Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring · Style Imitating Art

Last week’s Style Imitating Art choice by Salazar was a lovely 19th century painting featuring two young girls, loads of greenery, and spring flowers. I immediately knew I wanted to wear something pink. So what’s better than a pink dress?

I wore this last week on one of our random warm days. And then it got cold again. It’s that stupid time of year when summer is so close you can taste it but it’s not quite here. It makes me grumpy.

Actually, to be honest, I’m kind of grumpy right now anyway. I’m super busy at work and while I enjoy being busy, honestly, I’m not used to it!

Maybe that’s why at dinner on Saturday night I got feisty on social media with a local restaurant, Nellcote. We had 8PM reservations but when we still hadn’t been seated, our coats taken, or even offered a drink by 8:30 PM I started tweeting at them. Guess what? We ended up getting free Prosecco and a seat in the lounge while we waited. Still, while I’m impressed with their responsiveness (well, kind of. I had to tweet at them several times) I’m less than impressed that it took me being passive aggressive instead of them just having their act together. I think from now on I’ll stick to their $10 beer & pizza happy hour and avoid them on Saturday nights.

Anyway, if you want to see how other people interpreted this painting and maybe read someone less grumpy, head over to Salazar’s blog and see what we all came up with!

Red shell top with denim jacket, white jeans, and leopard print flats

Twice as nice

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

As I mentioned on Monday, this past weekend I went to brunch at a restaurant in my neighborhood (thus accomplishing at least one of April’s goals). I met Sarah from Windy City Wanderlust at The Publican where we had some tasty eats. I’ll let her blog about the food so be sure to follow her blog so you can find out more!

Anyway, we then wandered over to the Randolph Street Market and on the way we stopped to take some outfit photos. Of course, I always forget to check the settings after Jason uses the camera and this time was no exception. So, sadly, I had it on manual instead of automatic. Which meant that the background is perfectly in focus but the foreground (i.e. me) was not.

However, I liked this outfit so much that I recreated it to try again. And, it’s not really cheating because I did wear it twice last week!

Plus this time you get bonus Chewie cameos!

Anyway, when I wore this outfit to work I showed up to a meeting and the first comment was “Wow! You look spring-y!” Well, I suppose that’s appropriate since it’s spring and all.

Inspired by a blogger

Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

When you’re trying to come up with what to wear what do you do? Well, if you’re me, you turn to one of your favorite bloggers: Jen!

She wore her olive green pants with an adorable printed top, a gray cardigan, and her brogues. I thought about wearing one of my striped tops to echo the eyeglasses print of her shirt, but in the end I went with plain white and a necklace.

I’ve been thinking about replacing my black and white striped short sleeve tee. I’ve had it for years and I think I want something with a slightly thinner stripe and that fits a bit more loosely. Is it silly to want to replace a perfectly functional piece of clothing because your tastes change, though?

IMG_8039

Oh, random tangent – do you watch Chicago PD? If so, you might occasionally recognize my neighborhood! Two weeks ago they were filming inside the physical therapy office that’s less than half a block from where I took these photos! Chicago Fire used to film in the building next door to my apartment, too. I’ve yet to see any of the stars of the show but I do see the film trucks!

Just one of the many reasons I love my neighborhood. Other reasons include the dog parks, the restaurants, and the ability to walk so many places. Like the dentist. Which is where I went while wearing this outfit. I lead an exciting life, right?

The almost perfect gray jacket

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

I’m always on the lookout for jackets or blazers or what have you that can elevate a casual look from super casual weekend to less causal work but still be comfy.

I thought I’d found it with this jersey fabric jacket from Le Tote and, while it looks awesome in the photos, it has some weird shoulder pads going on that seem to be making my shoulders look really broad.

IMG_7031

The shoulder pads seem to be part of the design and structure of the jacket, though, so it’s not like I could just snip them out.  Which is too bad because this jacket is super comfy, has pockets, three-quarter sleeves (my favorite!) and is otherwise perfect. In terms of comfort level It’s more like a sweatshirt than a jacket and that’s a-okay by me.

