SIA: Bible Quilt

Style Imitating Art

Welcome to Monday, everyone! Did you have a good weekend? Jason and I went on two adventures! First we visited the Garfield Park Conservatory for the first time and then we went to the Chicago Auto Show. I’ve got some fun posts brewing from both trips so stay tuned for those.

In the mean time, I’m super excited to announce that Jen and Salazar have chosen me to help host the Style Imitating Art series!

For the uninitiated, the Style Imitating Art (SIA) series is when one of us chooses a piece of art and then we encourage you (aka our readers) to use that art to come up with an outfit. You then email an outfit photo to that week’s host and then we’ll feature you on our blog! You don’t even have to be a style blogger or even a blogger at all. And a “flat lay” photo or selfie is just fine as your submission.

This week it’s Jen’s turn to choose the art. In honor of Black History Month she wanted to feature an African-American artist. She chose the “Bible Quilt” by Harriet Powers.

Bible Quilt Harriet Powers

Jen says,

Harriet Powers (1837-1910), was an African-American former slave, folk artist, and quilt maker from Georgia. Two of her quilts have survived, including her Bible Quilt, which is in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. The story behind the sale of this quilt is fascinating, which you can read about in detail here on the Smithsonian’s site. Harriet Powers was inducted into the Georgia Women of Achievement Hall of Fame in 2009.

The colors in this quilt would be great for inspiring an outfit of neutrals. Or perhaps you have an item with a pattern that echoes the animals, circles or other shapes? Whatever you choose, you can email your photo to librarianforlifestyle@gmail.com by 10PM PST Monday, February 22nd and she’ll include it in her round-up on her blog on Tuesday, February 23rd.

I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone picks!

Hi Erin! First off, I wish to say congratulations on being chosen as the new SIA curator! I’m so happy for you! I’m Mike and as you’ve probably seen, I’m a regular SIA participant, since May of last year. I look forward to seeing any new ideas that you will bring to the team as well as participating in SIA challenges that you will be curating. And as Salazar and Jen may have told you, I sometimes send the co-creators any new ideas that I may have for future SIA challenges so you’ll hear from me from time to time if I see anything interesting.
But again, great to hear this news and I look forward to all future SIAs in 2016!

P.S. I also subscribed to your blog so that I can get regular updates on what’s going on. Hope that’s okay!
