That Catty Purple Skirt

Remember how I mentioned I plan out my outfits for weeks in advance? Well, sometimes you put on the outfit you planned and it just isn’t doing it for you. This is one of those times. I tried this on with a black pencil skirt, black pants, and this purple skirt and didn’t love any of them. But in the end I decided to go with the purple skirt since it was the least “expected” option.
There’s a lot going on with this outfit. The shirt is lace. The cardigan is printed. The skirt is a bold color. I’m thinking now that I see this outfit put together that it would look better with a bare leg and a nude pump. The black tights are too heavy for the top of the outfit leading it to be unbalance. Otherwise, though, I think I like the mixture of textures, patterns and colors. Just not with the black on bottom.
What do you think?
And while we’re on the subject of your thoughts, have you filled out the Loop Looks First Birthday Reader Survey yet?

Nothing is classier to me than tweed and a pencil skirt.
A reader recently contacted me and asked for help with a pair of ankle boots she just bought.
Right now I’m pretty happy with my closet. But even so there are days when I stand there and stare at all the hangers and think, “I wish I had….”
I’ve had all of these clothing pieces in my closet for a long time. I keep wavering on whether or not to keep the cardigan and then it keeps staying.
Pairing the fancy sequined skirt with a neutral colored cardigan and nude heels helps keep it from being too bling-y or overwhelming.

Well you know I love the sassy picture! I actually really like this. I have a leopard print cardigan similar to this and I never thought about wearing it with color!
I really do like the leopard cardigan with the purple skirt but just not with this top or tights combo. I’ll be retrying this one in the future, for sure.
I was thinking the same thing with the black being too heavy. Did you go nude panty hose for the office today?
Believe it or not, I actually don’t own nude hose. I thought about going to Target last night and buying some but was feeling lazy (even though Target is all of 5 minutes from home). So, uh, I swapped out the purple skirt for a black one this morning.
So we are having the same outfit day! I plan out outfits ahead of time too, and I hate when that happens! What if you had black on under the cardigan instead of white? That’d probably balance it out. I really like the print with purple though!
Great idea for putting black instead of white! Adding that to my mental list of outfit ideas. I really like getting feedback from you guys and then re-doing an outfit and showing why one works and one doesn’t side-by-side.
I realized that we basically gave each other the same suggestion – lose the white for something darker!
Great minds!
I mean, I think it’s no secret that my outfit-putting-together-sense is minimal, but I don’t think the black tights are awful with this. I think the cardigan is so bold with the leopard print that it pulls your eyes up anyway, and the black gives you a neutral base to keep things from being too busy. Although I suppose nude is a neutral as well…haha.
Also, per your comment on my blog today, I am now officially $90 poorer because I just signed up for a half marathon during the middle of marathon training. If this ends up being a bad idea, you owe my $90
(kidding, kidding. I was tempted to register for the race anyway, since the location is convenient, and though I don’t know exactly what CARA’s training plan looks like, if it’s close to Novice 1 on Hal Higdon’s website, I’ll only have to flip flop things by a week or so, which is definitely more ideal than running a half marathon and then having to continue running to get in my long run for the week haha).
Peer pressure!
Which half did you sign up for?
ZOOMA. I get why some of the people who ran it last year aren’t stoked about the changes this year, but it’s SO convenient for me as far as timing, location, etc. I’m pretty sure I’d lose my job if I ran Rock & Roll and I don’t like the timing of the Chicago Half with marathon this year, so ZOOMA it is. Plus, this way if for some reason things get messed up with me running the marathon, I at least have a long race to shoot for (AND if something got messed up with the marathon, this race is done before the Air & Water Show, so I could avoid dealing with all sorts of tourists on the path that weekend hahaha. Although, I suppose if something did get messed up with the marathon I’d probably want to run the Chicago Half again, which means I’d still be running Air & Water Show weekend. Meh. I’ll cross these bridges when I get to them
).
AND also if something gets messed up with the Chicago Marathon, there’s another marathon I know I could run the following week, so ZOOMA still works great with my schedule. (I’m now mostly just justifying this to myself rather than you. These dang registration fees are so hard to swallow!)
I had fun at ZOOMA last year and I totally understand why they changed the location although Lake Geneva was pretty!
I personally really like the tights with it! Black tights look great with almost anything if you ask me
Love the purple skirt and I think it looks great paired with leopard!
Yeah, the purple and the leopard are my favorite part of this outfit for sure!
I love “unexpected” mixing of things. I usually view animal prints as neutrals, so it’s fun to see them with bold colors, and I loooove mixing textures. And now you have another outfit for the spring!
Pairing animal prints with purples, reds, and greens are some of my favorite combinations.
Sexy!!! I love the pop of color with the purple skirt, and all the visual interest from the lace and animal print!
Thanks!
I can’t quite decide. I really like the purple skirt with the cardigan and the dark tights and I like the lace top with the skirt and the cardigan. I think it’s like you said, the white throws it off just a bit? Maybe a black lace top would work with the darker tights on bottom and the nude tights would work when you do the white lace?
I don’t know, I really love elaments of this, the leopard print cardi with the purple skirt is brilliant! It’s such a unusual pairing and I love it, the purple looks so vibrant. (I do love it when you analyse your outfits, you always explain why they work or don’t and it’s so helpful!)
I agree with you that the lighter top needs to be balanced out with a lighter bottom. I’ll definitely be trying this look again.
I absolutely LOVE that purple and leopard together! I actually just pinned a look on pinterest that was similar!
Fun! Isn’t Pinterest great for stuff like that?
