Things I’ve worn 100 times

I have this habit of wearing something 100 times right after I buy it because it’s foremost on my mind. Currently it’s either these flats or, since it’s gotten colder, these boots.

I enjoy buying shoes from Shopbop because they carry my two favorite brands: Sam Edelman and STEVEN. They even restocked my favorite Sam Edelman riding boots.

These jeans are also my favorite black jeans I’ve ever bought. Highly, highly recommended.

And, guess what? It’s all on sale, just in time for holiday shopping for yourself or someone else.

Sale ends 11:59 PM Pacific on Monday, 11/28

Last year during this sale I bought my leather cross-body tote bag. This year? I haven’t decided yet. I’m debating either another pair of the Sam Edelman flats because they are SUPER comfortable. Or maybe a pair of Sperry duck boots. Or maybe I’ll be generous and buy some Christmas gifts. Anything you want me to pick up for you?

Black and Navy [Pinterest Parallels Vol. 18]

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

A few weeks ago one of my blogging buddies shared an event on Facebook. For $60 you could get hair, makeup and two hours with professional photographers in a location not that far from my apartment. I’d never paid for professional photos for my blog before, but I thought this might be fun.

erin20_pp_pe

And it was! I was originally a bit stressed about what to wear because the location, Boutique Photo Loft, isn’t my normal aesthetic. However, the photographers had a plain white photo backdrop set up, too.  I decided this was a great chance to try out a black and navy outfit I’d saved on Pinterest.

I showed up to the venue after work with a suitcase full of clothes, shoes and accessories. The venue was in this old warehouse, on the third floor, behind a hidden door. I felt pretty ridiculous walking up and down the hallway over and over again trying to find it! Finally, I figured it out and went on in. After a short wait, it was time for make-up and hair. The artist asked if I wanted anything in particular and I said that I wanted my hair to have volume and my eyes to have drama. I’d say she delivered on both!

The photographer got some great shots and was pretty good at telling me where to put my hands, where to look, and how to angle my feet. I need that kind of direction because I never really know what to do. But, I did learn I’m much better at acting playful than I am at acting serious.

I had a fun time and would definitely do it again now that I’ve had the experience!

I have a few more photos to share of other outfits so those will be coming up in the next few weeks. Don’t want to overload you all at once 🙂

Also, in case you’re curious, I did actually wear this outfit to work. And later that week a coworker told me I should be nominated for the best dressed employee in our office. I’ll take that kind of compliment!

I wish that I could be like the cool kids

Casual Clothes

Don’t forget to vote. It’s what all the cool kids are doing.

My husband was out of town all day Saturday so I had this grand vision: I would take my laptop to the coolest coffee shop in what is arguably the coolest neighborhood in Chicago. I would get an Instagramable coffee and doughnut and set up my laptop and work.

Hahaha, yeah. I am not that cool.

The coffee shop was crazy busy. They were out of doughnuts. So, I got my coffee to go and instead went and bought running shoes and came home and worked on my couch.

On Sunday I wanted a re-do. I convinced Jason to walk to the coffee shop with me to get a doughnut AND bring the camera so we could take pictures by the awesome street art outside the place where all the cool kids hang out.

IMG_1156

Of course, Jason went to take the picture only to find out we’d left the camera battery at home. iPhone to the rescue!

And, sadly, they were out of doughnuts. Again.

So we went across the street to Bombobar.

But, seriously, you guys. I feel like I’m the nerdiest, least cool fashion blogger in Chicago. And, in the interest of full disclosure, sometimes I’m okay with that and other times I’m not.

And sometimes I just want a doughnut and a cup of coffee and a cool picture so I can pretend I’m cooler than I really am.

P.S. While we’re being honest, I suppose I should say I wore this outfit two days in a row and hadn’t washed my hair when we took these photos.  Yay for weekends!

Pinterest Parallels [Vol. 13]

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall · Pinterest Parallels

I think I’ve finally figure out when to wear skirts and sweaters. I think it’s this time of year called “fall.”

