December Shopping (and Gift) Summary

Shopping

Not pictured:

Every December I try really hard not to buy things for myself. But, you know, it’s difficult when ALL THE THINGS are on sale. That pink blazer was particularly difficult for me to hold off on. But I did and I got it as a gift from my mom which made it worth it.

I took quite a few things to a local consignment shop, sold a shirt on eBay, and donated some additional items to score a discount at a local boutique where I bought some Christmas gifts.

I also got a new coat from my mom as an early gift. She let me pick it out and since Macy’s had coats on a crazy sale I actually end up getting two because I couldn’t decide.coats

Jason told me I had too many coats so I actually ended up getting rid of THREE older ones! One went to the consignment shop, one was donated to a coat drive, and the other went to Goodwill. Spreading the coat love all around. I’m currently wearing the Michael Kors one and have the Anne Klein hanging in the closet as a back-up.

With my birthday coming up in two weeks I’m sure I’ll be getting a few more gifts (especially since my dad already said he’d take me shopping) but, honestly, right now I can’t figure out what I want! Such a first world problem to have, right?

Post-Christmas Greens

I hope everyone is enjoying the end of their year! This is the first time in six years that I haven’t had the week between Christmas and New Year’s off and trying to fit in all the things I  used to do during that time is….interesting. I was so spoiled!

Anyway, I had a great time celebrating Christmas with my family and thankfully my stomach bug cleared up so I was able to eat whatever I wanted. Which is why I was grateful for this incredibly comfy sweater.

I bought this sweater on a whim at Old Navy one day and hadn’t really worn it much. But when I layered it over a white tank top I never wanted to take it off.

This outfit isn’t particularly ground-breaking or anything but it’s a good example of my casual style. Also, I’ve really been into vests this winter. And sweaters. But, I mean, winter in Illinois means sweaters.

It also means gifts. How’s that for a segue? I’m hoping to get my usual budget/gift post up this week (I know. You’ll just die without it.) but remember that previously mentioned no time off work? Yeah.

Maybe I’ll put it up on New Year’s Day when no one’s reading anyway 🙂

What to pack for winter vacation, winter break

I used to be a horrible over-packer. Throwing anything and everything in a suitcase because I wanted options. And then I realized that I just needed to get better about mixing and matching what I brought instead of bringing a totally separate outfit for each day! So that’s what I did when I packed for my winter vacation to Flagstaff, AZ (where it snows and is cold, by the way). I packed 12 pieces and could have easily made at least 12 different outfits!

What to pack for winter vacation, winter breakRed plaid | Vest | Boots | Gray plaid | Cardigan | Scarf | Sweater | Tee | Sweater | Black jeans | Blue jeans | Leggings

I stuck to a black and gray color palate with a pop of red from the one plaid shirt. Flagstaff is very casual and so is my husband’s family so there was no need to dress up. I also only brought one pair of shoes (in addition to my snow boots) so that I had plenty of room for ski gear.

Of course, I ended up getting sick on my trip and spent one entire day in pajamas. Although, even if I had needed real clothes I probably STILL over-packed. Why? Because look at all these outfits I could have made from the 12 pieces I brought.

12-pieces-12-outfitsAnd, believe it or not, the outfit I wore on the plane isn’t even pictures! Nope. On the plan I wore the outfit in the center of the bottom row WITH the houndstooth vest! Crazy, right?

So, learn from me. You don’t need to pack everything in your closet. Just pick a few key pieces that you can mix and match and you’ll be good to go. Don’t believe me? Here’s some other packing posts I’ve done that might help you change your mind:

And with that, I’m off to enjoy my holiday week! I wish you and yours a wonderful holiday (or a wonderful December, if you prefer). See you on the flip side!

Le Tote Leftovers

Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

As I slowly recover from whatever stomach ailment I contracted while in Arizona, I’m very glad I had this photo from a few weeks ago before I sent back my last Le Tote shipment.

letote-arrow-blazer-1I actually wore this blazer twice (first time here) and clearly I like to wear it with v-neck t-shirts. But unlike the last time I wore it, this time I wore it to work. I sort of liked the Western vibe I got from wearing these ankle boots with jeans over them instead of tucked inside. However, I wished I had black booties to wear that didn’t have a high heel. So, I ordered these from Shopbop.

I haven’t had a chance to wear them yet since they came right before I left for Arizona and right now my brain is in survival mode and not “put together a cute outfit” mode. In fact, I left work after a morning full of meetings so I could come home and sit on my couch with this face.

chewie_tongueSo, if I don’t have anything interesting to say right now it’s because my brain is mush due to illness and puppy cuddles. Fingers crossed I’m more interesting next week.

December Things

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

December seems to mean two things: glittery holiday party outfits and the stomach flu.

One is clearly better than the other.

I wore this dress to my running club’s holiday party. It only gets worn about once a year (typically at the holidays or in Vegas)  but isn’t that the point of a sparkly dress? It’s not every day wear but it sure is fun.

gold-sequin-dress-1Unfortunately, the other thing that seems to happen once a year is that aforementioned stomach flu. Jason had it last month and now I seem to have caught it. On one hand, I’m on vacation so it’s not like I have a lot of responsibilities. On the other hand, I’m on vacation and somehow I have to get home. Fingers crossed I get better before I have to get on a plane!

