Then and Now [Vol. 4]

Viagra and clonidine · Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter · Then and Now

Happy Friday!!! Who’s excited for the weekend? So far my weekend plans involve celebrating Pi Day with a 10 mile run (that includes a 3.14 mile fun run followed by PIE!) and possibly my first long bike ride of the season. Oh, and things like laundry. But those aren’t as fun as pie.

A few weeks ago, before our weather warmed up a bit, I put together this double polka dot look with my navy polka dot sweater and my polka dot button up.

I love pairing polka dots with polka dots and I’ve definitely done  before with this polka dot shirt, specifically.

polka-dot-shirt-three-waysOriginal 1 | Original 2

The polka dot shirt with the polka dot skirt is still one of my favorite outfits I’ve ever put together, to be honest. The gray sweater and polka dot shirt is cute but something about a long sleeved button up under a shorts sleeved sweater has always bothered me for some reason. Which means, of course, that I prefer the longer sleeved sweater.

What do you think about putting polka dots together? Do you prefer one of these outfits more than the other?

Last week we had a really interesting discussion about camo print pants. Many of you said you felt the same way I did and were excited to see how I would style them in the future.

Well, the future is now because here’s another outfit with my camo print jeans!

camo-jeans-gray-vest-1Jeans – LOFT (same) | Shirt – J. Crew Factory (similar) | Vest – Gap (similar) | Necklace – c/o Rocksbox (use code looplooksxoxo for a free month!*) | Shoes – c/o Shopbop (same)

camo-jeans-gray-vest-3Rocksbox gave me three month trial of their service so I could try it out and tell you guys about it. I’ve already worn everything they sent me in my first box and am looking forward to my next one!

Yes, Rocksbox is one of those services, similar to Le Tote, where you pay a monthly fee to borrow designer items. Whereas Le Tote is for both clothes and jewelry, Rocksbox is just jewelry. And so far they hit my style spot-on. You get three pieces and they can pick from your wish list or they can use your wish list to send you items they think you’d like. I’ll show you the other two items tomorrow!

And, yes, you can buy the pieces or you can just wear ’em, send ’em back, and get new ones!

camo-jeans-gray-vest-2I thought this necklace was perfect for adding a little bit of shine and femininity to an otherwise casual outfit. I wore this particular outfit to run a ton of errands over the weekend (Goodwill, Home Depot, grocery store, Target) and now I want to wear it too work. Too bad I already sent back my Rocksbox and I’ll have to wear something out of my own jewelry box that I probably won’t like nearly as much.

I still really like the outfit, though. Very comfy and practical. I also like how the gray works with the more muted camo print and keeps it all very neutral.

What do you think? Which camo print outfit do you prefer so far?

Chicago finally thawed out this weekend so now it’s rain boots and slightly lighter jackets. Before all the snow melted, though, it was definitely still heavy duty winter boots season. Especially when you take the dog to the dog park.

This outfit may not be the most interesting, the most put-together, or the most fashion forward. In fact, it’s kind of frumpy and schlubby. However, it IS functional. I had on a long-sleeved top underneath the sweater and leggings under my jeans and BAM I’m perfectly comfy to stand outside while my dog plays.

And, to be honest, I really liked this outfit. Sure, I could have worn jeans and a hoodie, but I’m actually more uncomfortable when I dress like that. So, sweater and scarf it is.

Conflicted about camo

Viagra and clonidine · Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

Is there anything in your life that you like but you feel bad about liking? I feel that way about camo print. I love the way it looks but I feel so disingenuous wearing it. Like, the only people who should wear it are those in the military or who are military veterans.

But, it’s also just a fun print!

camo-jeans-marsala-sweater-3I admit that I bought these jeans on sale in January and last week was the first time I wore them. And I felt both awesome and self conscious all day. Of course, it did help that there was another girl at work also wearing camo print jeans so I didn’t feel totally out of place.

I have lots of ideas on how to wear them so hopefully I get over my weird hang-up and just admit that it’s a print. I mean, people wear plaid who aren’t Scottish, right?

