Games and Adventures

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

Have you voted for your favorite outfit of October yet?

Happy Monday! How was your weekend? Mine was full of adventure including a Game of Thrones themed party at a local bar, exploring an abandoned grain silo with a view of downtown, and working at one of the largest races in Chicago.

Which means that you get a few photos from the weekend and an older outfit photo that I originally shared on Instagram. So let’s start with what you’re probably here to see: the outfit photo.

IMG_0079Vest – Le Tote (same) | Turtleneck – The Limited (similar) | Jeans – American Eagle Outfitters (same) | Shoes – Vince Camuto (similar) | Belt – Target (same)

I felt totally awesome and badass in this outfit and I can’t even explain why. The vest was slightly too big so I might request it again from Le Tote in a size smaller. But overall I really liked this outfit. Noting too fussy but it felt put together and comfortable. And, yes, I’m wearing open-toed shoes with a turtleneck. No, I can’t explain it.

What I can explain is my Game of Thrones party outfit!

nymeria-sand-snake-costumeI decided to go as one of the Sand Snakes…but only if I could find what I needed at Goodwill. I don’t historically have good luck at Goodwill but I decided to chance it. And I found everything I needed! I was in shock and super thrilled.

The dress was a J. Crew bridesmaid’s dress that I got for $7 and trimmed with brown duct tape and ribbon. The leggings were $6. The belt was $3 and the dog leash that I wore like a whip was $2. So, all of that for $18 plus the duct tape and ribbon at Michael’s Crafts and the boots I already owned. I didn’t win the costume contest but that’s okay. I had a great time putting my costume together!

That was Friday night. Saturday morning we got up early to go do some urban exploring. There are some abandoned grain silos in an industrial area of the city just southwest of downtown. They are apparently a haven for urban decay photographers so I joined my husband and some of his friends for an adventure.

IMG_0383 IMG_0437My husband hasn’t finished processing all of his photos yet so I just grabbed the two that I’m in to give you a taste. I also took a few with my iPhone that you should be able to see here. I’m looking forward to going back on a warmer day (and with more advanced notice) to shoot some outfit photos here. There are so many cool backgrounds!

Because you guys might be tired of just seeing the stuff around my apartment.

Wednesday, though, I’ve got a new location for you! More photos from Carmel, Indiana!

Sequined Night Life

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

In the interest of full disclosure, I should tell you that I took these pictures about two weeks ago with plans to wear this outfit to an event with Mag Mile Runner. However, we both ended up bailing on the event so the outfit didn’t get worn. But, I loved it so much that I knew I had to find a reason to wear it.

black-sequin-leggings-4For Jason’s birthday I made us reservations at Bavette’s and decided that was the occasion to wear sequined pants.

Of course, sitting at a table eating dinner doesn’t show off the sequins in all their glory. So I also wore them to work. black-sequin-leggings-2Wearing them (with black flats, by the way) around the office elicited many comments of “Your pants are amazing!” and “You look like you’re ready to party!”. I told one girl that just because we have a casual office doesn’t mean you can’t look fancy sometimes.

By the way, Bavette’s was AMAZING. I think I’m going to dream about the lamb that I had for weeks. It’s a pricey place but the food was really good and, after a bit of a rough start, the service was excellent as well.

So, if you want to have an amazing day and night I highly recommend sequin pants and a really good restaurant.

Divvy not dally

Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

On Wednesday I did something I’d never done before.

No, not take a blurry picture. I’ve done that plenty of times. No, I rode a Divvy bike!

For those of you not in Chicago, Divvy is our bike sharing program that allows you to check out a bike for up to 30 minutes at a time. I’ve been walking home from work a lot more often now (even though I work slightly further away from home than I used to, the walk is more pleasant) and finally Mag Mile Runner (plus a $10 discount) convinced me to try it.

For $65 a year I have unlimited 30 minute rides. Otherwise it’s $7 for every 24 hours. I figure I only have to ride it 10 times to make back my money and I’ve already ridden it twice.

In fact, these pictures were taken AFTER my Divvy ride! And, yes, I wore my helmet. But since my ride only took me 13 minutes (yes, they time you and you can look it up later) it was only 13 minutes of helmet time so the helmet hair aftermath wasn’t that bad.

Or maybe it was horrible and that’s why I took blurry photos. So you couldn’t tell. You’ll never know!

Until the next time I take photos post-Divvy, anyway. And since I plan to ride home as often as possible, that might be fairly often.

Casual Professional

Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

Apologies for the lack of outfit posts this week. Holiday weeks just throw me for a loop. Not that I’m complaining about four day weeks at all. Trust me.

Anyway, I don’t even have that exciting of an outfit for you today. It’s a suit. A black suit. At least I added some stripes?

I had a meeting today at a location with a “casual” dress code but I didn’t want to show up in jeans. So, in order to make my suit more casual I added a tee shirt and rolled up the sleeves of the jacket.

Admittedly, it took me a lot longer than it should have to come up with this outfit! I’ve gotten so out of the rut of wearing my black pants that I honestly forget what to pair with them. Something so simple shouldn’t be so difficult, right?

