December Shopping [and gift!] Summary

Believe it or not, this is all that I added to my closet this month. And all of them were Christmas gifts!

One of my 2016 goals is to try and pay off my credit cards and, to do that, I need to stop buying things. Well, at least I need to stop buying clothes. I have credit at Shopbop and at Le Tote if I really want something.

Side note: Le Tote is raising their prices after the first of the year so this is your last chance to lock-in the under $50 per month pricing! Use code ERIN25 to get your first month for 50% off.

Anyway, to be honest, I don’t really need anything right now. In fact, I should probably be purging my closet and whittling it down to the items I really wear and not just hang onto things on the off-chance I might be able to create an outfit with them some day.

I have a lot of outfits saved on my Pinterest boards but lately I’ve been gravitating toward neutrals and simple outfits. I just have this weird fear that if I get rid of something then I’ll have a desire to wear it and it will be gone. Am I alone in this?

Regardless, there’s still no need for much shopping right now. I’ve got what I need. And the credit card balance to show for it. Time to get to work on that! So, uh, if you could click on my little affiliate links and help me out that would be nice, too 🙂 Yes, I just said that. Only kind of shamelessly.

Rainy Day Outfit

Casual Friday

Over the weekend we spent Christmas Day with Jason’s family and then we drove from Indiana back to Illinois to have Christmas with my family. Sadly, we did not have a White Christmas. Instead, it rained on our entire drive from Indiana to Illinois. Although, to be honest, I suppose that was better than having to drive in a snow storm.

We have lovely Christmas celebrations with both our families, came home to a sleepy puppy, and now I’m back to work for a few days before I’m off for New Year’s.

Did you celebrate this past week? Do you have New Year’s plans?

IMG_2798 By the way, if you’re looking for rain boot alternative to the ubiquitous Hunters, especially if you have larger-than-average calves, I can highly recommend Kamik boots. I’ve had these for 5+ years and other than a few scuffs they’re like new. And they fit my calves with pants tucked in, which is more than I can say for most rain boots.

Let’s Get Dressy

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

Before we move on from holiday outfits, I have one last one to share with you. If you follow me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram you probably saw that last week I was debating which dress to wear to the Windy City Blogger Collective Holiday Party at the Hyatt Centric. Long and black with a cut-out back or red and short.

Turns out the long and black dress won by a landslide so that’s what I wore.

IMG_3175

Dress – Le Tote (same) | Heels – Bandolino (similar) | Purse – Kate Spade (similar)

I am wearing a necklace, but it’s tiny and delicate so you can’t see it in the photos. And of course I didn’t think to take a close-up.

Also, Chewie did not join me for the party, however. He’s not a party kind of dog.

IMG_3170

Oh, and in case you’re curious, it’s really difficult to get a good photo of your back when you’re trying not to freeze while taking pictures with an impatient husband and a dog who would rather be playing at the park. This is the best we could manage.

Anyway, the dress got lots of compliments as did my hair. I got it re-dyed right before the party so it looked fresh and curled. I can’t curl my own hair (seriously, I am the worst) which is why it looks the same in most photos: either totally straight or kind of curly in its natural state.

IMG_3158

All of my holiday parties are finally done – except, of course, for the family gatherings I have coming up at the end of the week. But I’m pretty sure I won’t be getting all gussied up for those.

I hope you enjoyed all my holiday outfit posts. I totally didn’t plan to have three of them but, hey, I think it worked out well!

I also hope you have a great holiday or, if you don’t celebrate this week, that you enjoy your week!

An Easy Holiday Outfit

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

On Monday I posted my “no stress holiday party” outfit. But what about when you’re just hanging around with your family or friends and don’t need to be all gussied up?

Well, earlier this year I found the perfect top for just that occasion while perusing the Randolph Street Market.

IMG_2723

IMG_2734

Seriously, I actually had a conversation with the owner and creator of North & Hudson clothing about how this is the perfect top to wear at home during the holidays. It’s just festive enough without being ridiculous, right?

I’ve actually worn it to work twice already and it’s also really comfortable. And, yes, it’s handmade.

It does, however, make me want a red scarf. Or maybe to do some pattern mixing with a navy and white striped scarf. Until then I’ll just wear necklaces.

