My Version of the Academy Awards

About Me

Recently Jen and Brittany nominated me for the Sunshine Award and the Versatile Blogger Award!  I thought this Sunday was a good a time as any to accept my awards and give you what they ask for:  random facts about me!

First up, the Versatile Blogger Award!

  • Thank the Blogger who nominated you
  • Share seven (7) random facts about yourself
  • Nominate (15) fellow bloggers that you recently discovered or follow regularly
  • Inform each nominated blogger of their nomination by posting a comment on each of their blogs
  • Add the Versatile Blogger Award to your post

So, seven random random fact about myself…

1. I can read a book and then a month later not remember any details about it.  Which is why I have to read books for book club the week before or I won’t remember anything.  Good thing I read pretty fast.

The most recent book I attempted to read.  Got bored.  Never finished it.

2.  My first job out of undergrad was entering traffic ticket information into a computer database.  Sounds boring, right?  I actually loved it.

3. I’ve run three marathons.

4. Some day I want to be able to do a pull up or a chin up.

5. I’m horribly allergic to cats.   Good thing I’m a dog person.

This is Trinka Deu.  She passed away in May of 2010.  We don’t currently have a dog.

6. I’ve been married for almost 10 years.

7.  The two foods I prefer not to eat are olives and artichokes.  Otherwise I’ll eat almost anything.

And now, the Sunshine Award!

The rules for the award are:

    1. Include the award logo in a post and/or on your blog sidebar.
    2. Link to the blogger who nominated you.
    3. Answer 10 questions about yourself.
    4. Nominate 10 other fabulous bloggers and ask them 10 questions.
    5. Link to your nominees in your post and let them know about the reward.

And here are the 10 questions from Jen with my answers:

1. Do you put up Christmas decorations early, or wait until after Thanksgiving?

I definitely wait until after Thanksgiving if I put them up at all!  We won’t be in our apartment for Christmas this year so I might not decorate. But in the past at our house I had fun going all out…in the living room.

2. Favorite Bond woman?

Seeing as how I’ve never watched an entire Bond movie from beginning to end, I can’t name a single one.  Sorry!

3. Favorite artist?

As in, music, painting, sculpture, what?  Or do I get to pick?  Regardless, I’m much more drawn to the type of art rather than the person who created it.  This summer we bought what I would consider to be our first grown-up art when it caught my eye at a street festival.  And no, I don’t remember who the artist is.  Although I stuck the card in the back of the frames when we framed these.

4. Be honest, do you still have any VHS or cassettes around your house?

Part of me wants to say yes, but another part of me wants to say that we tossed them all when we moved in May.

5. Favorite holiday?

Any holiday that I get off work?  Does that count?

6. What’s the last book you read?

As mentioned earlier, the last book I attempted to read was American Gods by Neil Gaiman.  The last book I finished was Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.  Yes, seriously.  It wasn’t that good.

7. Braids or buns?

Buns, but only because I can’t braid my own hair.  I can barely put it up in a bun!

8. What’s your favorite time of day?

Late afternoon/early evening.  My favorite time to work out and then chill with dinner and a glass of wine is when the sun is setting.

9. Do you find it hard not to smile when being photographed?

If I’m looking at the camera, yes.  If I’m looking down or away, then no.

10. If you could travel anywhere right now, which locale would you choose?

A friend and I are trying to plan a trip for next summer to the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado.  If I could fast-forward time I’d go there!

And that brings us to the end of these awards.  But, I suppose I need to nominate the next round!  So, in the interest of consolidation, the people I nominate can either give us 7 random facts or answer 7 random questions!

Those people are:

Katie @ Alaskan Weredork

Kimmie @ Blue Paper Lanterns

Emily @ Out and About

Kelsey @ Ready, Set, Feast

Sierra @ Posh Meets Pavement

Mica @ MicaPie

And if you want to answer the 7 random questions, how about these:

1. Best vacation so far? | 2. Mac or PC? | 3. Do you consider yourself to be a morning person? | 4. Pie or Cake? | 5. Describe one of your phobias. | 6. Least favorite food? | 7. What is something you think you SHOULD do but you just don’t bother?

Have fun!

Pink All The Things!

More bright pink in November!  I just can’t let it languish in my closet.  At least I didn’t wear it with my bright pink skirt, too, right?

Regardless, this idea I got off Pinterest but instead of a pink blazer and pink gingham the woman was wearing  a navy blazer with navy gingham.  And, serendipitously enough, the person I repinned it from (Whitney) had already written “with my pink gingham/blazer?”  Or, perhaps the person she pinned it from had written that.   Either way, it sparked this idea in my head and I knew I wanted to wear it ASAP.

Seriously, Pinterest is amazing.  There may be nothing new under the sun but sometimes that’s a good thing.

Buttoned Up

It’s funny how you think about cardigans.  They’re meant to be worn over something, right?  But what happens when you have a crewneck style cardigan and you button it all the way up?  It becomes more like a regular crewneck sweater!  That’s what I did with this outfit after I saw an photo on Pinterest with a woman wearing a green sweater with a leopard cardigan.  Darn, I thought.  I wish I had a green sweater.