Actually, to be honest, I’ve noticed that I’ve been feeling like a marshmallow on toothpicks lately. I have to wonder if my shoulders are actually getting broader or if it’s my imagination! I mean, I have no problem with them getting broader but it does mean I might have to rethink some of what I wear.

Or not. I’m still undecided.

SIA: Tiffany Glass

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring · Style Imitating Art

If I was a good little blogger I would have actually gone to the Chicago Cultural Center and taken today’s blog photos underneath the Tiffany glass dome that inspired them. However, I am not that good of a blogger so instead you get photos that we took right before we left town for the weekend.

IMG_7075

I chose this top because I thought both the colors and the pattern did a nice job echoing the colors and the idea of the stained glass window. I chose these shoes because I liked that the embellishment on the toe was reminiscent of the figures of the zodiac inlaid in the dome.

I wish I had been able to make to the Chicago Cultural Center and get some photos, though. But with my husband working in the suburbs, the only time we would have been able to go would have been on a weekend. And considering this past weekend consisted of a whirlwind trip to Indiana so I could run a race and Jason could race his car, well, it just wasn’t going to happen.

Trust me when I say I certainly don’t plan my life around my blog!

Speaking of which, I’m writing this post at 9PM on Sunday night which means it’s almost my bedtime. And after this weekend I definitely need my beauty sleep!

The Best View in Chicago

Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

I’ve lived and/or worked in Chicago for almost 8 years and yet, in all that time, I’d yet to take advantage of what some call the best view in Chicago: the observation deck of the Hancock Building.

IMG_6553

I can see my office from here!

Recently revamped as 360 Chicago, the observation deck is starting to host a ton of great events to get more than tourists to come check it out. In fact, if your zip code starts with 606, you can get tickets to the deck for only $10 until the end of the year!

Plus, they have a bar and a small cafe up there, not to mention Tilt!

IMG_6555

Yeah, this mechanism actually tilts you out over the roof of Water Tower mall from over 1,000 feet high! Trust me, it’s not as scary as it seems. Especially once you’ve had a little wine.

IMG_6865

Jacket – Forever 21 (similar) | Dress – Neiman Marcus Outlet (similar) | Shoes – Kate Spade c/o Shopbop (similar) | Necklace – The Limited (similar)

Oh, they also have an awesome sunset series where they have special events starting at 6:00 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Monday nights you can bring your tripod to take photos, something that’s strictly forbidden the rest of the time.

IMG_6845

On Tuesdays they have Chicago Architecture Foundation docents talking about the buildings you can see in all directions.

IMG_6550

All I can tell you is that there’s the beach where I trained for my triathlon last summer

And on Thursdays they have DJs and drink specials. In fact, in May they’re serving a drink called The Yellow Ribbon where part of the proceeds go to ChicagoVets.org.

IMG_6873

You can also view the Wednesday and Saturday Navy Pier fireworks, the Air and Water Show, and much more! I had no idea, which is why I was happy to attend their media preview event. Jason is already planning to go back for a Tripod Monday night and I am pretty sure I’ll go with. Because for $10, why not? And the view will be a little different every time thanks to Chicago’s weather, I’m sure.

End of an Era

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

I got some sad news via email today. The Le Tote ambassador program is being discontinued! As an ambassador I got some nice perks just for doing what I was already doing: telling you how much I love Le Tote. I’ll still keep using Le Tote but I’ll have to rely on people using my referral link.

Anyway, speaking of Le Tote, today’s outfit features a striped blazer I got in my last Tote.

IMG_6748

Blazer – Le Tote (same) |  Camisole – The Limited (similar) | Jeans – American Eagle Outfitters (similar) | Shoes – J. Crew Factory (similar

I really wanted to like this blazer. It’s cotton-y and comfy and I would like a striped blazer to replace a navy and white one I consigned awhile ago. However, for some reason I just wasn’t feeling this one.

IMG_6755

But, again, that’s what I love about Le Tote. I got to wear this all day and then make my decision about whether or not to keep it. And, if I decide later that I want to try it again, I can do that.

So, even though I will no longer be an official Le Tote ambassador, I’m still going to use them and share about them here on the blog. And that’s how you know that something is good, right? I get no perks for telling you about it but I do anyway.

