Inspiration Monday – The Printed Shirt

This week’s Inspiration Monday photo features an adorable printed shirt with a simple pair of jeans. Or maybe they’re black pants. Your call.

Regardless, I realized that I do not own a long-sleeved printed shirt that fit the bill. Although The Limited has some seriously adorable ones.
But, I do not need to purchase a shirt just to create an inspiration look. Nope. I have a wonderful printed shirt that I recently received for my birthday. And although it’s a short-sleeved top, just pair with cardigan and it’s perfect for winter.
I also had this top on with my super-skinny black pants but it felt too casual for work. So, bootcut black pants it is. But at least my shoes have little gold studs just like the inspiration photo shoes seem to.
I feel like I say this every Monday, but you really don’t need the exact same items in a photo to be inspired to recreate it. Use what you have!
P.S. Please come back tomorrow! We’ll be getting all interactive up in here and we’re celebrating someone’s first birthday!

A reader recently contacted me and asked for help with a pair of ankle boots she just bought.
Right now I’m pretty happy with my closet. But even so there are days when I stand there and stare at all the hangers and think, “I wish I had….”
I’ve had all of these clothing pieces in my closet for a long time. I keep wavering on whether or not to keep the cardigan and then it keeps staying.
Pairing the fancy sequined skirt with a neutral colored cardigan and nude heels helps keep it from being too bling-y or overwhelming.
The fact that I paired two pieces that could be considered slightly casual but added heels and a blazer makes my outfit work appropriate without being traditional.

I swear you and I have been outfit twinzies lately! I’m wearing a similar shirt-but it’s just red without the polka dots. Hmm I never thought to put the same color over the same color like that. I like it!
I actually got the idea to put the red cardigan over this top from The Limited’s website. They had a red blazer over this same top and I thought it looked really nice.
Ooo…I love those shirts from The Limited! (Especially the blue medallion) I have one of the solid ones from this fall (looks to be same/similar styling) and it’s so comfortable AND flattering.
And they’re 40% off today! I’m trying to be good and not buy things right now but the blue medallion one is SO cute!
Ooo, I love the Limited shirts too! I tend to shy away from button-downs, because I didn’t realize they could be so fun. I should try some more out. I don’t need new clothes either though.
Since you don’t have to go into the office very much right now it doesn’t really make sense for you to buy office clothes. Which is sad for me because I enjoy enabling people to buy cute things
Nice work being creative with your closet to fit the inspiration! I think that’s really part of the point of being inspired anyway. The outfit gave you direction, but you made it your own with what you had and come up with something similar but not identical, which really seems more like copying than inspiration to me (not that copying someone’s outfit is a bad thing necessarily…just maybe different than being inspired by it).
You’re totally right re: inspiration vs copying. I enjoy doing both for sure but there definitely is a difference.
I like the red on red.
I don’t own a lot of patterned pieces (it’s a work in process) but I am actually wearing one today. I am also sporting a cardigan and black pants.
Pairing a printed shirt with a cardigan and black pants is a great way to ease yourself into wearing patterns!
Love the red!!! Such a good color on you!
I noticed you are wearing nude shoes, too. Can you do a post sometime about guidelines for how to wear them, please? My first-ever pair of nude pumps are enroute to me in the mail right now. =)
I can certainly try to do a post on that! I’ll have to think about it some more.
Red tends to look great on those of us with dark hair don’t you think?
You look so long and lean in this outfit. Especially love the studded detail of the flats
Thanks!
I love the red on red so much! And I wish I hadn’t seen the Kohl’s version of that top… I was just shopping for running jackets on their site, and it’d be terrible if that polka dot shirt found its way into my cart
Hahahaha, I am such an enabler
This pair of nude flats is my very favorite of your shoes, the studs give them such a polished rocker look. (Well, I’m not sure polished rocker is a thing, but if there was, these shoes would be it.) I have to echo Kelsey as well, I never thought to pair a similar colored shirt/cardigan over another shirt like that, it’s quite striking! I need to go to my closet and see if I have any shirt/cardigan pairing I could try that with.
I wanted a pair of nude pointed flats for so long and I’m glad I held out for this pair. The gold studs do give them a bit of spunk that a plain pair wouldn’t have.
and i agree with you every monday!! this is a great work look. i love the bright red top, and those shoes add a touch of fun to the outfit!
Thanks!
I went to try on those tops at The Limited and they are incredibly see-thru! What would you wear under it? I didn’t buy one because of the see-thru-ness and they only had a size medium in stock.
A camisole in white or tan, for sure. Or a matching color. For example, with the blue one I would wear a blue camisole underneath it.
