One of the first style blogs I started reading was Jill’s Good Life for Less. At the time she was putting together outfit ideas for people who contacted her and asked for her help. She was nice enough to share many of those outfits with her readers. One outfit with a black blazer, gray slacks, and a purple scarf caught my eye. And, I admit, I spent the next year looking for slate gray dress pants.
Until it hit me – practice what you preach! Okay, so I don’t have dark gray pants. But I do have light gray pants so why not go with that? Duh, Erin. And, yes, I have a black blazer but sticking with the inspiration not recreation vibe, I decided I wanted to be a bit more casual today and tossed on the cardigan instead. Sometimes you just can’t deal with a blazer, you know? Especially when the only thing on my calendar for today is a coworker’s birthday and more trapeze classes!
Remember, when you see an outfit you like, try first to see if you already have items similar to it in your closet. They may not be exact but I bet in many cases you were drawn to that outfit because you like those colors or styles. And if you already like them, you probably already own something like it!

Pairing the fancy sequined skirt with a neutral colored cardigan and nude heels helps keep it from being too bling-y or overwhelming.
The fact that I paired two pieces that could be considered slightly casual but added heels and a blazer makes my outfit work appropriate without being traditional.
Ever since I bought this tie-neck top I have been wanting to pair it with these pants.
Today I’m going to share with you one of my favorite ways to this lace dress that I’ve come up with yet.

MORE TRAPEZE!!!! HAVE a blast!!! Take more video!
Sadly, Jason has too much homework tonight so he won’t be there to take video.
Yay for a birthday at work and more trapeze!!!
This outfit is so put together and simple. That is totally my “style” (pretending I have one here – p.s. I need another closet consultation – aka an excuse for you to visit).
I love the red background!
Jason needed to photograph red things for a class assignment and I’d seen this door in the neighborhood. Two birds, one stone!
I’m definitely feeling the simpler vibe this week. Haven’t even been wearing much jewelry!
I LOVE THAT SCARF. (Duh. Dark purple is my clothing JAM). I also really like the detail on that top…and the fact that there’s a similar one at Target for $15. Hmm…
Have fun at trapeze! Channel your inner Cirque de Soleil-ness!
I bought this scarf at Target several years ago. It actually has tonal polka dots on it but you can’t really see them in the pictures. It was my first scarf I ever bought just to wear and not just to keep me warm in the winter
You can never go wrong with a cardigan in my book. Never.
Have fun at trapeze class!
You are correct. Many an outfit can be transformed with a cardigan!
So important to try to create with what you have. I need to organize my pinterest account like that – I think: outfits I can do now, outfits I love but maybe can’t make with pieces I currently own.
That would be a good way to organize it! I keep thinking I need to subdivide the over 300 outfit inspiration pins I have but I haven’t quite figured out the best way.
Those trapeze classes sound like so much fun! I’d love to try something like that, it just sounds like a blast and a killer workout. I like the thought inspiration not recreation, I know I’ve fallen into that trap before.
Have fun at your class!
It is SO MUCH FUN! Their tag line is “forget the fear, worry about the addiction” and they are so right. I just bought six more classes
Love the detail on that shirt. Going to buy the similar version now!! xo
Fun! I’ll be looking for it on your blog
Favorite details: That red door, the sweet grin on your face, and the peek of the striped sock.
Jason had to take pictures of red things for his photography class. I’d noticed this red door up the street from our apartment the previous week. We had to make a pilgrimage!
