A Loop Girl and Her Shoes

About Me

Working in downtown Chicago sounds glamorous.  And in many ways it is.  But one of the staples of working in “the Loop” is an entire shoe wardrobe under your desk.  Or in a desk drawer.  Or in a bag in the corner of your office.

Many people who work downtown have a commute of some kind.  Whether it’s by train or bike or walking or some combination of the kind.  Even if you drive there’s a chance you’ll still have to walk somewhere.  And while some people can walk from place to place in heels others of us prefer to change into our heels once we get where we’re going.

Then there’s the weather.  Rain, snow, puddles, wind.  One day it’s 80 degrees and then next it’s 40.  You just never know what the day is going to bring.

So, unless you want to haul your shoes back and forth (and some people do!) the office shoe selection is a must.

As you can see, I have what I consider to be the staples:

  • Sneakers
  • Emergency snow boots
  • Brown heels
  • Gray heels
  • Brown/tan peep toes
  • Leopard print heels
  • Black strappy heeled sandals
  • Black peep toes

Basically I can show up to work wearing whatever shoes I want and I can swap the originals out for anything here.

Of course, these aren’t all my shoes.  Not by a long shot.  And some of these pairs will rotate throughout the seasons.

The only downside is remembering to take a specific pair home if you’re going to need them outside of the office.  Still, it beats getting stuck wearing your rain boots with your suit all day!

What shoes do you consider to be staples for your job?

I’m in love with the Karen Scott shoes!

Right now all I wear to work are my Danskos. I love them. I usually throw on some sneakers and wear them up until I get to work as well. I don’t want to get my work shoes nasty with the walk to my car ( my car is parked about 2.5 blocks from our apt) especially when the weather doesn’t cooperate. I have my eye on some Sperry’s or a pair of those Nine West shoes you linked to me a few days ago. Again though, I’ll still wear my sneakers up until I get to work, then change.

My rain boots and my snow boots are lifesavers when the weather is gross. Since you work in health care, though, I can totally see why you want to keep your work shoes out of the elements!

I commute with my shoes each day. I don’t really plan ahead when it comes to outfits, so I like the flexibility of always having all of my shoes on hand. That said, I also commute with my gym bag each day in case I want to run at home or workout at the office. I just throw my shoes in my gym bag and switch them out when I get to work! This post is sooo Chicago though. 🙂 Love it!

I just got so tired of hauling them back and forth that I started the collection under my desk. The hardest part is remembering to bring home a pair if I want to wear it on the weekend!

I love that leopard print heels are a necessity!

Awhile ago I looked and had 6-8 pairs at my desk. I took them all home and just bring them in per day now.
