Gap & Refinery 29 Do Chicago

gap_refinery21_party 002

Last night the Gap and Refinery 29 hosted an event at the Lincoln Park Gap location.  The premise? Modern and vintage looks with a side of cocktails and shopping.

I walked into a busy store filled with music being played by a DJ, passed hors d’ oeuvres and my choice of cucumber vodka, cosmos or white wine (all you could drink!).

The stylists from the Gap and Refinery 29 had put together three outfits complete with an assortment of vintage accessories.  After entering for my chance to win one of the assembled outfits seen above I started browsing the store.  Considering the polka dot and striped outfit was my favorite I knew I wanted to find that top.

But there were so many other cute things!

Seriously, I could have spent so much money.  As it was, we got 30% off one full-priced item.  So, I grabbed a few things and headed into the dressing room.

Ponte academy blazer in dark heather gray (loved this!!), perfect dot shirt in blue dot, and original fit jeans in worn salvage wash (needed a smaller size)

Canvas military jacket in gartland green (too big but a fun idea)

After oogling so many other items (this jacket, these pants, these shoes to name a few), I decided to stick with one item.  And which item was that?  The polka dot shirt I loved from the second I walked in the door.

The gals from Refinery 29 were super nice and it was lovely to meet them.  I didn’t do much mingling otherwise, though, because it seemed as though everyone else who was attending came with another person.  Still, it was a lovely event.  I’m glad I went even if now I want to spend all of my upcoming paychecks at Gap.

P.S.  Don’t forget that you want to win $15 in free clothes or accessories

Because I Shop Too Much–GIVEAWAY!

If you’re like me you have a few things in your closet that you just aren’t sure about.  You bought them for one reason or another but now they rarely see the light of day.  Maybe it’s a top you used to wear all the time but no longer love.  Maybe it’s a pair of pants that never fit quite right.  Maybe it’s shoes that just don’t fit with your lifestyle anymore.  What’s a girl to do?

In the past you only had a few options for dealing with these items.

1. Let them be.  Box them up or leave them languishing in the back of your closet in the hope that someday you might wear them again.

2.  Donate them to Goodwill or another thrift shop.  Sure, you can get the tax write-off but what if you don’t have enough itemized deductions to make it worth your while?

3.  Find a consignment shop or take them somewhere like Plato’s Closet or Clothes Mentor.  You might get some money for your items but you’re not in control of the pricing nor of what they are willing to take.

4.  List and sell items on ebay.  But there they may get lost among the shuffle of thousands of other items for sale.  Besides, isn’t ebay SO 10 years ago?

Now, though, you can take control of what you sell and for how much and you can do it from the comfort of your own home!

The Chicago-based start-up Because I Shop Too Much launched their beta site in 2011.  The premise?  You create a profile, upload photos of the clothing items you want to sell, enter the item details, and set the price.

“It’s not just about selling & buying clothes” assures Lisa Fergus, Founder. “We’re meeting lots of females out there – especially today – that are on budgets for a variety of reasons – family, school, the economy. They are bold, creative, & want to look great without paying premium retail prices.”

“And the fact that friendships & social circles are being formed along the way,” as Kaitlyn Fergus, Founder points out, “well, that just may be the best part.”

You create circles of friends whose closets you love.  You can see what they have for sale and, in a unique twist, easily swap items with other users if you both see something you like from one another!

I currently have several items in my own closet on Because I Shop Too Much.  Here’s a taste:

Top – The Limited | Pants – The Limited | Shoes – Unisa via | Earrings – via StitchFix

It was a close race, but in the end most of you told me you wanted to see the brown and gold look!

Gold sequins and spaghetti straps are probably a little tough to pull off for work but a gold shimmery shell?  Not as difficult.  No sleeveless allowed in your office?  Throw a cardigan or a blazer over the top and you’re good to go.

Next week I have a reader request post lined up.  How do you wear shorts when you’re really tall?  I have some answers!

Also, tomorrow while I’m out of the office taking a professional exam I’ve got a fun giveaway scheduled!  Have you heard of Because I Shop Too Much?  No?  Well tomorrow you will!

Cardigan – Lucky Brand | Top – Banana Republic Outlet | Pants – Gap | Shoes – Nine West Outlet | Earrings – Francesca’s (gift)

This is not the outfit I originally wanted to wear today.  Nope.  I had something a little different in mind when I went to bed last night.  But when I put that outfit on this morning I just wasn’t feeling it.  So, this is what I ended up with.

And while I’ve worn these red pants with leopard print accessories I was surprised to realize I haven’t worn it with this particular leopard cardigan.  Funny how that happens, isn’t it?

P.S. Today is the last day to vote on Wednesday’s outfit!  Right now Brown & Gold is winning.  Is that what you want to see?

That Polka Dot Dress

Dress – Ann Taylor | Top – Old Navy | Necklace – The Limited | Shoes – Nine West

Looking at these photos I get the feeling I would be more at home somewhere like Martha’s Vineyard instead of in a high rise office building in downtown Chicago.  But since it’s cool, gray and rainy in Chicago today I’ll just imagine I’m somewhere on vacation instead.

This is the second time I’ve worn this dress on the blog.  The first time I actually mentioned this particular outfit but this is the first chance I’ve had to wear it.  Also, another outfit where I’ve turned a dress into a skirt?  I’m liking this versatility!  It’s a great way to take a summer dress and transition it into fall.

Casual Khaki

Top, Pants & Scarf – The Limited | Earrings – Kristin Hassan | Shoes – SE Boutique via DSW

First, I apologize for the disappearing act on Thursday.  My husband and I played hooky from our respective responsibilities and went to play at the Museum of Science and Industry.  It felt good to take a day and just be a big kid.

Today, though, I’m back at work.  However, it’s Friday and that means casual!  I’ve had these pants for years and rarely wear them.  For some reason khaki isn’t one of my go-to colors.  However, I recently saw the khaki and lavender color combination online and decided to give it a shot.

How do you feel about khaki?

You Pick Wednesday–Denim & Lace

Dress – Marshall’s | Blouse – Target | Watch – Fossil | Bracelet – Kristin Hassan | Shoes – Lucky Brand via Marshall’s

It’s You Pick Wednesday again and this week you chose the denim and lace look!

I admit, this outfit may be a tad bit too casual for the office but I’m able to pull it off because A. it’s summer B. I don’t have any meetings and C. my bosses are out of the office.

Still, for those of you who can’t wear sleeveless to the office, throwing a blouse over the top and tying it at the waist is a nice alternative to a cardigan.

And my bracelet?  I’ve been craving a wrap bracelet since they came on the scene earlier this year.  Kristin Hassan was having a sale at the end of July so I snatched up two of these babies.  Although, to be honest, they’re not that expensive at regular price for the quality!

Finally, while I work on a reader request post, I had so much fun seeing what you guys voted on, that we’re doing it again for next Wednesday!

Don’t forget, I’m also always looking for reader requests or suggestions so hit me up either in a comment, by emailing or on Facebook or Twitter!

Blouse – Gap | Skirt – NY & Co | Necklace – Macy’s | Shoes – Nine West

I spent a chunk of yesterday and today reorganizing my Pinterest boards.  Now I’ve created one for all the outfit pins I’ve actually interpreted on this here blog.

I’ve also created one for items I’m lusting after.  So, you know, if anyone is looking for gift ideas…

Do you keep a list of items you love or want?
