Outfit for Sale

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall · Shopping

This past weekend everyone in Chicago was talking about the weather. We had some 90+ degree days which makes it hard for those of us who are tired of our summer clothes to bust out our fall layers. Thankfully, I was able to do so a few weeks ago and snap a photo of what will probably be my go-to fall outfit.

A few things to note. One, our neighbors got new siding on their house so it no longer looks like it’s falling apart. And two, basically my whole outfit is currently on sale at Shopbop.

This jacket is probably one of the best items I’ve ever purchased. I wear it ALL the time (well, when the weather allows) and the cost-per-wear now is so low. If you’ve been looking for an olive jacket, I highly recommend this one.

In other news, this past weekend Jason and I got to be extras in a film one of my coworkers is making. Then on Sunday I went and watched Jason and Annabelle at an autocross event. Yes, we did all of that in those ridiculously high temperatures!

Which means I’ll be more than happy when the weather changes and I can wear this outfit again without sweating all the way through it.

Violet, grey, and tan [SIA Post]

A few weekends ago I was at the Chicago Northside Pop-Up Bazaar and fell in love with this skirt and top combo. I’d seen them in the shop before but I finally pulled the trigger and made them mine. And then it turned out that they were the perfect pieces to wear for this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge.

Also, how perfect is this photo background? We discovered it while looking for somewhere fun to take photos. When Annabelle (my friend & photog for this outfit) said it would be neat if we could be coming out of the door for photos, I turned the handle and discovered that it was unlocked!

IMG_5249

Don’t worry! We didn’t walk into someone’s apartment. It’s the storage garage that belongs to Annabelle’s landlord. But, hey, if you need a ladder, now we know where to find one.

If you need a pencil skirt to make you feel more professional but you hate that they can feel restricting, these pencil skirts sold by Belle on the Roe are perfect. They’re super stretchy but not so form-fitting that you feel indecent. They also come in tons of fun patterns. I highly recommend you check them out in her shop. Not in Chicago? That’s fine! You can schedule a virtual shopping session with her and she’ll text you pictures of her inventory or do it via FaceTime. For reference, I’m wearing a size small in both the skirt and the top.

Speaking of Annabelle, here’s a bonus shot of her that also fits this week’s Style Imitating Art theme! Don’t you love her pale pink skirt?

Don’t forget to visit Salazar’s blog on Wednesday for the full-round up of all of this week’s outfits.

Variations in Violet and Grey [SIA Post]

Style Imitating Art

This week our Style Imitating Art picture is a bit more abstract than our last one. This week Salazar chose “Variations in Violet and Grey”, a watercolor by James McNeill Whistler:

The title of this painting has the word ‘violet’ in it, which I always think of as more of a purple. But, at least on my computer screen, this seems more like tan and blue. Still, I think I have the perfect skirt to wear!

How about you? Does this painting give you any ideas about what to wear? If so, snap a picture of your outfit and send it to 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by Monday, September 25th.

How we all take our coffee [SIA Post]

Style Imitating Art

This week’s Style Imitating Art challenge was super fun because I got to see a side of some people I don’t usually! It was almost like having coffee with them. Appropriate since this week’s art was all about coffee!

IMG_9340

We also have giveaway winners listed at the bottom of the post. But first, let’s see how everyone  took this week’s coffee.

Mike submitted some great photos and I chose my favorite of the bunch. He wrote, “I went all neutral (no black at all this time; a rarity for me) for this one with my cream colored sweater and khaki pants to mimic the color of the coffee cup. And the buttons on my sweater fit perfectly for the mimicking of the coffee beans that are shown on the side of the cup!”

Mike also tells me that he takes his coffee fairly dark, with a little cream, and two packs of sugar. Good to know!

Next we have co-host Jen who is also showing us her coffee corner! As well as her outfit that has all the colors in the painting.

Clearly co-host Salazar and I were on the same wave-length and wore basically the same shirt. And see her full post for a snapshot of her own tea mug since she isn’t a coffee drinker. I can relate! I only started drinking coffee a few years ago.

