Bullet Points and Polka Dots

Office Appropriate Outfits - Spring

Sweater – Forever 21 (similar in more sizes) | Shirt – The Limited (similar) | Skirt – J. Crew Factory (similar under $25) | Shoes – Bandolino (similar) | Necklace – JF&A Show (similar)

First things first: the outfit.  Inspired by ShopGirl DC and worn on one of our first bare legs days this year (apologies for the starkness of my gams!) I am in love with this outfit. I love the pop of pink. I love that it consists of my favorite color of the moment (navy), and I love that it gives me a way to wear this shirt that I’d never thought of before.

You know what you love about it? You can recreate it with the pieces linked above for under $100.  Yes, I’m serious. And even though the Target website says that polka dot skirt isn’t sold in stores, I know I saw it at my local Target recently.  So there.

Anyway, Lauren over at Lauren Runs to Tri tagged me for one of those Liebster Awards where you list 11 random things about you and then answer 11 questions.  You all seemed to enjoy learning some random facts about me last week so why not have a few more?

11 Random Facts About Me

1. I was on the dance team as a senior in high school and also graduated with a perfect GPA. I was an odd mix of cheerleader, outcast, and nerd.

2. My undergraduate honors thesis was on the differences between male and female serial killers. Yep.

3. I’m married to the guy I started dating the summer before my senior year of high school. We had to date long-distance for four years while I was away at college but we made it! Our 10 year wedding anniversary is in May.

4. I used to hate all pies made with fruit. Now I enjoy apple pie and some berry pies but blueberry, cherry or peach pie are still on the no list.

5. I will try most foods at least twice before I make a determination about whether or not I like them.

6. I have two tattoos.  The one on my foot that you’ve probably seen in outfit photos and one on my back above my left hip.

7. I would rather read a book than watch a movie.

8. I got my first email address in 1996. I had a dial-up modem and AOL.

9. There is a birthmark on my left leg in the shape of a paw print but it has significantly faded as I’ve gotten older.

10. I’m terrified of snakes.

11. I’ve never worked in retail.  Food service, yes, but never retail.

Lauren’s Questions

1.  What time did you go to bed last night?

11:30 PM. I usually try to be in bed by 11:00 but lately it’s been 11:30.

2. How do you feel about public speaking?

I don’t mind it at all.  I’m technically an introvert but one who loves public speaking. Seems contradictory, but it’s really not. I like being in control of when I talk and public speaking is one way to do that! Good thing I don’t mind it, too. Part of my job involves leading training courses for other staff members!

3. If you were invisible, where would you go?

Skinny dipping in an infinity pool overlooking some gorgeous view somewhere

4. What do you want to do for your next birthday?

My birthday is in January so I always have to think of indoor things to do. I had a really good time doing a wine and painting class for my birthday this year, though, so I’m actually thinking of making it an annual event!

5. Where would you like to live when you retire?

It would be great if I could have a place in Chicago and a place somewhere warmer.  Just so that when I get tired of cold I could escape for a week. Now that I live in an apartment building and don’t have to shovel, I don’t care about the snow but sometimes the cold and the gray just gets to me.

6. What’s your favorite strength move that is quick to do?

I hope straight-legged deadlifts count because those are my favorite.

7. What is your favorite pair of shoes?

Either my nude heels or my brown riding boots.

8. What type of art do you like best?

Not knowing enough about art to be able to describe it, I guess I’d have to say in terms of paintings or photography I like geometric designs, urban landscapes, and colors.

9. Sweet or salty?

Both?  Although I more often crave sweet than salty. And if I eat too much salt I DEFINITELY want something sweet afterward.

10. Who is the last person you talked with on the phone?

Um….does leaving a voicemail count? No? Then I guess it was Kim. On Sunday. No, wait, I made a hair appointment yesterday over the phone. Yes, seriously, I can go entire days without talking to someone on the phone even at work.