What do you think? What would you pair with this top?

The Scarf with the Fur

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

When it comes time to vote for my favorite outfit of December, I think it’s going to be this one. This dress. The scarf. The boots. The fun boot cuffs. The hat that gets me compliments all the time. Put them all together and I’m in love.

I actually wore this outfit the day I posted it on Instagram.  I don’t always recreate outfits I post there but I loved this one too much not to. Good thing I ended up wearing it while I was home for Thanksgiving because the scarf alone got a family friend to sign up for Le Tote (and got her $25 off her first month using code ERIN25. Just had to throw that in there!)

This scarf is SO SOFT. I just wanted to pet it all day. I also recently got the burgundy one from Le Tote and am looking forward to wearing it soon, too.

IMG_2773

I don’t know what it is about this outfit that I love so much. Maybe that everything fits perfectly? Seriously, the first time I wore this dress I debated whether or not I was going to keep it but you all weighed in and said I had to because it fit like a dream. You were right, by the way. I always feel like a million bucks when I wear it.

And paired with my favorite boots and a scarf that makes me feel like I have a puppy with me all day long? Yeah. I think this outfit is a winner.

By the way, these photos were taken in the park by my parents’ house. There are all kinds of fun sculptures there!

No Stress Holiday Outfit

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter · Style Imitating Art

Between December 1st and January 1st I bet you have a lot of events to go to. At least, I know I do. And, if you’re like me and also work 8-5, go to the gym, and have a family/dog to take care of  coming up with an outfit to wear to all of those events is just one more thing to stress out about.

But, never fear! I have figured out the answer.

My solution? All black with bling!

IMG_2968

Black sequined pants or a black sequined skirt paired with a black top and a glittery statement necklace are easy to put together and show some fun holiday spirit but don’t require much thought. I mean, what’s easier than all black?

So, whether you have an upcoming holiday party or need an idea for New Year’s Eve, may I suggest something with black sequins? Here are a few ideas:

P.S. This outfit and post were partially inspired by this week’s choice for Style Imitating Art – “Stressed Out” by Layla Holzer.

Last chance to vote for your favorite outfit of November!

Recently Carylee of More Pieces of Me posted a fun outfit on Instagram and I immediately thought, oh, hey, I can do that!

And it wasn’t until I was already wearing it and taking pictures that I realized that I’d basically worn the same thing in a different color scheme to the Chicago Auto Show earlier this year.

This time, though, I wore it to walk to work. I don’t usually walk to work but there’s a reason I did last Friday.

There’s a walk-up coffee, doughnut and gelato window in my neighborhood that’s on my way to my office if I walk. It’s called Bombobar, it’s part of a restaurant called Bar Siena, and on Friday they were offering free coffee and “bombolinis” (aka filled doughnuts) to members of the Windy City Blogger Collective. Sadly, when I arrived on Friday morning to get coffee to enjoy on my walk to the office they weren’t quite ready to be open. But, I’d already committed to walking to work so walk I did. It’s about two miles and I chose these TOMS specifically because I knew I could walk that much in them.

IMG_2850

I stopped and got my coffee and doughnut on my way home, though! Jason and split a PB&J bombolini for dessert and I saved my coffee for breakfast the next morning. Not sure if that’s gross or not but it’s what I did.

Chewie, however, was very interested in my “prop” during our photoshoot.

IMG_2864

After having the PB&J bombolini I decided I wanted to try the Salted Caramel one that everyone was raving about. However, once again I stopped by Bombo Bar on my way to work yesterday around 7:15 AM and there were no employees to be seen. I rang the bell and waited a minute but the only movement I saw was a cleaning person hosing off a mat in the kitchen. So, I walked to work sans coffee (and doughnut) again. But! There was a happy ending. Bombobar saw my disappointment on Twitter and brought me doughnuts and coffee at work! My coworkers were very appreciative.

Have you voted for your favorite outfit of November yet?

Recently AJ of AJ Wears Clothes asked if any of us style bloggers with puppies would be interested in modeling her husband’s new line of Fur & Collar tees. Of course I jumped at the chance. A fun graphic tee that professes my love for my pup? Yeah, I think I can handle that.

Additionally, it gave me the perfect opportunity to use the tee to recreate an outfit I’d saved from AJ’s blog!