But, wait!  I actually do!  And even if this had been more of a v-neck cardigan you could still get the same idea with the colors and patterns.

So, this is my PSA to tell you think about wearing your cardigans buttoned all the way up.  What have you got to lose?

Funny story about this photo shoot.  Molly was taking the pictures and a woman walking down the sidewalk stopped and said, “That’s my house!  Do you want me to take a picture of both of you on the steps?” (Aside: this is the Keith House)  No, thank you, we said.  Just trying to get a picture of me by my lonesome.  “Oh, so it’s not a friends thing?”  Uh, well, we’re friends but, no, we’re not taking a friends picture.  Awkward!

My Little Online Shopping Secret

Shopping · You Pick Wednesday

Today I’m going to let you in on a secret.

Ever wonder how I’m able to find items for those collage posts I do?  Or, have you ever asked me for help locating a specific type of item online and wondered how I found my results?

Well, here’s my secret weapon.

What is Shopstyle?  Basically it’s a online retailer aggregator that lets you search for clothing, shoes and accessories by brand, price, color, and size among other criteria.

For example, I’m currently still on the hunt for a navy blazer.  So, I typed “navy blazer” into Shopstyle.  Here’s a taste of what I got:

As you can see, on the left I could refine my search by choosing a price range, a brand, or several other options. You can then click on each picture to be taken directly to the retailer’s website to view more images or purchase the item.

Shopstyle also has several other functions including the ability to create collages of items found on Shopstyle.  You can also browse the collages that others have created if you need fashion inspiration.

Mostly, though, I prefer to use Polyvore to create my collages and Shopstyle to search for items online.  Shopstyle may not include every single online retailer out there, but most of the ones I frequent are there.

So the next time you’re on the hunt for something specific, give Shopstyle a try.  Or, if you’d rather delegate the work to someone else, you can always just email me at looplooks at and I’ll take it on.  I do love a challenge!

November Pink

Just because it’s cold and dreary outside doesn’t mean you have to put your bright colors in the back of your closet.  Pairing a bright skirt with black and gray tones down the look and keeps it from shouting “SPRING”!

Also, here’s a hint:  wearing a cotton pencil skirt with tights is not the best idea.  I had to purchase my very first slip to wear with this skirt and these tights to keep the skirt from riding up like crazy.

When you play around in your closet you’re bound to discover that the right undergarments are key to making certain pieces work together.  And in this case if a $9 slip from Target can help me keep wearing this skirt into the winter then I’m all for it.

Inspiration Monday – Grey or Gray?

Today’s Inspiration Monday from Two Birds is finally someone I actually know!  Well, I mean, I don’t know her personally but at least I’ve seen at least one movie she was in.

Original Inspiration: Elizabeth Hurley

Ms. Hurley is wearing something that is very on-trend right now:  velvet.  Which just reminds me of the black velvet pants I had in high school.  I don’t currently have anything velvet in my closet so I just went with the color scheme here and stuck with black and grays.

Although, to be honest, I could have worn jeans today.  I’m not in the office (took a vacation day) but I still wanted to show you how to take a casual inspiration photo and make it work appropriate.

Also, don’t forget about my contest to win a $50 Visa gift card!  Two comments before November 22nd as well as helping me hit either 100 Facebook likes or 200 pageviews a day for at least 5 days.  For your reference, here are the stats so far:

Facebook Likes: 65

Days with pageviews over 200: 2

Thanks for your help, everyone!

And thanks again to Molly for taking my outfit photos this week!  We took them all on an abnormally warm (and windy) Sunday so if I seem underdressed for current Chicago conditions that’s why.

Sunday Remix–Red Pants 9 Ways

Office Appropriate Outfits - Fall

 (similar pants)

Since on the last Sunday Remix I did my green pants, I thought it only appropriate that this time I do my red pants!

You know, taking pictures of your outfits and then putting ones with similar or the same items side by side really makes you realize just how you wear certain items.  For example, these pants.  Apparently I almost always pair them with black and white.

That’s it.  My new goal is to figure out what else to wear with these pants that ISN’T black or white.

What would you wear with red pants?

P.S. Want to win $50?

Borrowing from the Boys

Ever notice how guys have it so easy on casual Friday at the office?  Jeans and a nice button up shirt and they’re good to go!  I decided to borrow from the boys and do the same.  Jeans and a button up shirt.  Add some fun accessories to glam it up a bit and I’m ready to take on my casual Friday nemesis in style.

This top has been in my closet for years and years.  Every now and then I think about getting rid of it but then I decide not to.  Wearing it tucked into jeans is new for me but I think I like it!

Thanks again to Molly for playing photographer for me this week!  Not only did I get to hang out with her but she also showed me a new part of Chicago that I’d never been to.  If you live in Chicago and haven’t wandered down Prairie Avenue or visited the oldest house in Chicago I suggest you do.
