Ms. Hurley is wearing something that is very on-trend right now: velvet. Which just reminds me of the black velvet pants I had in high school. I don’t currently have anything velvet in my closet so I just went with the color scheme here and stuck with black and grays.
Although, to be honest, I could have worn jeans today. I’m not in the office (took a vacation day) but I still wanted to show you how to take a casual inspiration photo and make it work appropriate.
Also, don’t forget about my contest to win a $50 Visa gift card! Two comments before November 22nd as well as helping me hit either 100 Facebook likes or 200 pageviews a day for at least 5 days. For your reference, here are the stats so far:
Facebook Likes: 65
Days with pageviews over 200: 2
Thanks for your help, everyone!
And thanks again to Molly for taking my outfit photos this week! We took them all on an abnormally warm (and windy) Sunday so if I seem underdressed for current Chicago conditions that’s why.
Last night I stayed up way too late reading superstorm Sandy updates on Twitter and through various websites. I was also following the news about the Chicago lakefront and the 60 MPH winds we’re supposed to get today. The radio even specifically told women not to wear dresses or skirts today! I think they were joking but I totally understand why. It’s windy out there!
(Side note: Chicago is not called the Windy City solely because of the wind.)
As a result of staying up too late with my jaw hanging open I grabbed my trusty Pinterest inspiration board this morning for an outfit idea. This one grabbed my attention:
Turns out there’s a reason I like this look. I’ve worn it before! I try not to duplicate outfits on the blog but I knew it was bound to happen. So, here you get a taste of the same look with a few minor changes. Different pants, shoes, shirt, and accessories.
Also, lest you think it’s nice enough outside to commute to work sans jacket, here’s what I actually wore on my windy walk to the train.
Just imagine the jacket buttoned up and some black gloves on my hands and you’re got the picture.
I’m thankful that today all I have to deal with is wind. My thoughts go out to everyone in NYC, New Jersey, and other areas along the East Coast.

I don’t really have much to say about this outfit. I’ve been at a conference for the past three days and my brain is fried. Also, while taking this photo the wind blew my camera off the table I had it propped on and now it’s acting funny.

Sometimes you just have to go with the old standby – black. It always looks professional, you can dress it up or down and it goes with just about anything. In fact, when I got married I asked my bridesmaids to wear a black dress. They got to choose whatever they wanted. I knew that black dresses accentuated with lavender shawls (my gift to them) would look incredibly classy.
So when I don’t know what to wear I pull out my black pants and pair them with a fun top.
Black may not be the trendiest thing on the planet, but it’s always in style.
But what about those trendier items? Do you want to see what they look like in the real world? Or maybe you just want to see how to jazz up a pair of black pants in other ways. Well, now’s your chance!
You Pick Wednesday starts tomorrow! So, send your picks to email@example.com to get in on the fun!

Basically, Wednesdays are YOUR day to tell me what you want to see!
Some days you’ve just got to go for simple. Black pants and a button down are about as simple as it gets. But this button down has a little sass because of the ruffles at the top and the small stripe. Pair it with a fun animal print belt and you’ve got some fun pattern mixing to take simple up a notch!

Hello, Monday! Another woman who works on my floor told me that my top looks very “spring-y”. Well, spring isn’t quite here yet but that’s okay. I got my inspiration for this outfit from J at J’s Everyday Fashion. Polka dots with red and black? Don’t mind if I do.
Although, once I had it on it kept reminding me of something else:
But Dalmatians are cute so that’s okay, too. And there’s a reason they look so good next to a fire truck. Red, black and white are classic!
I’ve been wanting a cobalt blue blazer for awhile but I didn’t want to pay an arm and a leg for one. I found this one at Forever 21 and I think it fits the bill perfectly. I have lots of ideas of what to wear it with.
How do you feel about the bright color trend right now?

I swear, I laid in bed last night and this morning trying to figure out what the heck to wear today that wouldn’t be a repeat of something I’ve already worn recently. What I ended up with isn’t all that different from things I’ve worn in the past, but I never would have thought to put this scarf with this sweater before.
I’m telling you, trying to wear something different as often as possible does help you get a little creative!
Oh, and here are some close-ups of the accessories:
