Be a unicorn

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

I think the official saying is that you should always be yourself. Unless you can be a unicorn. Then be a unicorn. But that’s kind of unwieldy for a blog post title, right? So, “be a unicorn” it is.img_9501.jpg

Being a unicorn is great when you’ve had a long day, your hair is a mess, and your make-up has worn off. Just put on your unicorn face and you’re good to go! It may be after Halloween but that’s okay. The unicorn “Donnie Darko” look is good all year round.

I mean, what else livens up an outfit full of neutral colors than a rainbow-maned unicorn head? Of course you need one of these in your life. It’s exactly what that saying is talking about. Be yourself. Wear those neutral colors. But every so often, don’t forget to be a unicorn.

This post may or may not have been brought to by wine. But it was definitely brought to you by a previous Sip & Shop event. You should join us at the next one so you too can be a unicorn!

Lake Effect Snow

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

I had a different post queued up for today…but then it snowed and I had to take advantage of it.

what to wear in the snow

Also, hooray for light after work! We shot these photos yesterday when I got home and let me just say, it was NOT sunny when I left for work. Nope. I made the 10 minute trek to the train in blizzarding snow wishing I had snowshoes. And then I watched from my office windows as it snowed sideways once I got to work.

Thankfully, I can wear this outfit in my office and no one cares that I’m basically wearing a sweatshirt and snow boots all day. The last thing I want to do when the weather is acting up is dress up!

Chewie loves playing in the snow and, now that we have a backyard, he’s all about running around, sticking his face in the snow, and acting like a total goofball. Man, he makes me laugh. It’s almost worth getting snow in March.

Out of the Woods [SIA Post]

Casual Clothes · Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter · Style Imitating Art

Not taking outfit photos for the past few months actually left me in a bit of an outfit rut. In fact, I struggled to come up with an outfit for this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge…even though I was the one who chose the art!

Georgia O'Keefe Pond in the Woods

Georgia O’Keeffe, Pond in the Woods

I had quite a few ideas, but I felt that many of them I’d either worn on the blog before or would just be me putting on something to take the photo and not something I would actually have a chance to wear any time soon.

For example, this dress would have been perfect…but I have no reason to wear it right now. I did decide while finally unpacking my jewelry that I wanted to wear my necklace with the green gemstone.

IMG_5478

So, I did. And I paired it with a cream-colored tank top, my burgundy cardigan, my newly DIY distressed black jeans (as in, I did it 20 minutes before I wore them), and my tan booties. I couldn’t figure out how to add purple or blue to this outfit, though. Plus, I’ve just been more of a fan of neutrals, lately. Or I’m wearing burgundy for Valentine’s Day. Either way!

Also, welcome to our backyard which, right now, is basically a mud pit. We’ve asked our landlord for help in landscaping it so that the dog doesn’t track muddy paw prints all over the house if we don’t wipe off his paws every single time he comes in from outside.

I’m still getting some great submissions from others who have been inspired to create an outfit based on this painting. And it’s not too late for you to submit yours! The round-up will be posted on Wednesday so send your pictures to looplooks@gmail.com to be featured!

Furry Cameo

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

With the return of Daylight Saving Time we also get the return of…..Chewie cameos!

Yes, now that I can take photos outside after work again you’ll be seeing quite a bit of my furry partner in crime.

Chewie is super smart and has learned that when we get the camera out it means that he gets to go outside. He doesn’t always cooperate during the photoshoots but overall he’s pretty good.

IMG_6566

Plus, the roof of our apartment building is currently undergoing some major construction which means no rooftop photos for the time being. And when there are going to be courtyard photos instead it definitely means Chewie gets to come. He wouldn’t have it any other way.

IMG_6556

By the way, my husband starts (yet another) new job this week and we’ve re-signed our lease to stay in our current apartment for at least another year. So hopefully we’ll be here when the roof is finished so that I can get some more photos with the Chicago skyline in the background!

Also, shoutout to my friend Bethany who is starting a new job this week, too! She needed an almost entirely new wardrobe due to a new dress code so I took her shopping a few weeks ago. She was less than thrilled to have to buy new clothes so I tried to make it as easy as possible for her. If you hate clothes shopping I’m more than happy to have you follow me around the store while I hand things to you to try on. Sort of like your own personal shopper but with less pressure to purchase anything!

A different pop of green

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

It’s been all about green here on the blog lately so here’s an outfit without any green in it. I mean, it’s surrounded by green, but the outfit itself is mostly gray.

Yes, these are the last of my photos from the Garfield Park Conservatory. For now, anyway, I definitely want to go back in the summer and get some outdoor photos, too!

IMG_6377

And, in case you needed it, here’s some proof that I actually wore this outfit to wander around the conservatory. Sans jacket, of course. I think I mentioned it was warm in there!

I also wore this outfit to work. I like this moto jacket because it functions more like a blazer than a jacket. This way I can wear it over something but still take it off and have a complete outfit underneath. In this case I kept the outfit simple with just my watch as my jewelry. In the past, though, I’ve also paired it with pearls, pink, and professional looks.