Xat did a great job with the colors of her outfit and her necklace which reminds me of the coffee beans. She tells how she takes her coffee in her blog post, which you can read here.

Then we have newcomer (at least to this blog), Jamie from Michigan and her blue and black outfit AND her coffee!

And, what do you think? Should I do another artwork giveaway as part of the Style Imitating Art series in the future?

Until then, let’s take a look at how I used this photo to inspire an outfit.

IMG_5150

I decided to use my deck furniture and my coffee cup to mimic the blue background of the photo. Since the coffee cup is white and the beans are black it looked like it was time to wear my black and white polka dot blouse and black jeans.

And, of course, leopard print flats because why not?

IMG_5171

I typically only drink one cup of coffee a day and I rarely pay for it. Instead, I drink it at home or I drink the coffee in the office at work. So, although I had dreams of taking this week’s photos in one of the coffee shops in my neighborhood I decided that would be disingenuous. The coffee I do buy? It’s from the donut truck at the farmers’ market on Sunday!

My Sunday morning routine is to take the dog for a run and end at the farmers’ market for coffee, produce, and dog treats before we walk home. I savor that Sunday morning coffee (and the occasional doughnut).  I also only take cream in my coffee. I’m sweet enough already.

Remember, submit your photos and you’ll not only be entered to win the painting but you’ll also get to see them as part of Wednesday’s round-up!

A little Throwback Thursday

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Summer

Remember when I lived in an apartment building with a rooftop deck that had a great view of the Chicago skyline? No? Well, I did. It was awesome. I loved it. Thankfully, I still have friends who live in that building who have an annual end-of-summer barbecue party up there.

Kimono via Belle on the Roe | similar jeans | similar shoes | same tank

Which of course meant I had to take some outfit photos for old times sake!

This is actually the same kimono I wore back when I went to an event at 360 Chicago in the spring. And who says kimonos aren’t versatile?

IMG_9136

I’ve also worn this outfit to work, albeit with different shoes. Our office is mostly tile and unfinished ceilings and “open office” concept which means wedges like these echo when you walk. Since I don’t want to annoy all my coworkers, I stick to quieter flats and sandals most of the time.

But, give me a party and I’ll bust out my fancy shoes!

Monday means coffee [Style Imitating Art Challenge & Giveaway]

Style Imitating Art

If you’re reading this while off work for Labor Day in the United States, well, I hope that just means you have more time to enjoy your morning routine (with or without coffee). If you’re reading this while back at work after a holiday, I hope your coffee or other morning pick-me-up is working!

Why am I talking about coffee? Because this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge features a coffee painting!

FullSizeRender 6

This amazing piece of artwork was painted by Kelly Jo, one of the GrowARTS participants at Garden Center Services.

IMG_9341

I’ve talked about GrowARTS before and I love featuring their artwork on my blog. This time, though, I’ve gone ahead and purchased the artwork. But I’m not keeping it. Instead, I’m going to give it away!

Everyone who participates in this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge and submits a photo of their outfit will be entered to win either the painting itself or a notecard made from an image of the painting!

IMG_9340

So, how do you enter?

Just use this painting to inspire you to come up with an outfit and take a picture! You can do a mirror selfie, a flat lay (where you lay the outfit out on the floor or a table and take a photo), or have someone else take your picture while you’re wearing the outfit. Then email that photo to me at looplooks@gmail.com by 7PM Central Time on Tuesday, September 12th.

You can also participate on Instagram by sharing your outfit photo, tagging me (@looplooks) and adding the hashtag #SIAChallenge.

I’ll draw a winner and announce them in the round-up post on Wednesday, September 13th.

You can use the colors in the painting, the round shape of the cup or coffee beans (polka dots!), wear something coffee colored, or just wear whatever comes to mind when you see this painting. There’s never just one way to interpret art and that’s why this challenge is so fun!

I’m looking forward to seeing all the entries!