Favorite Outfit of March

Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

So, March is over and I feel like I didn’t accomplish very much. But, since one of my March goals was to not overschedule myself, I suppose that’s to be expected.

What did I do in March?

  • Learned how to make some new cocktails with Femme du Coupe while raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
  • Tried Lyfe Kitchen for the first time
  • Tried Shake Shack for the first time
  • Participated in a user experience study for the Illinois Sunshine website
  • Made a pie with my mom (more on that tomorrow)
  • Ran a Pi Day 5K fun run with friends
  • Attended my first Idea Potluck
  • Learned proper kettlebell form at OTG Bootcamp with Personally Paleo
  • Visited the Goose Island Tap Room for the first time to say goodbye to some friends who moved to North Carolina (and drink beer)
  • Visited the Lagunitas Tap Room for the first time to hang with my running club (and drink beer)
  • Started a new weight lifting program
  • Wrote 20 blog posts
  • Ramped up the email sending and marketing for the Good Life Race
  • Started studying for the NSCA exam (more on that tomorrow, too)
  • Helped a friend shop for a new wardrobe
  • Worked my day job
  • Taught Chewie how to shake
  • Celebrated my husband getting a new job with dinner at Saigon Sisters
  • Got interviewed by Jen for her librarian style spotlight which is live today!

Although, when I write it all out like that, it seems like I was super busy!

And, like usual, in between all of that I had to figure out what to wear. So, without further ado, here’s my pick for my favorite outfit from March. And, like usual, you can vote for yours below!

IMG_6271

Nothing really earth-shattering about this outfit, but this vest always makes me feel good. That’s really all.

So, let’s move on. What was YOUR favorite outfit from March?

SIA: A different version of red, white and blue

Casual Clothes · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring · Style Imitating Art

Last week we saw the Turkish textile pattern that Jen chose for this week’s Style Imitating Art.  I fully admit that I struggled a a bit with coming up with an outfit. I don’t have much in the way of florals, I don’t own anything paisley, and I think it’s just a tad too early in the year to dress in colors I associate with the Fourth of July.

Still, I think I managed to put together something that fits the bill.

I kept most of my blues in the denim family and added the bright blue with just my shoes. Jen had also written that dots were a motif that was common in these textiles so that’s the pattern I chose. Plus, the top is red and white which goes with the fabric she chose.

Want to see how other people interpreted this week’s prompt? Check out Jen’s blog tomorrow!

In other news, I did a really fun interview with Sherry of Save, Spend Splurge that you can read here. She asked me about my clothing budget, how I learned about spending and saving money, and a variety of other topics. Plus, reading her editor’s comments is always a good time!

Furry Cameo

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall · Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

With the return of Daylight Saving Time we also get the return of…..Chewie cameos!

Yes, now that I can take photos outside after work again you’ll be seeing quite a bit of my furry partner in crime.

IMG_6540

Sweater – Le Tote (same) | Jeans – Old Navy (similar) | Boots – Sam Edelman c/o Shopbop (same) | Earrings – Poshmark (similar

Chewie is super smart and has learned that when we get the camera out it means that he gets to go outside. He doesn’t always cooperate during the photoshoots but overall he’s pretty good.

IMG_6566

Plus, the roof of our apartment building is currently undergoing some major construction which means no rooftop photos for the time being. And when there are going to be courtyard photos instead it definitely means Chewie gets to come. He wouldn’t have it any other way.

IMG_6556

By the way, my husband starts (yet another) new job this week and we’ve re-signed our lease to stay in our current apartment for at least another year. So hopefully we’ll be here when the roof is finished so that I can get some more photos with the Chicago skyline in the background!

Also, shoutout to my friend Bethany who is starting a new job this week, too! She needed an almost entirely new wardrobe due to a new dress code so I took her shopping a few weeks ago. She was less than thrilled to have to buy new clothes so I tried to make it as easy as possible for her. If you hate clothes shopping I’m more than happy to have you follow me around the store while I hand things to you to try on. Sort of like your own personal shopper but with less pressure to purchase anything!
