This post is both simultaneously difficult to write and a relief to write.
You see, I need to take a blogging break.
I didn’t want to be someone who did a big dramatic “my blog is ending” post, but it feels disingenuous to just….stop. Especially as one of the Style Imitating Art hosts!
So, instead, I decided to host one last time before I walk away for a bit. Therefore, I chose a piece that appropriately has the word “farewell” in the title.
This Ming Dynasty era scroll, titled “Farewell at the Bridge of the Hanging Rainbow” comes with an interesting story and a translation of the inscription.
The inscription reads as:
The willow crackles now, its earlier
green bitten by the frost;
Like a rainbow on the water, the
reflected bridge hangs down.
Drinking deeply we feel the sorrow of our
Tomorrow our paths will part—yours to the
west, mine to the east.
Your laughter will be gone, and we,
reminded, ungrateful for full moons;
Sticking to fair winds, your journey
will be safe and sound.
Back home you will talk of how you passed the time,
Until the candle on the stand has burned its wick away.
Why am I parting ways from blogging? Lots of reasons. None of them are dire, though, so don’t worry about me! To be honest, I started blogging when I needed a creative outlet. When I didn’t feel useful at work. But, over the years my job and career have changed and currently I actually feel useful, productive, and even creative at work.
Blogging feels like something I HAVE to do now, instead of something I WANT to do. I don’t make money off this little blog. I don’t even make enough to cover the hosting costs, if we’re honest. Sure, I could hustle harder, invest more, hire a photographer, learn Photoshop, keep up with every technology and trend advance, spend my free time commenting on other blogs and trying to drum up engagement, but I don’t want to do that.
What I want to do is write and share my life….when I feel like it. But, I’m not sure what that looks like right now. I have ideas for posts but I don’t have the desire right now to turn them into something. I need to walk away so that I don’t feel this pressure that every posts needs to fit some mold. That every post needs to have perfect pictures and search engine optimization words and monetization links. Basically, I need to figure out how to write for ME and not for this “someone else” who lives in the back of my head and encourages me to play the comparison game.
So, for now, I hope you’ll join me in celebrating my last time hosting the Style Imitating Art challenge by using the artwork above to inspire an outfit, taking a picture, and sending it to me at email@example.com by Tuesday, April 3rd. I will post the round-up on Wednesday, April 4th and we’ll have a little party. Sound good?