11. What is your mousepad like?

At work it’s a plain purple pad. At home it’s a random mouse pad I stole from my husband YEARS ago. It’s an underwater photo of a dolphin. Told you it was random.

I’m not going to tag anyone, but feel free to answer those questions above in the comments or on your own blog. Or just tell me something random about yourself!

I love the skirt. Now I’m trying to figure out what I can wear with my polka dot dress to make it look like a skirt.
I love the random facts. So interesting to know more about you.
I had a perfect GPA in high school too but didn’t dance/cheer. I ran cross country and track, was in the band, and bowling team.
Your undergrad thesis sounds so interesting!!
I love hearing about love stories. So cool that you and your husband met in high school and managed to get through the college years!
I used to hate cherry pie. Now it’s my favorite.
I also will try foods more than once before I determine if I don’t like it. I like most foods and a lot of the times I dislike something and eventually it becomes a favorite. See cherry pie.
I worked two retail jobs but have never worked in the food service industry.
The more I see your nude heels, the more I want a pair of my own… and I don’t wear heels very often.
I don’t talk on the phone often. I can definitely go a week without talking on my phone, even at work.
I don’t have a mousepad. I use a laptop at home and a mouse without a pad at work.

Sorry to leave a novel in your comments.

    1. Erin @ Loop Looks Post author

      Maybe you need nude flats?

I HATE the little track pad/nubbin thing on laptops. Even when I use a laptop I have to bring my mouse along.

Also, if my high school had had a bowling team I totally would have joined. I didn’t run in high school so I never did track or cross country but now that I run as an adult I kind of wish that I had.

  2. kelsey

ps- how to target bottoms normally fit? I’ve only owned shirts but I want that skirt and am not sure how their sizes run!

  3. Anne

What a cute outfit! I had a similar polka dotted skirt from Boden on my wishlist last fall/winter, and completely forget to snatch it up during their end of season clearance. I’ll have to check out Target!

I hardly ever use the phone anymore either. I had a call with someone from work at 5 yesterday, and he asked if I was sick because I sounded hoarse – it’s because I was at home and hadn’t talked to anyone all day! And I didn’t know you married your high school sweetheart – how cute 🙂

  4. Maggie

I didn’t know you were on the dance team! I was too. And soccer, mathletes, band. So I was everything – nerd, jock, peppy. And I don’t really like fruit pies either. I hate fruit in sugary syrup.

    1. Erin @ Loop Looks Post author

My high school made us choose between band and choir and I chose choir. So, dance team, choir, and some various volunteer organizations. Oh, and the literary/poetry magazine. Sounds like you and I were both dabbling in a bit of everything.

Also, we both need to dig up pictures of our dance team days. I’m still sad I don’t have any video.

      1. Maggie

Hmm maybe that will be a future photo challenge. My sis-in-law’s dad has video of many of our performances. Crappy, 90s VHS videos. But still. Don’t know if they are worth converting to digital.

        1. Erin @ Loop Looks Post author

The mom of one of the girl’s on the team made a video of all our performances but it got duped so many times that it was basically unwatchable. I have no idea what happened to it!

  5. Miranda

I love your outfit! The pop of pink is so cute with the blue and the polka dot skirt is too cute! I enjoyed reading your random facts too!

  6. Bethany @ Accidental Intentions

LOVE the outfit. Navy and pink go so well together. Also, totally stalked your blog yesterday afternoon for a significant amount of time. I was going to a networking event and had to dress business casual…hahahaha funny joke, right? As if I know how to wear business casual clothes. I think I did all right, though, so thanks for the inspiration!

Now, for the real important question: have you dabbled in FRESH blueberry or peach pies? Because personally, I could take or leave cooked blueberry and peach pie…generally leave it, really. I mean, if someone’s serving it I’ll eat it, but I’m not going to go out of my way to get it by any means. Fresh pie, however, is a completely different ball game. I am very, very much in the “Fruit is fruit and dessert is dessert, and the two should never under any circumstance be confused for the same thing” camp, but fresh fruit pies are definite game changers, particularly those made by my mother and grandmother (though I might be a little biased on that front).