Don’t mind me, just a little slow on the uptake.

I’d pinned three outfits that paired camel colored leather skirts with black sweaters (this one, this one and this one) and decided to merge all of them together into this outfit that I wore on a day that started out cool and got a bit warmer in the afternoon.

Still not sure how I feel about ankle boots with skirts. Especially black ankle boots. Every time I wear them I feel self conscious all day. However, I think if I’d gone with flats this outfit would have been way too “school girl.” My husband even mentioned it looked like of a like a school uniform.

IMG_9788

But, really, do school girls wear faux leather skirts?

If you use Pinterest you know that it tells you when people have also “pinned” something you’ve pinned. Over the past few months I have two pins in particular that have exploded with being “re-pinned.” Both are outfits I saved as inspiration from other blogs and both are quite simple. So, I figured that today I’d show you one of them and how I decided to make it a reality with my wardrobe.

This pink gingham shirt, gray sweater, and black dress pants outfit as originally see on Outfit Posts isn’t that earth-shattering. I mean, I wear a sweater over a button-up at least once a week. In fact, I just wore this pink gingham shirt last week!

But, today, I paired it with a solid gray sweater and black jeans (instead of dress pants) as my homage to MK.

pink-gingham-shirt-gray-sweater-3At my previous job I would have rocked the dress pants and the heels. But at my current gig black jeans and booties felt more appropriate.

And looking at MK’s original outfit and my parallel I have to say the the wider leg dress pants really help balance out the layers on top. Also, I think her darker gray sweater helps with the color balance between the black pants and the pink. It’s a nicer transition than my lighter gray sweater. Admittedly, I tried this outfit with a darker gray sweater that I have but that one is a v-neck and I just wasn’t feeling the v-neck with the button up and a necklace.

Still, I clearly like the concept and it’s not one that too foreign to me. But trying to parallel the original outfit helps me figure out why some outfits work and some just miss the mark.

What are your thoughts on this particular parallel?

I swear it’s navy

Do you know the most difficult color to photograph? It’s navy. I swear it is.

jcrew-plaid-scarfIt’s the navy J. Crew Schoolboy blazer but it NEVER photographs as navy. I don’t know why!

I know, I know. First world problems. Other first world problems? I’m flying to Florida tomorrow to visit my dad and I haven’t packed or even thought about what to pack. Or what to wear on the plane. Or finished running all my errands.

I need a personal assistant.  Preferably one who can figure out how to photograph navy.

Then and Now [Vol. 1]

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter · Then and Now

As I mentioned in my December shopping (and gift) summary, my mom bought me a new pink blazer. I had a pink blazer from H&M but it always fit a little bit too small.  So, I decided that I would use my new pink blazer to kick off a new series that I’m calling “Then and Now”.

polka-dot-sweater-two-ways(original post)

What is “Then and Now”? My goal is to take an outfit that’s already been worn on the blog and show you how I’d wear it now and talk about what I changed and why.

I’d like to make this a weekly series, but I can’t promise anything right now. Regardless, I hope you like it!

So, on to this week’s “Then and Now” outfit.

pink-blazer-gray-polka-dots-1Sweater – Old Navy (similar) | Blazer – The Limited (similar) | Jeans – American Eagle (same) | Booties – Sam Edelman c/o Shopbop (same) | Necklace – Kohl’s (same)

pink-blazer-gray-polka-dots-2For this outfit I clearly swapped the old blazer for the new one and the pearl collar necklace for this teardrop multi-colored one. The regular blue jeans are swapped for black jeans with matching black booties to make it more streamlined on the bottom.

I never did care for the way those gray boots cut my leg off mid-calf so I was more than happy to go with the ankle boots instead. Overall, though, I think I liked this sweater with the pearls a bit more than with the teardrop necklace although I do like that the necklace has both pink and gray in it which ties the two pieces together.

So, what do you think? Do you prefer the “then” or the “now” versions?

