Jacket – Target (similar) | Shirt – Gap (similar)| Skirt – J. Crew Factory | Necklace – J.Crew via Poshmark | Shoes – Karen Scott via Macy’s | Belt – Target

I’ve been wanting a polka dot skirt for months.  MONTHS, I tell you.  When I saw this one in a set on Polyvore I clicked on it thinking, “Oh, it’s probably sold out.”

When I realized it was actually available via the new J. Crew Factory website and was on sale for only $40 I practically ran to my wallet.

I ordered it in two sizes and was a little bummed when it arrived because the smaller size was a hair too small and the larger size was a hair too big.

So, I took a cue from Stylish Petite and washed and dried larger size of the 98% cotton skirt to see if it would shrink.  And you know what?  It did!  Now it fits perfectly.

There are a lot of polka dots going on in this outfit and along with the red jacket it feels very Fourth of July.  Still, I don’t care that the leaves are falling and it’s October, not July.  We have a warmer than usual day today so I’m wearing my new skirt with pride.

I need you to teach me your ways in mixing the patterns and colors. I suck so hard at it… hence the reason most of my closet is solid colors. SCARED

Perhaps I’ll do a post on that for an upcoming You Pick Wednesday!

Looks great! Love the mixed patterns and those leopard print pumps… so unexpected, but it works so well.

And yes, please do a pattern mixing post!

I was just thinking about buying some stuff from J. Crew Factory but haven’t ever really buy J. Crew stuff before. Do the sizes run sort of normally or do you find you have to size up or down a lot?

    • Erin @ Loop Looks October 23, 2012 at 12:33 pm #

This was the first time I’d ever bought anything from there and I don’t tend to shop at J. Crew very often, either. So far, though, this skirt seems to be sized normally. Maybe running a tiny bit large.

Cool, thanks! Maybe I’ll try on a couple of items at a J. Crew store and see how they fit first.

Yay, polka dots with pride! The animal print accessories help tip the overall outfit toward fall. It’s funny that I also wore red-white-and-blue today! :)

Is your weather more spring like than fall like right now? Maybe that’s what made us trend towards summer colors :-)

Love the skirt! And beautiful jacket! Well the whole outfit is fab! Definitely got a patriotic feel!

Thanks! It’s usually too warm in Chicago July to wear an outfit like this so I have to get my red, white, and blue in when I can.

Thanks! The two different polka dots just go so well together, don’t they?

And again I love. The mix of the two polka dotted patterns and the extra pop of the leopard print heels is so fun and wild, but still works so well! (Does that even make sense? Meh, I’m not too sharp tonight.) I am just crazy about the bright red coat, it adds just the perfect amount of color and look so stylish.
And wow, what a great deal on the skirt! Hah, I do that to my pants, it works most of the time. (At least, as long as I don’t throw the husband’s shirts in at the same time. I end up with pants that fit, he ends up with belly shirts.)

Something about leopard just makes it seem like a neutral to me. Not sure why! This was the first time I’d ever purposely tried to shrink something before wearing it. I’m so happy it worked out. And, yes, there’s a reason why I do my own laundry and my husband does his own laundry. Too many chances for oopsies otherwise.

Stupidly, I didn’t have Loop Looks in my Google Reader, but I do now! Anyway, I feel encouraged to know that you can mix two kinds of polka dots! Do you ever do personal shopping-type consultations? I get easily paralyzed by choices in stores and would love to have some help. :-)

I would be more than happy to help you out with shopping! Need to start looking for non-grad student pieces?

Polka dots are so fun! Do you think you will pair the skirt with fun tights this winter?

    • Erin @ Loop Looks October 26, 2012 at 11:29 am #

I will definitely be pairing it with tights but I don’t have any fun ones right now. Maybe a pair of polka dot tights need to make an appearance in my life?