Wild and Crazy Outfit

Greetings from Arizona! I’m visiting my in-laws right now with plans to go skiing and possibly snowboarding. I originally had visions of doing an entire week of posts about what to wear to holiday parties but couldn’t get my act together. Thankfully I was able to get some pics of outfits I wore in the past two weeks to share with you instead.

And hopefully when I get back I can do a run down of what I packed and all the different outfits I could make out of those items.

In the mean time, here’s one of my favorite outfits I’ve worn in the past few weeks. And, of course, it features the ubiquitous blanket scarf.

I mean, red and black isn’t a crazy combo, but with PLAID!

Okay, it’s still not that crazy.

Also, I’m trying to write this post while my in-laws watch SNL and it’s really difficult. So, I’ll just leave you with another photo of my WILD AND CRAZY outfit.

The Perfect Gift So You Can Coordinate With Your Dog

Shopping

Is anyone else freaking out about gift shopping right about now? I know I am. I’ve gotten some fun things for people but I’m also feeling really far behind! One of my goals this year was to shop local or at least shop from non-big box stores but it’s been difficult to find the time. Plus, since I’m going out of town for a few days in the middle of this month I’m losing one entire weekend to shop!

The Yahoo! Style site – thankfully optimized for mobile devices so I can browse at the airport

Which is why I’m glad I learned that Yahoo! Style is putting together some AWESOME gift guides for basically everyone on my gift giving list. They’re doing one each day and each one has a different angle. Of course, I immediately gravitated toward the one for Dog Lovers.  Because clearly Chewie needs a gift for his first Christmas with us.

And what better thing to get him than this adorable collar?

collar

I mean, really. We already know that I like to color coordinate with Chewie. So, a red and black buffalo plaid collar? How perfect would that be?

He could wear it while I wear my red and black plaid shirt and we’d both be right on trend.

plaid-shirt-black-pants-1[1]

Or I could exchange the shorts for a skirt or pants and his collar would add just the right amount of pattern to this black and red look.

I also have plans to take my bow dress and convert it for winter by wearing it over a turtleneck and tights. Wouldn’t the two of us be adorable if we did some pattern mixing?

bow-dress-denim-jacket-1_thumb.jpgOf course, if you’re more of a cat person, Yahoo! Style not only has a gift guide for your feline friend, they also have a great article on what to wear for National Cat Day.  Where’s the article for National Dog Day, you ask? I think I’ll have to get right on creating that one. Clearly Chewie and I have this whole thing down pat.

Now excuse me, I’m off to buy a collar….

Just a Tribute

Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

On Monday night I attended the FABULOUS Windy City Blogger Holiday Party and wore a super cute outfit but since there’s no natural light and my photographer was at work anyway, I got no photos. I’ll just have to recreate it for you.

So, this is not that outfit. But, I still think this one is pretty cute. It’s very similar to an outfit I wore WAY back at the beginning of this here blog and I got the idea to wear it again from Brittany from The F Bombs.

I almost wore my black ankle boots again but, strangely, I haven’t really been feeling the heels all that much lately. I think because the walking part of my commute is longer than it was six months ago. Or maybe I’m getting old. Whatever it is, I decided to wear the leopard flats which I think are a nice change of pace.cobalt-blazer-leather-pants-2This particular t-shirt is a bit boxy on me so by pairing it with a blazer it keeps me from looking too square. Because I’m not!

What I am, however, is a sucker for letting Chewie climb all over me. I mean, who am I kidding? He’s the star of these photoshoots anyway.

That Houndstooth Vest

Viagra and clonidine · Casual Friday · Office Appropriate Outfits - Winter

As I mentioned in my November Shopping Summary, I bought the cliched blogger vest: that houndstooth J. Crew one. Of course, mine is a “designer knock-off” but, really, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?

And I’m pretty sure they all came from the same factory anyway.

I wore this outfit the day before Thanksgiving for the car ride to my parents’. Vests are perfect for situations like that because they keep you warm without overheating in the car. Or is that just me?

Anyway, my mom said she loved my vest and I always get a thrill out of her liking something I’m wearing. And, like I said in my shopping post, the quality of this vest is amazing for the price. I’m really glad I bought it.

Proventil ventolin difference Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

Guess what everyone! It’s time for our monthly wrap-up and your chance to vote for your favorite outfit from November.

Of course, first I’m sure you all want to know what my favorite outfit from the month was. I’ll be honest, I think it’s a three way tie. And that I am glad I bought new riding boots.

favorite-november-outfitsI love these three outfits because they all felt so…me. Preppy with edge. I think that’s how I’m describing my style these days. I felt amazing in all three outfits and would wear them or something similar all fall and winter. By the way, a very similar outfit won for October: the plaid scarf and cream sweater with, you guessed it, jeans and riding boots.

Clearly you guys feel the same way as me. That’s why we like each other.

So, what will it be this month? One of my favorites or something else entirely? Don’t forget to vote using the poll below and remember you should be able to click any of the thumbnails to see the full outfit.

What was your favorite outfit from November 2014?
