Just because it’s cold and dreary outside doesn’t mean you have to put your bright colors in the back of your closet. Pairing a bright skirt with black and gray tones down the look and keeps it from shouting “SPRING”!
Also, here’s a hint: wearing a cotton pencil skirt with tights is not the best idea. I had to purchase my very first slip to wear with this skirt and these tights to keep the skirt from riding up like crazy.
When you play around in your closet you’re bound to discover that the right undergarments are key to making certain pieces work together. And in this case if a $9 slip from Target can help me keep wearing this skirt into the winter then I’m all for it.

A reader recently contacted me and asked for help with a pair of ankle boots she just bought.
Right now I’m pretty happy with my closet. But even so there are days when I stand there and stare at all the hangers and think, “I wish I had….”
I’ve had all of these clothing pieces in my closet for a long time. I keep wavering on whether or not to keep the cardigan and then it keeps staying.
Pairing the fancy sequined skirt with a neutral colored cardigan and nude heels helps keep it from being too bling-y or overwhelming.
The fact that I paired two pieces that could be considered slightly casual but added heels and a blazer makes my outfit work appropriate without being traditional.

Today while I was walking to the bus stop I made Siri add ‘buy slip’ to my notes on my phone. That was before I read your post!
Guess you discovered the same thing I did!
I haven’t worn a slip since I was about 12! But it would be a good thing to add to my collection this year! (I really think I wear the same 5 pairs of pants every week)
To be honest, I don’t think I have, either! This may be the first one I’ve ever bought. I think the others were hand-me-downs from my mom.
I love hot pink and gray together, especially in the fall and winter. This is a fabulous look!
Thank you!
Ahh! Good reminder that I need a slip! I made that pencil skirt mistake + tights a few times in the past week.
Seems such a silly thing to have to do, but it really has been helping!
I really need to add some brightly colored skirts to my wardrobe. This is so simple and chic.
It’s fun, isn’t it, to see how a colorful skirt can change up an outfit?
I always hate having to go buy slips, but you nailed it, they’re pretty essential for skirts not riding up over the tights. (And they help get rid of the “skirt-leg cling” that happens in the winter.) The bright pink is gorgeous with the gray, it’s a really fun and grown-up way to wear bright pink. Your legs look so long with the dark tights and the booties!
If I knew how to sew I would just put linings in all my skirts to help with this problem without having to resort to a slip. Alas, I don’t so a slip it is!
