yeah, I know. Just go with me here.

Anyway, I got this dress in my latest Le Tote shipment and wore it on Friday night to the summer kick-off party for the Randolph Street Market. I also decided that the blue color and the texture of the fabric went perfectly with some of the cards in the inspiration painting.

IMG_2178

The weather in Chicago decided to be amazing this weekend and has blessed us with sunny and warm days that are perfect for taking the dog to the park, watching my husband race his car, and going for a run. And drinking some cocktails at the Randolph Street Market Garden Party, of course.

IMG_2163

Clearly I didn’t take these photos at the Garden Party. I took them at the under-construction-party. But now that the weather is nice I tend to ride a bike home from work and I pass this corner almost every day. I like that it gives a unique view of the Sears Tower and, interestingly enough, my parents’ condo. In fact, it’s staying in that condo that made me fall in love with city living.

Now I’m here, taking photos with this in what is almost my backyard. Crazy. Summer in Chicago is the other reason we all live here, by the way. So of course I’m looking forward to it!

IMG_2169

I hope you’ll join me on Wednesday for the round-up of all the awesome outfits that have been submitted for this round of Style Imitating Art. Yes, I know, it’s supposed to be Tuesday but I have a post coming up tomorrow about how I get in enough protein for power lifting. Hopefully you’ll find that interesting, too. Otherwise, come back Wednesday!

SIA: Thanksgiving Edition

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall · Style Imitating Art

Happy Monday! For those of you who celebrated Thanksgiving this past Thursday I hope it was lovely. For those of you who just had a normal weekend, I hope it was lovely, too.

I spent the weekend eating and hanging out with my family at my parents’ house. I took the opportunity to put together an outfit for this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge that highlighted the black, tan and blue in the painting “Freedom from Want“.

I took advantage of my parents’ house and chose to take the photos in their dining room to also echo the painting.

My parents have lived in their current house for just over 10 years so although I didn’t grow up there, by now it’s definitely “home”. I think it’s so interesting that no matter where I go or where I live it’s wherever my mom is that I consider “home”.

IMG_2696

P.S. When Le Tote sends you a short sleeved dress in the fall, what do you do? You turn it into a skirt, of course! I originally was going to wear this with just the sweater over it but at the last minute I added the button-up. I think it ended up adding just the right amount of interest as well as an additional layer to help me stay warm.

This is the second time I’ve gotten this dress from Le Tote. You can see the first outfit I put together with it here.

Summer Dress Blues

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

For my most recent Le Tote order I swapped out a few items for some casual dresses. I chose this blue and white one because it reminded me of a polka dot blue and white dress I used to have and consigned because it got too tight on my hips (and now I’m sad I got rid of it because I bet it would fit again).

Unfortunately, while this dress showed off my shoulders (and, unfortunately, I forgot to get a picture without the cardigan), it billowed out strangely in the waist making me look, well, pregnant. Even Jason mentioned that it needed a belt or something. I tried to compensate by wearing the cardigan completely buttoned up but, in the end, it just wasn’t working for me.

IMG_2134

I thought about putting this outfit together and posting it as my “Fourth of July” outfit but, as I mentioned yesterday, I didn’t actually wear anything other than workout capris all weekend. But I did wear this outfit to work on Monday.

And, I do have an interesting story to share about the year I wore the blue and white polka dot dress for Fourth of July. It was our first or second summer in Chicago and I’d convinced Jason to donate enough money to the local public radio station to get us tickets to watch the fireworks from their terrace on Navy Pier. That was when I learned you DO NOT go to Navy Pier to watch the fireworks. After walking miles in heels and getting there late and being underwhelmed, we almost got run over by fighting teenagers in one of the public transit tunnels on our way home. Let’s just say that ever since then I’ve been perfectly happy to stay home on the Fourth. At least now we can see fireworks from our balcony!

Why I don’t like to do laundry

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

Don’t forget to vote for your favorite outfit of March!