      1. Bethany @ Accidental Intentions

I wore black heeled booties, grey slacks, and a purple sweater with a purple collared top underneath. I think I did all right?

A cooked fruit pie is one you put in the oven. They come out looking like such: http://www.prioryfinepastries.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/SH1006_Spiced_Peach_Pie_lg.jpg

A fresh fruit pie, however, is chilled. You make (or buy) a pie crust, and then do some fancy magic on the stovetop with the fruit and sugar that I don’t know because I’ve only watched my mom make the pies and have never made them myself. They come out looking like this: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7nXGz0y5-J4/SL__uy5tELI/AAAAAAAABl8/HL4uFrPvoho/s400/PioneerDayCampout,+July'08+005+best+blog.jpg. Or a recipe, if that helps explain things better: http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/fresh-peach-pie. Like I said, I think fresh blueberry or peach pie > cooked blueberry or peach pie.

  7. Valerie

LOVE this outfit…pinning it now! And happy early 10 year anniversary- wow!! Lucky you to not work in retail– I did that in HS/college and worked at Gap and Ann Taylor. Fun times. NOT! I once worked as a server in a waitress in high school. For three days. I spilled drinks on a guy and it was his birthday…yeah, I’m not cut out for that lol!

    1. Erin @ Loop Looks Post author

I am…not the best waitress. But, I did okay. My husband and I actually worked at the same restaurant while we were dating and he was a much better server than I was.

  8. Rebekah

I must say, I’m so amused by the first picture. It looks like the statue is patting you on your shoulder! Awesome.

Anyway, I hear you on the fruit pie thing. I never ate pie until I met my husband, and now it’s grown on me.

I agree with you about the public speaking thing, too. I’m pretty shy, but I don’t mind public speaking at all when I’m prepared. It seems to be more of a phobia with outgoing people, for some reason.

    1. Erin @ Loop Looks Post author

Strangely, I prefer public speaking when I don’t have a pre-written speech. I do better with a general outline and then just an idea of what I want to say.

  9. Laura @ Laura Wears...

Love the random facts. It’s so nice to get to know the people behind the blogs 🙂 I am jealous of your dance skills!
I too was an odd mix of everything is high school – athlete, band member, computer club member. I’ve never worked in retail either, but worked behind the bar as a 2nd job during my undergrad. I also worked at Wendy’s in high school. Let me tell you – being in food/booze service was a real education in itself – I learned very quickly what type of person I do not want to be…it’s AMAZING how rude/inappropriate/judgemental people are!

    1. Erin @ Loop Looks Post author

I really wanted to be in marching band in high school (I would have joined the drum corps) but they made us choose between choir and band and I chose choir. Otherwise I totally would have been a band geek, too!

  10. Katie of Alaskan Weredork

Your phone comment made me laugh, I hate talking on the phone! I dislike texting even more, I’d just rather talk to people in person.
I love just the hint of bright pink with your collar, that’s such a fantastic way to wear brights and the little bit of sparkle makes it look special.

  11. Emily

That outfit is so chic and the nude shoes are in full-force! Love how in the picture it looks like the statue is also admiring your outfit. =D

Love the random facts, especially #1 and #2! And not to sound creepy, but I would love to hear the conclusions from your thesis. Maybe we can talk about it during our morning run next week (although that might be a bit of a heavy topic for early in the morning, LOL).

  12. kilax

I noticed yesterday was Carolyn’s first bare legs day at work… until I looked closer and saw she had hose on that matched her skin tone! LOL!

    Straight-legged deadlifts count!!!

  13. Jamie

I’ve been eying that Target skirt for awhile…they definitely have it in store!! I’m loving the polka dots, too!!