A few weeks ago Garnet Hill emailed me to see if I would be interested in trying something from their Cashmere Shop. I admit I was intrigued because growing up we used to get the Garnet Hill catalog and I remember it being mostly bedding and linens. Either I totally missed their clothing section or they’ve just been expanding since the last time I looked!

As you saw in yesterday’s shopping summary post, I ended up getting a beautiful striped cashmere sweater from them.

garnet-hill-striped-sweater-2Sweater – c/o Garnet Hill (same) | Jeans – American Eagle Outfitters (same) | Boots – Sorel (similar) | Scarf – The Limited (similar)

Originally I wasn’t sure what size to order. I was debating between an XS and an S. In the end, I went with the small and I would say it fits true to size. None of this crazy vanity sizing that other places do. I wanted it to fit a little looser so I could layer it and so it would feel more casual. The S is perfect for that. If I wanted an even more oversized fit I could easily go up to a Medium.

I love that it has three quarter length sleeves (my favorite!) and that the boat neck isn’t super wide.

garnet-hill-striped-sweater-3I kind of took a chance on ordering the navy and white version because there’s no picture of it on the website. Thankfully it looked how I expected.

The only downside? What do I do with a cashmere sweater?? Garnet Hill has care suggestions but, dang, cashmere seems like it might be a lot of work. On the plus side, it’s super soft and cozy.

I kept the outfit simple on its first outing (although, when I wore it to work I swapped out the boots for my navy suede heels once I got to the office) but since I’m pretty sure we’re not getting spring for a few more weeks I’ll most likely be layering it over a button up shirt pretty soon.

garnet-hill-striped-sweater-1Thanks to Garnet Hill for sending me this sweater! As always, all opinions are my own.

Last Wednesday Jason had the day off work so I took the day off as well so we could go to the Chicago Auto Show. In the past we’ve gone on the weekends and, let me tell you, it was SO much nicer to go during the week. The Chicago Auto Show is the largest auto show in the United States so I’m sure you can imagine that it gets crowded on the weekends.

Of course, while my husband was photographing all the pretty cars I made him take a few photos of my outfit as well.

When you go to the auto show the key is to park in Lot C (which is underground!) so you can leave your coat in the car. However, even though you’re walking indoors the whole time the parking garage can get chilly. Hence the vest and the scarf.

I got hot partway through the morning so the scarf came off. But when I got chilly again after lunch I just popped the scarf back on and I was fine.

Layers, people. They work.

Also, as we were leaving our apartment Jason looked at my shoes and said “Are those going to be comfortable for walking around?” Let me tell you; these TOMS wedges? Even more comfortable than my sneakers. I know. I walked dogs at PAWS on Sunday morning in sneakers and my legs were killing me!

Anyway, this outfit also does a great job of incorporating many of the elements of the Style Interpreting Art pick that Salazar chose to celebrate Vietnamese New Year. I’ve got green, brown, red, black and the texture of my vest echoes the texture of the fish in the art.

Oh, and I’ve got a new car.

herringbone-vest-blanket-scarf-2Hahaha, just kidding. Although, I did see a few I wouldn’t mind owning. Time to go play the lottery!

Pinterest Parallels [Vol. 4]

Originally the only plans Jason and I had for Valentine’s Day were to sit on the couch, order a pizza, and watch Netflix. Yeah, we’re pretty awesome.

But then my brother invited us out to dinner with him, his girlfriend, my sister and her husband. Oh, and by the way, it was like -15 with the windchill. Time to layer!

I scoured Pinterest for an outfit idea that would allow me to wear as many clothes as possible and landed on this burgundy sweater, gray scarf, and jeans outfit from Swank and Dapper.

I’ll have you know that under my cardigan I had on a tank top and a long sleeved top. Under my jeans I had on a pair of leggings. And of course I was wearing wool socks.

burgundy-sweater-gray-scarf-1All of that so that we could take a cab from our place to our parents’ place to meet up with everyone and then take another cab from there to FatPour.  By the way, if you like beer then you should definitely put FatPour on your list. Also, the appetizers were amazing and those who got tacos enjoyed them. Jason and I had burgers but weren’t that impressed. I’m still thinking about the fried cheese curds and the pretzel sticks, though.

By the way, Chewie did not want us to leave and was doing his best to get in all the photos.

Notes: cardigan is from January 2013 and the scarf was a gift last year. Jeans and boots are from fall 2014.

Although Jason and I had to fly to Arizona last week for a not-so-fun reason, I have to admit that I was a bit loathe to return to Chicago. Why? Well, for one, the views are amazing. The other? It was in the 50s! I was able to wear this outfit without a coat!

chambray-shirt-black-jeans-2Scarf – J. Crew Factory (similar) | Shirt – LOFT (same) | Jeans – American Eagle Outfitters (same) | Shoes – H by Hudson c/o Shopbop (same)

chambray-shirt-black-jeans-1I actually wore this outfit on the plane. I always bring a scarf in case it’s cold and these boots are perfect for plane travel because they slip on and off easily. This shirt is really, really soft and the jeans fit me well.

I also felt like I fit right in while in Flagstaff. It’s not a very fancy town so plaid, chambray, jeans and boots are all perfect for the casual, rustic, rural vibe.

Do you have a typical go-to travel outfit?

Weekend Wear

Viagra and clonidine · Style Imitating Art

On Saturday Jason and I actually had time to run errands, enjoy lunch out AND take Chewie to the dog park. Plus, it was warm enough for a lot of the day that I didn’t have to wear a coat. Instead, I wore my white blazer with a scarf and my current favorite graphic tee.

white-blazer-graphic-tee-1Blazer – Forever 21 (similar) | Tee – Megan Lee Designs (same) | Jeans – American Eagle Outfitters (same) | Booties – Sam Edelman c/o Shopbop (same) | Scarf – J. Crew Factory (similar)

One of our errands was checking out two furniture stores. We’re thinking about getting a new bed and want to find this one since it has so much storage in it! Unfortunately, while we can order it, we haven’t found a place in the city that has it in stock so we can see it in person.

However, while we were at one of the furniture stores I realized we were minutes away from Bad Apple and decided that I wanted one of their amazing burgers. Excellent lunch decision.

Then it was off to the grocery store and then home to change in order to take Chewie to the park. I’m pretty brave but not brave enough to wear white and be surrounded by pups!

Also, it occurred to me that although I didn’t set out to create this outfit as part of this week’s Style Imitating Art it kind of does. My scarf and the heart on the tee both echo the color of the accents and the gray background of my top stands in for the silver. Also, you hardly ever seen jewelry photographed on a white background like that (I feel like it’s usually black) so I think my white blazer helps the rest of the outfit stand out, just like the photo background.

What to wear to Green Street Meats

Viagra and clonidine

Last week Jason randomly said, “Let’s go out for dinner!” Never mind that it was one of the coldest nights of the year. When Jason suggests leaving the house of his own accord I’m not going to argue (my husband is a bit of a homebody).

So, we bundled up and walked up the street to try Green Street Meats. I’d been told by several people that we should try it so off we went.

FYI – If you want to fit in at Green Street Meats, wear plaid.

plaid-shirt-snow-boots-1Cardigan – Old Navy (similar) | Shirt – J. Crew (similar) | Jeans – American Eagle Outfitters (same) | Boots – Sorel (this year’s version) | Necklace – VO Jewelry (same)

plaid-shirt-snow-boots-2Necklace made out of a bullet casing is optional.

Beards and skinny jeans are also haute couture at Green Street. It’s definitely got a laid back hipster vibe to it. But dang good food! A little pricey but if you want no frills and just tasty meat then this is the place for it.

Or just go for a drink. They have a pretty awesome bar, too.

Anyway, today I’m on a plane to Florida so the snow boots are staying home. I’ll be back on Monday night, though, so they won’t be lonely for too long.

P.S. If you have suggestions of things to do in Tampa, I’m all ears!