Back in January I went to visit my dad in Florida and after a day touring the Ringling estate and museum we found ourselves at an outlet mall. I remembered that a coworker of mine had been raving about her Brooks Brothers no-wrinkle, no-iron shirts so I suggested we go into the Brooks Brothers outlet store. I ended up with a plain white shirt but also found this pretty blue striped one on the clearance rack.

brooks-brothers-shirt-jeans-4brooks-brothers-shirt-jeans-3I actually ended up wearing this shirt and my silver Sperry’s the very next day to watch horse racing. And I’ve now actually worn the shirt three times total but I fully admit I haven’t washed it yet. I’ve been told that it’s super easy to wash, dry, and shake out and it won’t shrink or wrinkle but I’m still scared! I like it a lot and I don’t want to ruin it!

Does that make me weird? Is anyone else afraid to wash their clothes?

I know I’ve talked about Le Tote before but they recently added a new feature where you can swap out items in your Tote before it ships! Meaning if they’ve put something in that you’re just not in the mood for or you don’t think you’ll have an opportunity to wear you can swap it for a different piece.

I did just that with this top. There was something kind of plain and solid colored in the batch and I decided I wanted to try something colorful. And here we are.

letote-top-blue-cardigan-3And keeping with the colorful theme, I tossed on my red flats because wearing nude flats just seemed too boring. Although, I admit, with this much color on I kind of felt a little clownish.

Regardless, I liked all the colors in the top but the bottom hem had these weird slits in the front towards the sides that I didn’t find particularly flattering. Which is why I’m glad it’s from Le Tote! I can wear it once and send it back. letote-top-blue-cardigan-2

Shoe Emergency

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

You guys remember these navy suede shoes? The ones I walked all over Chicago to find? Well, I had them on yesterday when some jackass couldn’t wait for me to finish my turn in the revolving metal door at the train station and pushed it into the back of my foot. Sadly, it caused the ankle strap of my right shoe to rip away from the heel.

Thankfully, it’s a clean tear so I think it can be fixed. However, in the mean time I was left with a shoe I couldn’t walk in and only my company-branded flip-flops at my desk. And the End of Summer Bash fundraiser at Hub 51 to attend after work.

All of which added up to an emergency trip to DSW on my lunch break. And finding these Nine West ankle strap wedge heels on the clearance rack for $20.

In fact, the shoes ended up being my favorite part of this outfit. I mean, I love the pants but the sweater with them just wasn’t what I had envisioned. I wanted a more slouchy look and this one is just a bit too square.  I also felt that by adding the brown shoes instead of my original navy ones that I needed to balance it out with a different necklace. I feel like this one from Bauble Bar would be perfect! And it’s currently only $20. Be still my wallet.

But, since I was attending an end of summer party I wanted to give a nod to both summer and fall. The white and printed pants for summer and the darker closed-toed shoes for fall seemed to fit the bill.  And now I have a new pair of brown heels.

Let’s go to lunch

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday

Someone asked me once when it was officially appropriate to break out riding boots for every day wear. I said once the high temperature for the day was going to be in the 50s. Well, we definitely hit that in Chicago last week! So weird to think that I went from sweating in a sleeveless dress to freezing in boots and long sleeves.

I fully admit that I wore this outfit to work on Friday AND to lunch with my parents on Saturday. What? You don’t sometimes wear the same thing two days in a row? Did I just say something really horrible?

Anyway, we went to Bar Takito which just opened last month near our apartment. The food was tasty and now I really want to go there for dinner when they have an expanded menu. However, so many new restaurants have opened up in my neighborhood that I feel I need to try somewhere new first!

Although, clearly I don’t necessarily feel the need to try a new outfit on the weekends.

My Favorite Things

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

I noticed last week that you all seem to get a kick out of it when I let Chewie steal the show. So, here he is again.

I mean, I hope you think the outfit is cute. It IS my favorite dress, after all.

Blue cardigan, blue dress, blue sandals and black dressAnd I know that this outfit is super matchy-matchy with the cardigan, shoes and necklace but sometimes it’s fun to use a solid neutral base to highlight another brighter color.

Or, you know, you just want to wear all your favorite things for no real reason. I don’t have anything too exciting going on at work today. I don’t have anywhere fun to be. I just wanted to wear this outfit (which, to be honest, has been worn many times before but not photographed).

So, tell me, you have certain pieces you just love to wear more often than others, right?