Le Tote Leftovers

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

As I slowly recover from whatever stomach ailment I contracted while in Arizona, I’m very glad I had this photo from a few weeks ago before I sent back my last Le Tote shipment.

letote-arrow-blazer-2Blazer – Le Tote (same) | Shirt – Target (same) | Jeans – The Limited (similar) | Boots – H by Hudson c/o Shopbop (same)

letote-arrow-blazer-1I actually wore this blazer twice (first time here) and clearly I like to wear it with v-neck t-shirts. But unlike the last time I wore it, this time I wore it to work. I sort of liked the Western vibe I got from wearing these ankle boots with jeans over them instead of tucked inside. However, I wished I had black booties to wear that didn’t have a high heel. So, I ordered these from Shopbop.

I haven’t had a chance to wear them yet since they came right before I left for Arizona and right now my brain is in survival mode and not “put together a cute outfit” mode. In fact, I left work after a morning full of meetings so I could come home and sit on my couch with this face.

chewie_tongueSo, if I don’t have anything interesting to say right now it’s because my brain is mush due to illness and puppy cuddles. Fingers crossed I’m more interesting next week.

One Le Tote Sweater, Three Mediocre Outfits

Casual Clothes

One of the things I like about Le Tote is that I can add things to my closet that I wouldn’t normally purchase or even try on in store. Take, for example, those waterfall cardigans or whatever you want to call them. You know, the ones that are all flowy in the front and don’t button?

le-tote-cardigan-three-waysCardigan – Le Tote (same) | Jeans – American Eagle Outfitters (same) | Ankle Boots – H by Hudson c/o Shopbop (same) | Tee – Target (similar) | Necklace – Langford Market | Leggings – Old Navy (same) |Riding Boots – DSW (similar)

It looked so cute on the model and then on me I felt like I struggled with it all day. It kept falling off my shoulders, the front drapey part hit at a weird spot on my hips, the tag was on the bottom and kept showing. Etc, etc.

I tried it with the necklace but felt like the chunky ankle boots and the chunky necklace were fighting with each other.

Sans any accessories is how I wore it to work but, like I said, it annoyed me all day.

Then on the weekend I threw caution to the wind and wore it with leggings! Yes, leggings. Who am I and what have I done with Erin? Believe it or not, this was the look I liked the most. And, in fact, someone who had seen me in both the jeans and the leggings looks told me the sweater was cute and I should keep it.

But I’m not planning on it. Why? Because that’s the joy of borrowing something! You get to try it out and then return it. And if I find myself craving another try with a sweater of this type I’ll just request this one (or another one) again.

P.S. Another shill for the $650 Express giveaway and the Blogger Favorites Basket giveaway!

The Gray Ankle Boot Holy Grail

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

As I mentioned back when I wore floral and argyle together, I’ve been on the hunt for a great pair of gray booties. I fell in love with the Rag & Bone Harrow style but, alas, they were out of my price range. However! Thanks to my partnership with Shopbop I was able to save my gift certificates for this H by Hudson pair!

So these are now officially the second most expensive pair of shoes I own. And they are worth every penny. But, no worries if you can’t afford them yourself but want a pair of gray booties for yourself! I’ve put together a list of 9 pairs that range in price from under $30 to just under $300 with most being under $150.

Shopping for Gray Ankle Boots and Booties

Ankle booties are very “in” right now. Second only to riding boots, I would say. Of course, they don’t keep your ankles as warm as riding boots so don’t forget to wear socks with them! And if you’re not sure how to wear your skinny jeans with ankle boots, try rolling them at the ankle like I did in today’s outfit.

gray-hudson-ankle-bootsSpeaking of today’s outfit, I’m not in love with the top half. Every time I wear this vest I feel like Spongebob Square Pants. Except square and black and furry instead of square and yellow and porous.

plaid-shirt-faux-fur-vest-2No, I do not have kids. Yes, I still know words to the theme song.

Anyway! I do love faux fur vests but maybe I should look for a more fitted one? Or just accept the fact that this one, while soft and fuzzy and pocket-having, just doesn’t work for me and own it regardless.