A Tweedy Decision

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. If you go to the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago do NOT wear a sweater plus a jacket. You will get incredibly warm. Clearly I am not the brightest crayon in the box since it didn’t occur to me that what is essentially a greenhouse would be way warmer than the outside temperature. Especially since they’re keeping tropical plants alive all year round.

Thankfully I was only recreating this outfit and not wearing it the whole time. I did wear it the whole time to work and out to dinner with friends a few days prior, though.

IMG_6313

I’ve been trying to come up with more ways to wear this particular jacket. I go back and forth on whether or not it still has a home in my closet. It’s black, navy, white, gold and silver so, really, it should go with just about everything I own! But for some reason I rarely reach for it.

IMG_6321

A friend of mine just got a new job and is going from a super-casual workplace to a “smart casual” workplace. Basically, the complete opposite of what I did. I’m giving her a bunch of clothes from my closet to try on since she needs them more than I do. For now, though, I think this jacket is going to stay in my closet. I think I’ll give it at least one more season before I make a final decision on its future.

Beer Me

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

We’re having really warm weather in Chicago this week but back when it wasn’t so warm I needed some layers! Bring on the vests, I say. And the turtlenecks. And the boots. And the stairwell that hopefully you won’t need to see for much longer since Daylight Saving Time starts on Sunday!

IMG_6271

Vest – Groopdealz (similar) | Turtleneck – Express (similar) | Pants – Old Navy (same) | Boots – Sam Edelman c/o Shopbop (same) | Earrings – The Limited (similar) | Beer – Sam Adams

I go back and forth between beer and wine. I like to have something when I get home from work and while I’m making dinner. I’m also easily suggestible when it comes to what to drink. Take this “prop” for instance. I saw a guy on the elevator one day with an assorted pack of seasonal Sam Adams beer so I bought it the next time I was the store.

IMG_6279

Right now I’m on a red wine kick. But, as warmer weather gets closer I might move back to beer.  We’ll see.

Oh, and because it’s not a stairwell photo shoot without a Chewie cameo, here you go.

Leap Year Red and Green

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

When I picked the “Leap Year Frog” painting for my Style Imitating Art choice I fully admit I already had an outfit picked out and photographed that I knew would fit my choice perfectly.

A few weeks ago Jason and I went to the Garfield Park Conservatory to get out of the Chicago cold and take some photos. Neither of us had been there before so it was also a fun afternoon of exploring. I took a bag full of outfits I’d already worn to work with the goal of recreating them among the flowers and plants.

I actually got the idea for this outfit from Cotton, Cashmere & Cat Hair and I thought that photographing my version with a green background versus her white, snowy background would make for a fun change.

As for how this goes with my Style Imitating Art painting choice, well, the red is pretty clear and the green comes in with the background. Plus, I took these photos in the tropical sections of the Conservatory. Frogs live in the tropics, right?

Favorite Outfit of February

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

At least one of you said that you liked my little list last month of stuff I did during the month. So, here it is again!

In February, I:

  • Traveled to Tampa
  • Ran my fastest half marathon ever
  • Won enough money to cover my drinks at the horse racing track and come home with $4
  • Participated in my first paid in-person focus group (about grocery shopping and store brands)
  • Tried two new-to-me restaurants (RPM Steak and Forno Rosso)
  • Met a ton of Chicago foodie Instagrammers at an event at Fremont
  • Visited the Garfield Park Conservatory for the first time
  • Published 21 blog posts!
  • Continued to lift literal tons of weight at the gym
  • Became the VP of Education for my work’s Toastmasters club
  • And, of course, worked my regular day job

So, while I was doing all of that, what outfit was my favorite? Actually, I think it was one that’s pretty much a throwback to how I used to dress.

IMG_5841

When I dress like this I still feel powerful and professional. Plus, it was nice to bust out some color in what is generally a fairly dreary month.

But, enough about me. I want to know what YOU think! Which of the outfits below was your favorite in February?

Red and Fabulous

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

I’m writing this post while sitting in the airport on my way back to Chicago from Tampa. Let me tell you, as hard as it was to leave the 80 degrees, sunshine and amazingly low humidity, I’m looking forward to seeing this face. And my husband, of course.

In the meantime, I’m happy I have a backlog of outfit photos to share. I wore the outfit below to work on one of the randomly warm days we’ve had this winter. Although, to be honest, I did wear my Uggs during my commute.

IMG_5841

IMG_5850

I really, really liked this outfit and debated keeping this top. I used to have a similar one that I wore in a similar outfit years ago that I got rid of because it was just too billowy. This one from Le Tote was almost perfect in many ways, but it ended up being a tad too short. It looks great in the photos but if I lifted my arms it rode halfway up my torso.

Still, when I wore this outfit to work our internal systems project manager told me that I always look amazing. Although, let’s be honest. It’s not that difficult to do in our office. And as much as I like being able to wear jeans, sometimes you’ve just got to wear your bright red pants and look fabulous.