Anyway, if I had wanted to wear jeans I would have kept everything else the same and just swapped out the black dress pants for my bootcut jeans. See? Easy casual Friday look all set for you for tomorrow.

Speaking of tomorrow, I’ll be posting my Favorite Outfit of May round-up so don’t forget to come back and vote!

P.S. There might not be any close-up shots of my left side for awhile. I, uh, accidentally gave myself a black eye on Saturday morning while hurriedly pulling on my arm warmers before going for a run. My hand slipped and I literally punched myself in the face. See? Bloggers are not perfect.

Suited up with nowhere to go

Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

You guys, I did it again. I wore almost an entire outfit from The Limited. It’s getting kind of ridiculous, don’t you think? Although, to be honest, it’s not like you couldn’t put together a gray pencil skirt, black blazer, and white top outfit from just about any store. I’m certainly not the first person to do it.

I wore this outfit because we were supposed to be leading two training sessions at work this week. However, since where I work doesn’t actually mandate or require employees to attend any trainings, our registration numbers were so low that we had to cancel at the last minute. Sad.

But, hey, at least I look nice and professional while I sit at my desk, right?

Cardigans and Librarians

Today I’m doing a presentation on what types of jobs you can get with a Masters in Library Science so I figure it’s only appropriate that I wear a cardigan. I mean, what else do you associate with librarians other than cardigans?? Just kidding. I hope you associate things like books and education. Not just cardigans!

Although, in the interest of full disclosure, I do not consider myself a librarian (I’m a records manager) and I actually took these pictures yesterday at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Actually, I love the Chicago Botanic Garden so much I think I need to do an entire photo shoot there. It’s so beautiful no matter what time of year you visit. In fact, I have taken photos there once before, when I showed you this casual outfit my mother-in-law brought me from Italy!

The only downside is that this time I was there sans photographer; so welcome back to the land of the point-and-shoot camera. And the land of me wearing another comfy dress outfit. Apologies for both.

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you had a great weekend. Mine was packed full including:

  • Leading my first group run with the Chicago Area Runners Association
  • Going to my nephew’s little league game and my niece’s kiddie soccer game
  • Drinking way too many beers while hanging out with my family
  • Going to brunch with my Ragnar Chicago team (that’s a 200 mile running relay, by the way)
  • Visiting the Maxwell Street Market in Chicago for tacos and tamarind Italian ice (and to marvel at what is basically a flea market)
  • Passing out for a nap.

And because I’m going to be super busy today attending a conference I had to take these pictures last night. But since I fell asleep and then it started raining we had to sneak them in using the flood lights on the roof.

I think, though, that the lighting makes the red really pop. Of course, pairing red with black and white always makes red pop. I needed something comfortable to wear today and this dress is probably the most forgiving item I own. The last time I wore it I also paired it with a belt but wore a cardigan instead of a blazer. Not sure why I haven’t featured this dress on the blog since then! I’m thinking it needs to become a summer staple.

Some days you just want to go with a simple black and white outfit, am I right? Days when you need something simple. Days when you want to wear some of your comfiest items. The key is to make sure those items are a nice mixture of textures and patterns so you don’t look like a rumbled newspaper. You know, black and white and tread all over?

I crack myself up.

Anyway! Today we’re having a lunchtime staff meeting in our conference room which is always cold. Hence the cardigan. We’re also trying a new-to-us restaurant: Naansense. Hilariously, I ordered the lamb naanwich…which is also basically what I’m making for dinner tonight. It will be the battle of the lamb sandwiches! I’m pretty sure who is going to win, though.

Today I got to do one of the best things I’ve done all year: I awarded a trophy to a department that had done some amazing things and ended up going almost completely paperless. You should have seen the excitement in their faces when I handed them their giant trophy at our annual appreciation breakfast. Made my entire day.

One of the things I love about my job is training people to take control of their environments and make their lives easier. Unfortunately this is just a small piece of my job. I’d love to do it full time! Helping people is a passion of mine.

Because I don’t get to do that full time is one of the reasons I have this blog. Am I the best dresser on the planet? Nope. Do I expect you will run out and copy every single outfit I wear? Nope. But when people tell me that my blog has inspired them to look at their closet in a new way it gives me the same feeling I got when I saw how thrilled that department’s staff was to have that trophy.

So, thanks to those of you who give me those trophies. It makes what I do here more worthwhile.

Subtle Pattern Mixing

Welcome to Monday, everyone! How was your weekend? I have a lovely low-key three days (yes, remember, I had Friday off) that basically consisted of running, grilling, and watching the first season of The Glades. I lead an exciting life, don’t I? Oh, I also taught someone how to use Facebook.

I also put together this outfit as inspired by this Erté painting chose by Salazar for this week’s Style Imitating Art.

image Spring Rain

Originally I was thinking my green pants with my polka dot chambray shirt but then I remembered that today I have a meeting with some auditors at work and decided that green pants and chambray might be a bit too casual.

So, instead, I went with subtle pattern mixing with polka dots and stripes and brought in some purple and green in the cardigan and the necklace. I also tried to find some art deco architecture to stand in front of but, alas, I could only find Victorian.

First world problems, right?