IMG_2670

Tee – c/o Fur & Collar (same) | Cardigan – H&M via clothing swap (similar) | Necklace – Randolph Street Market (similar) | Pants – The Limited (similar)  | Shoes – Nine West (same)

Fur & Collar has shirts for all kinds of specific dog breeds, including Frenchies, Corgis, and Labs to name a few. And if you order by tomorrow (December 8th) you’re guaranteed to get it before Christmas. Perfect for the dog lover in your life, right? Plus, 50% of the total profits from the sales of the Rescue tee that I’m wearing will go to a charity or organization that helps with the rescue or adoption of dogs and cats.

IMG_2683

Chewie is a rescue and we’re told he’s a German Shepherd and an Australian Cattle Dog mix. Not sure how accurate that is, though. We adopted him when he was 8 months old and he’s currently just over two years. People still think he’s a puppy, though, because of his ears and his long legs.

Chewie is very, very protective and it takes him a long time to feel comfortable in new spaces or with new people. And, sadly, he tends to display his discomfort by being aggressive. I originally wanted a chill dog that we could take to patios or on trips but, alas, we got this furface. My track record when adopting dogs isn’t the best but we always love them anyway. And other than his anxiety issues, Chewie is a pretty awesome dog. He goes for 10 mile runs with me, loves to play with other dogs at the park, doesn’t bark at random things while inside our apartment, has never destroyed anything of consequence and learns things pretty quickly. If only he didn’t hate people…

IMG_2666

There was another dog walking by when were taking these photos outside the new Google offices. Chewie was very interested since he loves other dogs…as long as they don’t bark or lunge at him.

A sweater and boots

Don’t forget to vote for your favorite outfit of November! As usual, the votes so far are surprising me!

Moving on…..

When I was at my parents’ for Thanksgiving Jason and I took the opportunity to take quite a few outfit photos. My parents live down the street from a great park so we went there to shoot. Good thing I’m not adverse to using port-a-potties thanks to all the races I’ve run! Yes, I changed in the one at the park. It was a really big one, though. Jason said if I changed in the car I might scare people.

Anyway, this is one of the outfits we shot. It’s actually one I created earlier in the spring for a day of getting breakfast from our favorite food truck and going to the Apple store to buy my laptop. In fact, I was wearing this outfit when I became someone who drinks coffee and uses a Mac.

IMG_2736

Scarf – DSW (similar) | Sweater – LOFT (similar) | Jeans – Old Navy (same) | Boots – Sam Edelman c/o Shopbop (same)

I’ve since worn this outfit to wander around town with my mom, to work, and a variety of other places. I love it because the sweater allows a t-shirt to peek out from underneath, the boots bring out the cognac in the scarf, and it’s perfect for a slightly chilly day.

IMG_2744

The only thing I don’t like is that the sleeves are full length. I’m a weirdo who almost always pushes up my sleeves and I definitely prefer three-quarter length sleeves or bracelet sleeves to full length. Pushing up sleeves on sweaters, though, can sometimes stretch them out. So when I wear this outfit to work you’ll find me wandering around with my sleeves rolled up.

Speaking of rolling up my sleeves, I have to give a speech in Toastmasters on Thursday and I’m still trying to decide on a topic. I asked my friends on Facebook for ideas and several of them wanted me to talk about how I balance blogging, working, and volunteering with making time for Chewie, Jason and my friends. Not sure that’s something my coworkers in Toastmasters want to hear about, though, but it might be something I write about on the blog. The short answer: life isn’t always what it seems on social media. But you all knew that already, right?

Favorite Outfit of November

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

Over Thanksgiving weekend I was able to bank quite a few outfit photos which means that the upcoming month will have some outfits that I really did wear, just that I took the photos out of order.

November was similar in that I didn’t always get the photo on the day I wore the outfit. However, my favorite outfit from the month is one that I did actually wear for the whole day when we took the picture.

IMG_0031

Original post

I still maintain there is nothing particularly noteworthy about this outfit. But, then again, it’s what I wore and I think it’s an attainable outfit for those of you who read this little blog. A great scarf can go a long way!

So, what do you think? Do you agree with me or do you have a different favorite from the past month?
